View Full Version : With the loss of DW, do Broncos sign FA or draft

A cornerback? As of now the Broncos have Paymah and I would assume Foxy returns to CB with Brandon and Fergy returns. I think Denver should hit the veteran FA route and possibly draft a CB.

Pretty bummed by the way the season ended and the loss of DW. Trying to look forward I suppose. Something positive like the draft or free agency...

Bummed, but they do have Shoate on PS. He was supposed to be a great technician, but a little slow. Spent 2005 on IR so he has been in the system for two years. Maybe an option, but I would expect some competition.

Time to see a lot more of my favorite non-starter: Curome Cox. That guy has a nose for the ball - always. He was too light to play safety, but he'll be an excellent nickel-back.
And was I hallucinating, or did Alex Smith juke and block John Lynch right outta that reverse play that sealed the loss?
We need to nake a run at Deon Grant, Jaguars FA SS .... big hitter, nose for the ball ... Like Kenoy, but better.

I said in another thread...
Hopefully someone is willing to come to Denver and help us out not for the money but for our recent tragedy.

You weren't hallucinating. That was a great play for them to run. Answering the thread's question, we do both. We need a veteran opposite Bailey while developing a young CB. Somebody mentioned Shoate. Shoate should NEVER see the field at gametime again...

Lynch may not have been able to make the tackle(Even if it was Alex Smith, it was a great play), he forced the guy inside. He done good.

I was hoping Foxworth would start at CB next year even before the terrible thing that happened to Darrent. Paymah has come around and done well in his time to play too, so they could draft or sign a free agent CB, but I would be surprised if it's one that pushes for a lot of PT nxet year.

this is going to sound real callous, and I don't want to anyone to take this the wrong way because I don't want it to be. But
How does Darrent passing affect the salary cap situation? I presume you treat Denver loss like a career ending injury? and his $ hit the cap?

Look, this is easy... Nate Clements is a free agent and would give us the best CB combination in football. Asanti Samuel does not fit our system. Nate Clements is far above his skill set. We draft a Safety in the 1st or 2nd rd and let them learn from the "HITMAN" There are a # of good hard hitting safeties in this years draft that could come in and play as a rookie. The rest of the draft is for a WR and OL/DL.

I would love to know the answer to that, as well. Herc?
I think Dwilliams cap # is irrelevant. He didn't have a huge contract so it should be nothing if it did hit all at once.

Nate Clements is going to want a lot of money and with the money already invested in Champ, hard to see them spending a lot of money on another CB.

NC is very overrated.....why drop all your money into 2 CB? when help on the OL and DL is needed more? This is the Denver Broncos we are talking about and not the Redskins.

i think if we let fox start and paymah play nickel i think wed be fine if we fix the pass rush and bring in someone like ken hamlin at safety

Your crazy if you think NC is overated. DWill i hate to say it was overated. I dont think Nate will go anywhere until day of the draft or right after, so there is still a good chance we can bring him in. Your right about the money though, but who knows maybe playing with Champ would entice him to come. We get a DE and a rookie Safety in the 1st or 2nd and i think the defense just got a whole lot better.

get direct tv and watch him dive into the ground when he is needed in run support......how many INT's has he had the last few years? I would rather have Smoot if you are going the FA way.

I think we're fine in the defensive backfield. Foxworth looked good IMO, and will get better. Paymah was OK. If somebody falls into our lap mid-draft, or if a 2nd-tier FA wants to come play for us, fine. Otherwise, put all our energy toward RB and DL.
If we put more pressure on the QB, our DBs will be fine. Better than fine.

Lynch wasn't at fault on that play. It was the other guy's overpursuit at the LOS that got us torched.

01-02-2007, 09:48 PM
Well, a replacement is necessary....it's highly debatable whether Foxworth, Cox or anyone else can step in without a dropoff in playing level on that side. Someone has to be brought in...and I'd rather see a vet at this point than throwing a rookie out there to be torched every other play.

AFAIK Darrent's original signing bonus will be accelerated and the poration that's left (50%) will count against this year's cap, his base salary doesn't. There will not be a lot of cap savings if any at all as his base salary was only $435,000 for the upcoming season.

The Broncos should go after Hamlin or Grant in free agency then draft a corner in the draft. A safety should be cheaper to sign in free agency then a corner.

I thought so to...it was whoever the other guy is suppose to be there to make the tackle when he forced him inside that missed the play!!

It would be interesting as to how all that would be handled. I can't imagine the feelings of callousness involved from the Player's POV, but the business goes on....
Why would they not have a special category for cases like this? It could be an extension of the IR or the PUP lists as it impacts the cap. It is really strange and sounds bad to say these things because it all happened less than 80 hours ago. So forgive me if it seems heartless. It is that I am just really bummed.

Everybody is still talking cornerbacks?
It's understandable with the tragic loss of Darrent, but still - we are fairly loaded at corner. Foxworth is the starter at LCB, with Cox/Paymah to nickelback/dimeback. SAFETY is where we're in trouble imo. Even if Sam Brandon And Nick Ferguson both come back strong, that's still just THREE veteran safeties (with the third being 16-year man John Lynch).
Maybe we bring in a few corners to look at - but we shouldn't spend draft picks on any - we still have 4 solid guys there.

It's time to mourn, not time to think about football personnel . . .
I'd like to see the first play of preseason with no cornerback flanking Champ. Kind of like the riderless horse at presidential funerals. Maybe just his helmet or jersey lying in his spot. Oblige the other team to throw incomplete to his side for the first play.

Moops, that is very moving, completely appropriate, even genius. I'm all on board. Start a thread with that, maybe we'll get some critical mass. Hopefully the first pre-season game is in Denver, and that play coincides with honoring his memory.

Why draft or sign a FA when we have Paymah and Foxworth? Also, good plan, moops, if the other team agrees, lets do that.

This is a very very nice idea. I also thnik this deserves an own thread...
I feel comfortable that we have the talent at CB... Fox is a guy that I think will step up now big time. I imagine besides Javon, he is probably taking this as hard as anybody.
Paymah showed a lot on Sunday as well.
Things happen for a reason but I feel like each of these guys are going to step their game up in D-Will's absence. In the return game we are going to take a hit though.

I just hope that Foxworth and/or Cox plays his own style instead of trying to emulate Champ's....afterall, that only works if you have ability on the same level as Champ's and who has that? Nobody.
