Gov. Calls For Elimination In State of the State
January 10, 2007
Reported by Associated Press
Governor Dave Freudenthal encouraged the 59th Wyoming Legislature to permanently repeal the sales tax on food during his annual State of the State address.
The governor said the Legislature's move last year to suspend the tax on food won widespread support throughout the state.
But that was just a temporary measure, and the tax will come back unless some further action is taken.
Freudenthal says the public would support a permanent repeal.
The governor also pushed his proposal for property tax relief, although he acknowledged that that proposal doesn't have as broad a base of support.
And he said the Legislature should finally pass a law banning open containers of alcohol in motor vehicles.

Are they "trimming" their annual budget to coincide with this tax cut? If not, they'll raise taxes in another area. As long as spending is maintained, you got to get the money from somewhere...dman

I am a resident of Wyoming. Other than the long winter and wind, there is much to like about Wyoming (this is from someone who has roots in Colorado). I miss the conservative, lower paced lifestyle I remember in Colorado in my youth where you could travel about and not seem you were enjoying the outdoors with 100,000 of your closest friends. Wyoming has considerable beauty outside of Jackson that many people have yet to discover without the crowds.
Wyoming has seen many booms/busts over the years. Knowing that the state will probably never be able to diversify the economy, the state should take care in spending the current energy/soda ash windfall. I would like to see some of the money spent in areas that will continue to benefit such as community infrastructure improvements. I would include education but I am quite skeptical of the states ability to get bang for their buck simply because they are doing much to mismanage this area now. They are wrongly usurping the decision making that should be made in the communities themselves. The teachers could use more income to bring it inline with national averages.
Meth and substance abuse are significant problems but I am not sure that isn't happening everywhere. Finding workers that can pass a drug test is also an issue. How messed up is a system (Department of Family Services) that places the HIGHEST priority in placing children back in the homes of parents ASAP following convictions of substance abuse without adequate proof these people have truly turned their lives around.

I myself have deep colorado roots and there is alot of breath taking landscapes here , 155 new business have moved to natrona county in the last 5 years , this boom is different then the one in the 80's ............ As for Education , Dr Madden of Willard elementary is an outstanding administrator , but yeah severe teacher problem here ...........
I dont know anything about Family service or their policies so I cant speak on that ...........
what I miss the most was camping without a crowd of people , I remember Wellington when Wellington was just an exit ............
There is still alot of good in Wyoming ,so much to be enjoyed , but as I stated before drilling is ruining alot of landscape ......... but the oil companies give back ........

Our new governor Beebe ran on gradually repeally sales taxes on food. Man I hate to see Huckabee go b/c of term limits but it is what it is. I was wondering how it goes in other states food sales tax wise. Personally I support it b/c food stamp recipients get advantage and not hard working citizens paying taxes on something that is a need and not a want.

We have a 9.25% sales tax on top of an income tax. A 12.50% sin tax. I know Arkansas is one of the most taxed states in the nation. Really would like a no sales tax on food though b/c it is a basic need for mankind.

True we do have 6 electoral votes to your 3. Although we might have found oil in our shale deposit. I guess fingers cross or we could use all the grease we fry our chicken in for fuel as bio fuel.
