Weird who you bump into...I'm sitting in IHOP (I know) pounding black coffee in Grand Prairie Texas and cranking out work on the trusty laptop when I catch conversation from 3 booths away..."Denver Broncos"...Wesley Duke...Shanahan..."slam dunk competition"...etc...
So I finally walk over to this pleasant looking black lady and introduce myself, asking forgiveness for listening into her conversation as I did, and I find out I'm talking to Wesley Duke's aunt Hester. The lady told me that her nephew has been told by Bronco team officials they want to bring him back again in 2007 for another try. Then she talked up the kid for another 20 minutes...everything you ever wanted to know about Wesley Duke (did you know he has a paper route and works at Home Depot?), the fact that he's a hard worker...etc...typical aunt stuff.
Not that big a deal, but I thought it was cool I got an inside tip on the Broncos future plans from a family member sitting in an IHOP 800 miles away from Denver. She was pretty cool too...knew all about Cutler and even knew about Scheffler coming on strong, asked me how long I'd been a Denver fan...even said she tought Duke's competition would come from Nate Jackson...not every day you run into somebody down here who knows anything about the Broncos, let alone who Nate Jackson is.
Anybody have any similiar stories of stuff like this you came upon accidently?

She also said his knew's completely healed and the team monitored his progress rehabbing it. He did flash some potential till he got hurt.

Always been a Duke fan ;D
Wesley OTH needs to prove his worth first on the field before I jump all over him.
If he can come back strong from that injury, a 2 TE set would rock.
Im still in shock that someone you met in TX knew who Nasty Nate is ! WOW how cool.

She wanted to know my take on Plummer too...asked me if I thought we could go far with a rookie QB...this lady was pretty knowledgeable.

sweet.
That had to be cool, one of the many reasons I have to come on here is many of my friends are just "casual" fans and I cant get into any kind of discussion with them.

Where is Wesley living now? No way he's in GP.

Duke has a tough road to climb with those knees of his, but if he can recover I would love to have him back. Double Tight with Scheff and Duke would be unreal.
I would love the makeup of a Scheff/Daniel Graham/Wesley Duke/Lucky TE position. We would have a lot of talent at that position.

I love Duke. I hope he can come back strong.
Great story!

I figured they would bring him back once he healed. He showed alot of talent at the end of the year last year.

Wow, the Broncos must be pretty high on him to ask him to compete for a spot next year coming off that injury.
Didn't he start in the AFC Championship game last year? (Sorry for bringing that nightmare up)
I was at the game in Buffalo last year when he made his first (and I think only) NFL touchdown. Very nice catch that was Gates-like.

They said they'd look into bringing him back if he was healthy after they cut him.
From what I saw, he looked like a very tenacious in-line blocker in the short time he played...plus he's very athletic.

Yeah...the talent is there...only questions are injury and ability to catch up with guys who have played the game a long time. I could see him making it over Jackson, whose probably just as injury prone and less talented.

Yes he started the AFC Championship game and had a 20+ yard catch if I recall.

Pioneer Pkwy and 360?
That's a Denny's isn't it? I think your thinking of the Denny's on Randoll Mill and 360...it's pretty bad. This one's on Green Oaks and 360...never seen it dirty but lots of drunks in here about 2:00 am when Cowboys let's out and all of em seem to feel the need to come in here and act like complete retards.

I think that you are right...it's a Denny's, but it's on Pioneer and 360 on the GP side.
It's odd talking to someone from Arlington in here. I spend alot of time up there on the north side of town.

If Duke can come back from that injury and continue to improve, IMO we will have the best young TE tandem in the NFL. Duke and Scheffler would give us two very athletic pass catching TEs who can block as well. Our O (minus Oline) will be set for the next decade.

What was his injury?

Without reading any further than the first post...Duke would have made the team if he didn't blow out his knee...again.
They'll give him a shot if he can clear a physical.

lol i like duke and all but im not sure how everyone can jump right back on the bandwagon saying that we could have the best TE combination in the league, etc. last year some were proclaiming him the next antonio gates, no need to draft a TE, etc. i need to see more of the guy before i declare him the second coming of gates or anything. outta curiosity, what number would he wear?
oh and meeting the "famous" is always cool. last year i got to play volleyball against the #4 and #17 ranked basketball recruits in the nation, robin and brook lopez. not to brag or anything, but we won lol. nice guys, huge too. i havent had anyone be that much taller than me(theyre 7'0 i think) since i dont know when.
it would be great to get wesley back...he is a great athlete when he is healthy and is work ethic was very refreshing

What did he do, rip up his ACL? Ripping up cartilage actually scares me more these days. You can fix an ACL but cartilage is forever. It's creepy when they put a cadaver ligament in.

Duke was more hyped when he was here than Scheffler is right now. He has now had three surgeries on his knees. If he can come in and play special teams and develop, then that's great. I'm not holding my breath, though.

I watched Wesley play in nfl europe a couple of years back, looked good, maybe if he can get healthy he can come in and help us at that position.

I believe someone should post a recent pix of Wesley sans shirt so we can determine if he's still in playing shape...

His potential was tantalizing. I think he only made two catches last season and they were both pretty nice catches, including one touchdown. I was a little disappointed when he was cut, not because I thought it was a mistake, but it appeared he wouldn't turn out to be the next Antonio Gates despite the glimpses we got. If he comes back it would be nice to see him compete for a spot again, but I agree there's not much to get that excited about yet.

I really do believe Duke's injury changed the way Denver drafted and change the way they thought offense would run this year.

Here is somewhat of a similar story.
I was in a training class here at work and in comes an older guy and sits next to me. He is introduced as the VP of HR and his name is Bob Beake. After we talk, it turns out his brother is John Beake, the former GM of the Broncos for about 15-20 years.
This was after the Broncos played the Cardinals here in Phoenix. We talked about the game and he then tells me that he saw his nephew, Chip Beake, before the game. Chip is an offensive assistant for the Broncos.
We mostly talked about Cutler and Plummer. It was not anything to in-depth, but as much as the Broncos like Jake as a person, they are absolutly sold that they got the best QB to come out since Palmer and Manning!

Thanks for relaying the story footsteps... as for Duke? Sorry, but he needs to focus on anything but pro-sports. He has already shedded knee ligaments 3 times that required major surgery. I have a better chance starting for the Broncos. IMO, it's time for him to focus on that Home Depot mangement career.

I always cheer for guys who try to come back from injuries, but realistically his chances with the Broncos next year are very, very slim.

Zach Miller from ASU....Great hands, marginal blocker, and slower than Heap was coming out of college. Projected late 1st round, but I don't think he's fast enough for the pro's. We shall see.

I can pretty much confirm that Duke's rehab is going great.
what was his exact injury? was it just ligaments or also cartilage?
