I saw Irons play in person at the Cotton Bowl. He was unspectacular and completely ineffective.

haha i really dont see replacing irons with tatum, they are the same player with tatum being a little faster and irons being a little quicker in the backfield. why draft russell AND irons? thatd give us three RBs at about the same level skill wise.

I like the first 2 picks, but 2 rbs would make me mad, esp with FS/SS's on the board in the 2nd/3rd.

I agree. Irons isn't even the best back on his team. He's skinny and doesn't have a lot of power. I don't think he'll be a great pro player.

he was very impressive last year and i dont think it necessarily had to do with marcus mcneill, he was great up the middle, right, left, outside, in the open field. he really did look like the next great auburn RB. i have no idea what happened to him now, mystery injury is about all i can figure. im interested to see where his draft stock plummets. i think he merits a 4th round flyer just on his production last year.

Mario Fannin is the real guy to watch in that backfield.

My hopefuls (in order of preference) for each pick on the first day:

1. Mike Bush, Okoye, Carriker, Laron Landry, Ginn Jr.
If Bush comes out and slides to us I think he provides a long term answer at RB, despite the injury, since it was something of a fluke and happened so long ago that he'll be healthy and in shape for camp. Outside of that Okoye is a great very young, smart talent to add to the DL. Raw but at 19 he offers serious upside. Carriker would be my second choice for the DL, providing us with a strong side DE capable of both rushing the passer and stopping the run. We need to break the cycle of one dimensional utility DLs. If we can't land any of those three I'd prefer to get a playmaking safety in Landry, but I think he'll go too early, assuming that and Ginn Jr. is available we should snag him as he'd provide an excellent speed threat to compliment Walker and Marshall in the long term, and give us a much more explosive return game in the short term.

2. Tim Crowder, Quinn Pitcock, Marcus McCauley, Zachary Bowman
Crowder is an excellent alternative if we can't get Carriker. Similar skillset to potentially develop into an every down strong side DE. I think Pitcock will get bumped down by Okoye and Tyler, if he should slide to our second pick he'd be an excellent addition as he's a proven run stopper. McCauley and Bowman very well might not be available (Bowman might not even come out), but if one of them is they'd be a quality DB addition, comprable to many of the highly rated and overpicked DBs of last year's draft.

3A/3B. Ryan Harris, Tom Zbikowski, Tony Hunt, Brian Leonard, Baraka Atkins
I really like Harris as an OL in our system. He's got great technique and has done everything an OL can be asked to do at ND. He can play every position and though for many teams his size would be a negative he's bigger than many of our OLs. Varsitile along the line and great at locking up in space. Zbikowski is the guy I'd like to see us get for safety. He's a playmaker with good (though not great) athletecism who also gives us another candidate for punt returns. In the early 3rd I think he could turn out to be a steal. Hunt could be a good fit for our running game, Atkins would be a steal if he slid to one of our 3rds, and Leonard, if he slides as well, is a great athlete that we should love to add (I doubt we will even give him a second glance though).

A few of my darkhorses are:
Derek Landri, I think he could be a quality backup across the line, run stopper but not much of a pass rusher, great pick for round 5.

Matt Trannon, love his size, in the 4th or 5th could pay off like Marshall looks like he will.

Ikaika Alama-Francis, not a second day dark horse, but I'd be real interested in him anywhere from our second to our last 3rd rounder.
