21. Denver Broncos: Antoine Cason, CB, Arizona

The draft is still over three months away and I'm already sick of seeing mocks with the Broncos taking a CB in round 1.

Fox is up to the job (in fact when he did get to start at Arizona he was outstanding) and Paymah continues to improve. He caught my attention in the Cincy game where he got alot of playing time and I think acquitted himself well, most notably on a deflection of a deep ball to Chris Henry when he had no help. It's been a process for him over time. As Med has written about, the guy was a man-press corner at WSU and he's had to transition into a zone heavy system. As between the two of them, we are in decent shape. Curome Cox and Brandon are there too to help out in the passing game. Ofcourse, im not opposed to bringing in a veteran for depth purposes, albeit if its only at a very reasonable price. In addition, we can always draft a corner on Day Two somewhere, but honestly, the media is being really ignorant with this whole "there is a crisis at corner in Denver since D-Will died, so they have to satisfy this need". It's stupid. It's beyond stupid. We are fine at corner.

Exactly. I could see them looking for another corner for depth purposes, but they won't be looking to land a starter. Foxworth and Paymah will battle it out in camp for that spot.

Besides, the Broncos history of drafting corners in round one has traumatized me to the point that I'd have to be literally talked off of a ledge if they took another one.

No surprise. We'll see this until draft day, and the Denver will be subsequently downgraded afterwards because they didn't address this need. Thank God for all the wannabe scouts who wish they were in the NFL and know better than the actual teams what is/is not needed by each.

I would not mind either Cason or Revis in the first if they test out well at the combine. The Broncos should just take the best player availalbe.

I like Cason a lot but we don't need a CB. We have way more pressing needs like an every down HB, playmaking S, and a pocket pushing DT who can keep OL off of our LB's.

A first day CB wouldn't surprise me a bit. First round would surprise me. Kind of scared Leon Hall might slide there and tempt us. Ginn and Jarrett did nothing but elevate their stock against him.

I see that Arkansas DE Jamaal Anderson is coming out early. He's like 6'6, 270lbs and had like 13 sacks this past season. If he's still around at the Bronco pick, I think they'd have to take him. They have to find a way to get to the QB more often, especially if Shanahan insists on Coyer as DC and he insists on rarely blitzing and in soft zones all game long.

They have to find a way to get to the QB more often, especially if Shanahan insists on Coyer as DC and he insists on rarely blitzing and in soft zones all game long.


he has really long arms so maybe he will slip some after weak bench press numbers. he is very raw, he was a QB in HS i think.

6. Justin Durant LB Hampton 6'2, 225

7. Brett Ratliff QB Utah 6'4, 225

The tweener guy is the one who makes me live in fear. Shanahan has never given the safety position proper respect. We're always drafting these "athletes", with the idea we'll try them at corner and then move them to safety if they can't cut it on the island. There is such a thing as instincts for the position, Mike.

Hard to complain about those first two picks. I think Mebane is going to be a steal in the 2nd. He has some explosiveness with his first step and his hands are quick too. He reminds me a lot of Warren Sapp in some of the games i've seen. He fires out, stays low to the ground, is quick and hard as hell to root out when he sets his feet.

If we can't get Smith, I would love Anderson... hell, if we do get Smith, I would love Anderson. We need to remake the fact that our front 7 has become finesse as hell. Personally it makes me want to puke. Before we would play run defense going down hill. Now we are getting our $hit knocked back 3 yards off the ball. Anderson can help change that.

That's been his problem all along on any position, though. Shanahan seems to really have issues with drafting guys that have all these measurables whether they're good football players or not. I honestly think that's why he took Scheffler a bit earlier than most had him pegged, and while that's looking like a hit, it still suggests a pattern for him that has blown up in our face.

I will say that the Marshall and Dumervil picks show a change of philosophy since both weren't exactly what people wanted at the combine or standing against a tape measure but both were great football palyers and that won the day. I wish we looked at their ability, or insticts as you say, to play the game first and then used the measurables after the fact to narrow it down.

Sometimes it just seems that during the draft the only thing that makes Shanahan more excited than a prospect with a good fourty time, or workout performance is one that is injured. :hitself:
