Sarkisian closes in
Posted by Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer on Saturday at 8:57 pm
At some point in the near future, possibly this week, expect Steve Sarkisian to be named head coach of the Oakland Raiders.
Call it educated speculation, which is better than an outright guess, but something less than an a multi-sourced news story stripped across the top of a sports page.
Sarkisian did so well in his interview Monday one league source told me he thought offered him the job then and there, although he also told me I'd better check it out before going with it.
Another source has told me on two separate occasions this week Sarkisian was the leading candidate, after both the Jim Fassel and Rob Ryan interviews.
Neither of these sources have spoken directly to Davis, but their information is usually reliable.
Sarkisian, in recent days, has gone underground. There are people I've talked to in Southern California who rarely have a problem reaching him, but now can't get him to return a phone call.
Open and chatty following his interview Monday with Medianews reporter Steve Corkran, Sarkisian is now unavailable.
Call me overly cynical, but it sounds to me like Sarkisian is acting in a way befitting a coach of the Oakland Raiders. Someone told him to zip it regarding his candidacy. He may have even been told to save it all for his press conference.

If I was Crazy Al, I'd make Rob Ryan the head coach. At least he looks the part.

Sucks to be that guy. That's easily the hardest place to coach in the NFL. He should have declined

Classic...Crazy Al gets his next yes man, a 32 year old college assistant.

he's a college assistant! yah the raiders suck and they might even hurt his career if he was a super hot shot NFL coordinator or college headcoach. but the raiders have been picking high for a while now, the raiders are due relatively soon for a bounce back to 7-9ish. in which case he'll be the one that brought them back!
its still an NFL head coaching job.

Oh hey now wait a minute there, Mock..... Mr. Davis was the guy that gave RatBoy his first break as HC. He's also the guy that recognized the talent in in young Gruden.

Pickin' high with WHAT? The have nothing at RB unless Fargas can stay healthy, both Porter and Moss want the hell out of there, they are in a craphole that only fills halfway, and don't have a QB.
Their star DT is Warren Foot in Mouth disease.
They bring in some hot shot draft pick and a totally untested assistant college coach and think they are going to get to 7-9? All they have is a fairly good but old defense in pass defense.

He didn't recognize it enough to hold on to him, either one.
And it's 25 for the Raiders and 17 for the Broncos. But I guess when you are as low as Raider fans have been lately you exaggerate to boost your ego, eh?

?? I'll give you that the #3 defense may rate as "fairly good," but its also probably the youngest defense in the NFL. Sapp & Burgess are the only two old guys on the D-team.

I'm hoping against hope this isn't true, or that if it is, he will get fired by Al Davis and then win a Super Bowl with his new team.

I apologize for the 35 that should really be a 25.... honest mistake. I've actually attempted to correct it over the years, but couldn't figure out how to edit the sig line - open to pointers or a kind & caring mod to fix it for me.

I knew it would be pretty tough for you.
Just look at it as a BYU guy movin on up.
He was a pretty good QB...you guys had a great run with QBs in the 90s with Detmer, Walsh, Sarkisian, Feterik etc and ofcourse in the 80s too with that system.

It's a good hire. Raiders have to go young because no veteren coach wants the job. Plus Al doesn't want to spend alot. Plus Raiders have a young team so maybe a young coach is good. USC offense has been great. Is this hire for sure though?

And let them both get away (no superbowls) I dated a really hot chic once but never scored with her. Same thing.

These college assistance look so good when you have like 4 number 1's and 7 number 2's recruited every year. Like Nebraska running backs in the day. Behind those corn fed, inbreed and brain dead 'roided up lineman they had they all looked like world beaters. They go pro and poof nothin.Remember SD with Mike Riley the boy wonder coach??

And we have the same system again! Jason Munns is going to surprise a lot of people. I actually liked Sarkisian as a player more than Detmer during that run. Anyway, Shanahan was a Raider so I guess it's not all bad. I'll just fire bomb Steve's house.:wiggle:

Hope it isn't too done a deal, for Al's wallet's sake. They still have yet to comply with the Rooney rule. Firing a minority doesn't mean you've complied.

Like shanahan needed a break? he was going to a good team no matter what and suceed and let's not forget what scary alice did to those two coaches and let's not forget what those two coaches did to him. One world class blunder after another from the crypt keeper and his ego, and raider nation has payed ever since.
