Sixers, Nuggets reach agreement for IversonBy Marc Stein and Chris Sheridan
ESPN.com

The Denver Nuggets have reached an agreement in principle with the Philadelphia 76ers to acquire Allen Iverson, according to NBA front-office sources.

Pronger
The trade, pending league approval, some two weeks after Iverson demanded a trade in Philly, would send Andre Miller, Joe Smith and two 2007 first-round picks to the Sixers for Iverson and perhaps another minimum-salaried player or two. It was expected to be completed later Tuesday barring any snags.

The Sixers had been hoping to take back only expiring contracts in any Iverson deal, unless they were receiving a top-flight young player like Minnesota's Randy Foye or Shaun Livingston of the Los Angeles Clippers.

But with Philly and Denver struggling to find a third team to join in to make the deal more financially enticing for the Sixers, they decided to end an auction that began in earnest when Iverson's demand to be traded was confirmed by Sixers chairman Ed Snider on Dec. 8.

This deal will bring Philly a former league assist leader in Miller, Smith's expiring salary of nearly $7 million and those two first-round picks in June -- projected to be in the 20s -- to go with their own lottery pick. Miller is averaging 13 points and 9.1 assists per game -- third-best in the NBA -- while Smith, an 11-year veteran, has played little this season, averaging only 13.5 minutes and 5.1 points per game.

The Nuggets' interest in Iverson dates to last February and has only increased since the Sixers made him available to the whole league earlier this month. Their chief motivation is pairing Iverson with Anthony in coach George Karl's up-tempo attack, but acquiring Iverson now -- just a day after Anthony and J.R. Smith were suspended for 15 and 10 games, respectively, for their roles in Saturday night's fight with the New York Knicks -- gives a much-needed jolt to Denver's depleted roster.

The former teammates from the 2004 U.S. Olympic squad won't be able to play together until Anthony is reinstated for a Jan. 20 game at Houston.

Miller, who led the NBA in assists with 10.9 per game for Cleveland in 2001-02, makes $8.7 million this season and has $19.2 million left on his contract over the following two seasons.

It's apparent, though, that the Sixers decided it was better to absorb Miller's contract now -- along with the opportunity to have three first-round selections in what scouts are calling the deepest draft in years -- as opposed to dragging out the Iverson saga further.

Iverson has been in exile for the past 11 days, languishing on the Sixers' inactive list while still accruing his per-game earnings of $156,218.

Iverson, 31, is averaging 31.2 points per game -- second only to Carmelo Anthony's 31.6 ppg -- in 15 games this season. He has a career 28.1 ppg scoring average in 11 NBA seasons, all in Philadelphia. He led the Sixers to the 2001 NBA Finals, where they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in five games, but the team has seen little playoff success since.

He was Rookie of the year in 1997 and MVP in 2001. He has led the NBA in scoring four times, most recently in 2005, finishing in the league's top three every year since 1999, and twice led the league in steals.

Once "Haymaker" Melo gets back it's going to be quite a back court.

I guess the Sixers were backed into a corner. The market wasnt very good for an old superstar with a megacontract.

Hopefully, Iverson will share the ball with Anthony.

Make no mistake, Iverson now lays claim to this team. It's his. Anthony will be the second banana.

As a casual Nuggs fan I am excited to see how this turns out. We don't have to worry about sharing the ball between AI and Melo for a month. I really don't see that being much of a problem either. Either way, the Nuggets have sure found ways to get national attention this week.

What a great deal. Those 2 first rounders were late picks anyway. Iverson is a for sure, established superstar. Way better than Andre Miller. With Iverson, Anthony, Smith, Camby, and Nene we are SOLID.

I am beyond excited. This is insane. The Nuggets are gonna explode.

I am sorry but many of these players have come from rough childhood upbringing. They pretty much go right into the NBA and spotlight as teenagers and immature. Their natural instinct is to fight and regress back to how it was growing up. It doesn't make it right but who are we to judge when many of us have no clue what they went through. Okay, here's the interesting question. Who gets the shots?

Anyone familiar with the NBA knows that Iverson is an unapologetic volume shooter, who has a high usage rate (5th in the NBA) - meaning he has to have the ball in his hands most of the time, and he ends up shooting much of that time. For instance, Iverson shot the ball 24.4 times a game while in Philly this season. He made 10 of those for .413%, which isnt a good %. Now, the Sixers shot the ball 78.0 times a game. That means that Iverson took roughly 1/3 of the sum total shots of the entire team.

Carmelo Anthony shoots the ball 24 times a game as well. Denver shoots about 86 shots a game.

The Nuggets surely cant survive with those two guys taking a combined 48/86 shots a game, well over 50 % of the total. That would mean that Camby and JR Smith's shots would be reduced as well. I dont know if both of those players would be alright with taking 3-5 less shots a game.

Huge pick up for the Nuggets, the Northwest is now theirs to win. The Jazz dont have anyone that can defend Iverson, maybe in a couple of years with Sloan teaching D-will, but not now.

Great pick up for you Nugg's fans, it will be interesting to see how the #1 & #2 league scoring leaders develop chemistry.

BTW, no way does that 3 way trade go down with Utah and Boston Clockwork. You really think the Jazz would have given up Boozer for Wally, that trade held no weight with the Jazz front ofice.

Get a grip.

Hopefully this is the last time that you say that, because its nonsense.

Jason Terry dreamed of playing with a contender, and specifically with Dallas. Comparing the two is pointless because Terry has a completely different mindset about basketball. You are kidding yourself if you think Iverson is willing to give up shots to come off of the bench, like Terry happily volunteered to do in his first season with Dallas. Iverson doesnt even have the integrity to take practice seriously. What makes you think that he's going to make decisions that hurt his legacy (ppg average) for the betterment of the career of Carmelo Anthony?

Iverson has never been a team player. Not even on the US natl. team. He wont take a backseat to anyone. He thinks that he's Micheal Jordan, but he doesnt understand that MJ was a winner and Iverson is a career .500 player.

Practice, practice, practice. Bill Russell NEVER practiced and he won more NBA championships than any player in the history of the game. He HATED practice so he didn't do it. So lets let that rest, okay?

And keep thinking what you will about Iverson, we are soon to find out why type of mentality he has on the basketball court.

Llama, is you think this is such a bad match, why do you care so much? It seems to me that if you think this is a bad trade for a young WC team, that you'd be saying "Cool, one less team to contend with". Seems to me like you are not addressing the fact that Melo, AI and JR could be lethal together. every championship team has had at least 2 guys that commanded the ball and that could take over a game. AI get to play along side the first superstar of his career.

My cat, named after Miller, is sad. That said, we'll both be fine when Iverson leads us past the first round this year. I'm amped. I wish Dre nothing but the best (and still need to get a 3rd jersey with the #24 Miller on the back), but we had to do the deal.

Supposedly it was Chicago but that was never confirmed 100% although over on realGM Philly had a source confirm it was Chicago who also called the trade today. All that was said is that a team got involved and then pulled out last minute. I am not sure on all involved except what I posted as things went from that 3 way deal to quiet over the weekend to the trade today. Again I know the Nuggets wanted to keep as much as they could and not sell the house so I think the trade we got today was much better.

The 76ers got bent over in that deal. Since they acquired a vet who can actually play, they are no longer going to be the worst team in the league. You guys are going to end up with 5-8th pick, no salary cap space, and two late first round picks that equal out to be early second round picks.

The Sixers clear 16 million off their cap after this season (Smith's 6.8 + 10 million difference between AI and Miller) And something like 26 million when Webber's contract expires the following year.

Who says the Sixers are keeping Dre?

SportinOne
12-20-2006, 05:27 AM
The one reason i don't see this working out is because of George Karl.

I think it's possible that Carmelo and Iverson could co-exist. It's not really probable, but possible. Sure, at first they will be like any new couple. ESPN will eat it up. We'll see what happens

But George Karl couldn't even get along with Ray Allen or Sam Cassell. How on earth will he handle AI? On paper, this is really something to be excited about for Nuggets fans. If you make this trade on NBA Live '07 you're golden. But i think this was the wrong move for Denver to make. We'll see.

bendog
12-20-2006, 09:47 AM
Yeah on the Karl angle. It's why he wanted to keep Miller rather than JR. With Miller he could still control the game, but with "the answer" at PG ..... God only knows, and he prolly has no clue as to what AI will do ... other than put it up. The RMN says they're thinking about bringing in a vet PG anyway, and moving "the answer" to SG. How they match up defensively then, I dunno. But maybe it'll be a return to English/Kiki and who needs D, but with Karl I don't think so.

Karl has wanted melo to move w/o the ball more and more, but with the lack of a no.2 guy with K-Mart being a no show, that's been on hold. Assuming "the answer" isn't at PG, they can now run set plays for melo cutting with "the answer" keeping teams from being able to just collapse and force Den to shoot from outside. "the answer" is indeed maybe the answer, cause no doubt he can shoot. We'll see whether he wants to win a championship.

Money wise it looks like Stan's making up the luxury tax with added tix sales ... he makes money on everything he does, cause if a move doesn't make money, he doesn't make the move. It's tenatively a two year deal to win a champrionship. After 'the answer's" contract is up after next season, Stan'll have to rethink.

heck of a trade. Miller's a decent PG, but Smith is .... old. And the two no1 picks are late ones. Besides Miller all Den gave up was money, and they don't lack that.

bendog
12-20-2006, 09:56 AM

I dont know if both of those players would be alright with taking 3-5 less shots a game.

ps, I think the shots come from JR and Camby, but, hopefully, with teams not being able to collapse on melo in the half court game, his shooting% will increase, so he may be happy to put more energy into D and become the total and great player he has the potential to become.

Ive always loved the hell out of Moe, since I was like 6 years old, and Karl deserves a retirement ring. Its gonna be a hoot watching them coach this team now. If Martin comes back next year, and they dont have any major injury problems, they have all the talent they need to win a title.

And the great thing about this whole deal is that we now have something to REALLY keep us entertained during the offseason.

The Lakers would not want Miller; he cannot shoot. Jackson likes his PG's to be able to knock down 18-20 footers with consistency. Acquiring Miller would be like getting Gary Payton again and we all know how that turned out.

Jackson likes guys like Paxson, Kerr, Armstrong, Parker and Farmer. Guys who can actually shoot. That is why they went overseas and signed Shammond Williams, who is a hell of shooter but not much of a playmaker.

Andre In Play?: Don’t pick up that Andre Miller Sixers jersey just yet. Word is Andre may be on the move again as teams have been gauging Philly’s commitment to him. Word is they may be willing to re-trade him for the right parts. Miller was a perfect fit for the 76ers as they started life after Iverson, but the common belief is Andre was not happy to go from a winner to a loser, and that if a better spot could be found his people have encouraged a deal. The Lakers had been linked to interest as have the Cavaliers, so there are teams on the phone. The question becomes what's the package, and would that package give Philly enough chips to land two picks in the top of the 2007 draft class? It’s been said several times that Philly views either Greg Oden, Kevin Durant or Joakim Noah as their next franchise guy – could dealing Andre Miller now yield a shot at two of the three? Wouldn’t that be a steal for the 76ers?
