SHELL OUT IN OAKLAND

Adam Schefter was right, after all.

A league source tells us that the Oakland Raiders are firing coach Art Shell. Today.

More to come

They must have someone in mind that has verbally agreed. Otherwise it'll take another 6-12 months to find someone to take that crappy job.

I once stayed at a Bed & Breakfast, maybe I've got enough experience.

Not so long ago I was in a Raiders forum during preseason and several of them had said they were so pumped that Shell was the new HC and we should look out. Of course I had to inform them of their own insanity.

Bye Shell - you knew it would never work anyway. The Raiders are pushing both the Lions and the Cardinals for the most pathetic team in the league award next year. Should be fun to watch...........NOT.

Just read this quite fitting description of Al Davis on another board. Too good not to share.

Has a team ever gone into a season without a head coach? Is that even possible? Or is there an NFL rule against it?

I actually think they won't have too many problems finding a good HC candidate.

The defense is on an upswing with plenty of young talent and already is a pretty decent unit. That's a pretty big deal.

The only significant problems are at OL/QB. With the top pick at each round and someone like Quinn available I think the faders job is more attractive than it was when Shell took over.

Besides, it's not exactly a pressure cooker situation. Any HC coming in won't be expected to do a whole lot until two/three seasons. Marginal improvement is all that's required and they really can't get much worse.

Not really. Al has little patience to let any sort of continuity form on that team. Every coach that has gone in there recently has been lucky to hack out two seasons and they have to work with the staff that Al Davis has selected. That's a raw deal, if you ask me.

Well defensively would you want to change the staff? They're doing fine.

Offensively, Shell picked the bed and breakfast guy and shoop so I'm not sure. I know Al gets final say over personnel and apart from Gallery his recent FA/Drafts have been good.

I think Al's impatience with coaches has more to do with how the team is perceived more than anything. Callaghan was gone because he called them the dumbest team in America, and under Shell their offense was a laughing stock and the butt of jokes with Walsh. As long as the team is improving, even marginally, the new coach will stay as long as the faders aren't considering a joke which I think hurts Al more than losing.

Having the number one pick, plus a solid defense makes them attractive. If I'm a head coaching prospect, I would view this is as a golden opportunity and a stepping stone to larger things. I would look the old man square in the eye and level with him. The only way out of his current situation is to totally step back and let a man of singular vision take over the day to day football operations. I think he would be receptive this time.

How do you think it feels for a guy with the pride and ego of an Al Davis to know his team is a laughing stock? I think he'll swallow hard and give his next coach at least as much autonomy as Gruden had and possibly quite a bit more.

I agree. There will be plenty of hungry HC candidates looking for their first gig.

The problem is going to be filling out offensive assistants. No secret that guys like Shoop/Walsh/OL coach/WRs coach etc are all history. Any new HC coming in, especially a first timer will find it tough to get quality assistants considering the good ones look for top dollar and job security. Still though, there are plenty of guys among the college ranks looking for a foot in to the NFL.

-Slap-
01-05-2007, 11:03 AM
I think they could go that route, or maybe Calvin Johnson. I think they should also explore trading down. They need so much on offense. Quinn will get murdered there for the first couple years at least with what surrounds him on offense.

I dunno. I hate the golden domers, and didn't watch them this season. I just don't know about Quinn. He makes me suspicious cause with Wise there may appear to be more there than there really is, and what I saw last year wasn't really reminding me of either of the Mannings who just looked franchise qb material. If you blow the no 1 overall on a guy who turns out to be mediocre or even a total bust (which Quinn shouldn't be) it's a big set back. I think I'd try to trade down. Hou got stuck last year.

I totally agree with you. I mean, on one hand, if the offense is rebuilding anyway, what better opportunity to let your young quarterback learn the ropes? The problem with that is you can't always tell if the guy sucks or if its the lack of talent around him. That way you might wind up wasting six years behind some guy who's not the answer, but who's too expensive to dump.

Vick's unique. I don't think you can run a real pro scheme with him. It might not be impossible to win a championship with him, if you had a defense like the ravens or bears, a decent running game and you just played a short field. Like Den did in the 70s, and then if you get over your own forty, just cut him lose.

Elway, the Mannings (all 3), Staubach, Plunkett, McMahon (the knees) those were guys I just had no doubts about. Of course, it's all relative. Put them on a terrible team, they won't win. But I thought they had nfl game w/o doubt. Aikman had the arm too.

Pitts had that wierd thing with Hanratty and Bradshaw. I never understood that. Go with Hanratty or draft the physical talent of Bradshaw? Why keep Hanratty. Probably because for 3 seasons Bradshaw looked like a bust.

Some put Lienhart in the non miss category, but I'm not sold on whether he can throw the deep out consistently.

ps, I thought last year Cutler had the best chance of being a franchise qb of the three. I wonder what Jeff Fisher really thought, or if he had no choice but to take Young.

Considering their D was actually pretty damn good, it's astounding how impotent the offense was. Moss and Porter are both obviously trying to play their way out of the black hole.

I honestly feel sorry for Shell...he came back to restore a semblance of honor back to a once proud franchise. Fortunately, or Unfortunately depending on your perspective, Shell was trying to run a system doomed to failure...no motion, no zone blocking, vertical offense. The game had passed him by, obviously.

If Vick is a coach killer, does that make Crazy Al a serial coach killer? Compare that with Pittsburg, which hasn't fired a coach since 1969. Two coaches all that time, and one for the thumb. I expect Cohwer to be coaching Carolina in a year or two. He had secretly bought a house in N.C. two years ago.

Ya know something...I honestly kinda wish that Oakland could at least be compeditive....HAAAAAAA!
