View Full Version : If you could have any back-up QB in the league, who would you take?

Seems like a relevant discussion... Keep it to viable back-ups... Not people who are going to be starting next season.

For back-up quarterbacks, I go:
1. Jeff Garcia
2. Jake Plummer
3. David Carr (/provided someone doesn't give him a starter role somewhere, which I kind of doubt)
4. Joey Harrington
5. Shaun King (with a shout out to -Slap-)
6. Tim Rattay

I hope I grow popsicles from my armpits in the summer... ;)
/Between the cap and Plummer's stated desire to find a starting job, I wouldn't get your hopes up. He'd be some great insurance for us, that's for sure.

For the Broncos? There's quite a few I'd like:
Jake Plummer
Brad Johnson
Koy Detmer (he can hold)
Kelly Holcomb
Damon Huard
Jon Kitna
Gus Ferotte
Mark Brunell - I think he'd be great.
Trent Dilfer
Charlie Batch

I'd pick the guy that doesn't fumble the snap on FG and extra points.

Schaub is going to be a starter next season for someone.
Jim More Jr is gone. Atlanta's next HC gets to decide the direction Atlanta goes at the QB position.
Matt Schaub WILL be a Falcon next season.

Would it be good for the team? Nope. Would it be good for me? Yup.
Brian Griese... it is always his fault :)

We should probably draft a guy whose already crippled and quarterbacks from an electric wheelchair. It would save the Broncos on paperwork and making any changes on the offensive line.

Tim Rattay, he would come cheap and he can play.
Garcia, Carr, and even Plummer will be looking for potential starting chances, not a injury backup only type of role.
Personally I'd offer to take Kyle Orton off the Bears hands for a reasonable price (5th rounder?). He's got a powerful arm with experience out of the shotgun, so if Cutler is out we can keep the new vertical dimension of our offense in place. He's also got almost a whole season of starting snaps on a playoff team under his belt. As a QB he'd shown he can keep from losing games, I'd think he'd be even more up to the challenge with a better offensive unit and an extra season (though never playing) under his belt.

Some good names mentioned though I think a lot of those guys will be playing for starting roles.
Huard would be a good option, Harrington played much better this year down the stretch, not sure about Orton unless we went to a strictly run the ball offense and let our WRs sit on the bench all year.
It'd have to be someone mobile at this point, depending on what we do with the o-line in the offseason. Getting a statue is a recipe for disaster.

Brad Johnson would be a good backup and "coach" for Cutler
Carr could use a year to regroup. Broncs might be able to get him then trade him in a year.
Chicago doesn't have room for Orton and he would be a decent caretaker.

It's very unlikely we'll be able to convince a vet with a proven track record to come in. Guys like Plummer, Garcia, and Carr may not get anyone to offer them a starters job, but there will be a number of teams with a more tenuous situation at the position who will give them a more realistic shot at eventually getting onto the field. King has been out of football, so he would be a more realistic possibility.

Matt Schaub. No doubt whatsoever.
Hm...wait. I think I have to add Jeff Garcia to the list. However, he may be starting somewhere else next year.

Schaub won't happen, but if it did the first interception Cutler throws and we would have the same civil war we had this year with Jake and jay.

Damn, forgot about Rattay too. He's pretty good. Looked great for the Bucs at the end. He may be starting there if Simms tanks.

Some interesting names here.
Here are some more ideas w/ comments:
1) Garcia either goes nowhere (most likely) or goes somewhere that he can have a shot at more PT.
2) Plummer is as good as gone -- he was saying good byes in the locker room after the game.
3) David Carr... hmmm. What about Carr for Plummer? Seems like a reasonable trade to me. Sure Carr is younger, but it seems they have given up on him.
4) Harrington also another decent trade opportunity. Harrington strikes me a as a guy that still believes he is a starter in this league and would probably not welcome such a deal.
5) Rattay is also an interesting idea. He seems to me to be a guy content to play this role and he's done well at it. Tampa is a team rumored to have interest in Jake.
6) Brad Johnson - he'll probably be on his way out of Minny.
7) Jon Kitna - his days are likely numbered since there is a good chance Detroit takes Quinn or Brohm.
8) Bledsoe? - a long shot be he might be willing to play a couple more years in a veteran friendly town.
9) Kerry Collins - a guy that could hold the fort if needed.
10) Koy Detmer - Philly has an embarrassment of riches with Feely and Garcia.
11) Eli Manning - if the Giants are ready to give up on him (joking!)
12) Matt Mauck - no idea what his situation is with Ten
13) Luke or Josh McCown
14) Patrick Ramsey - I think he is a FA or RFA this year
15) Kyle Orton - Chi-town may have some interest in Jake if Griese and/or Grossman screw up the playoffs
16) Marques Tuisassopo - the Raiders are bound to draft a QB and thus let someone go. Tuis seems like he has had his shot in Oakland. He'd be a great fit in our mobile-Qb system.
17) Anthony Wright - a good journeymen that is always available.
I've never been a big King fan.

There are some good backups out there. One of the more underrated I think is Josh McCown, the McCown on the Lions. He had some good games with the Cardinals, including the huge comeback win last year in the final week. I was surprised he went to Detroit and even more surprised they handed the job to Kitna instead. Kitna threw for a lot of yards, but he's too old to invest for the future.
I really think with some playing time he could start for some teams. So many teams give up on young QBs after 1-2 years.
