“Jay gives us the best chance to Win NOW” and he proved it…
Man, it just doesn’t get any better than this. How could we have written a better script for the Cardinals game? Cutler was unbelievable, more than that amazing, the 60 yard bomb thrown perfectly to Walker in stride for an easy score made my jaw drop to the floor. That big play set the tone for the rest of the game. I like the term “WOW.” When was the last time I saw a QB make a throw that made say “WOW”? Does this obviously goofy question even need an even more obvious answer?
One thing I won’t spend much time doing here is making comparisons between Jay and Jake. There are no comparisons, if you watch a lot of football and understand the game Jay’s play on the field today proved that even though this was only his third game he deserves the starting job. In almost every phase of the game Jay in 3 games has outplayed Jake in 11, not just in the physical part of game but the mental part too. All the debate about the QB change should now be officially over for all forward thinking Broncos Fans.
Before I start gushing Jay with to much more praise let’s give credit were credit is due, the Offensive Line did a terrific job in pass protection. Jay was 21 for 31, for 261 yards, completing 67.7% of his passes for 2 Touchdown’s and only 1 Interception. He was sacked only one time. He was hurried a few times but he handled the pressure very well. Even after the sacks and the hurries Jay remained poised and confident. When they did hurry him he got the ball off quick and he didn’t seemed rattled at all by the blitz.
His throws, whether they were deep or short were sharp, quick, on time and easy balls to catch. Most of time they were right on stride (the Smith TD) to the WR’s. He had really only one bad play in the whole game and that was INT he threw. Still, if you take that play away, he played a fairly smart mistake free game.
Man, Oh Man, did Jay spread the field and the ball around…
Walker had 5 receptions for 84 yards, Marshall 5 for 58 yards, Scheffler 3 for 58 yards, Smith 4 for 40 yards and even Nate Jackson got 1 catch for 7 yards. It’s the first time in recent memory that I’ve seen the Broncos passing game click and move with some rhythm. I loved to see Walker and Smith play well but I’m even happier to see Marshall week to week get more catches and produce. Marshall has the potential to be a big threat for the Broncos the rest of the way and into the future.
Champ has to be considered the MVP for the Broncos maybe the NFL…
Champ is just so dog nuts spectacular all the time you sort of take for granted that he’ll come up with key INT at the right time. The 2 today were just as important as any of the others this season. The way he can make up ground quick is like Flash from the Incredibles. The second INT really showcased that ability. He can close faster than any Corner in the league right now. He’s hands down the MVP for the Broncos up to this point in the season.
Running Game fumbled & sputtered but was just enough…
T. Bell never really was a threat in this game; he had 18 rushing attempts for 23 yards. M. Bell didn’t have a tremendous day either really, 16 rushes for 61 yards, but when he was in the game he made plays at opportune times. He did put the biscuit in the basket twice but the 2 fumbles tarnished his glow a little. His 2 we recovered thankfully but T. Bell’s fumble probably kept this game from being a blowout early. It was just our day today and thankfully the bounces went our way.
I’m not sure if it’s our OL was just that ineffective in the running game or if the Cards DL & LB’s were just that good or maybe a combination of the two. The Cards LB’s were very active and did a good job filling the running lanes. Since the Broncos were actually a threat to get the ball downfield in the passing game the weakness in running game wasn’t as big a factor as it could have been. No matter what your opinion is, in order for us to continue into the playoffs we have to be able to run the ball better than we did today.
Quincy Morgan’s Special Teams Contribution…
The Broncos had the worst average starting field position (starting on their own 26) on Offensive than any other team in the NFL going into this game. You have to give Shanahan credit for not just sitting on his hands and doing nothing about this glaring weakness. Morgan’s 2 big Kick Returns give the O a short field which is not a position they’ve been in to many times this season. Hopefully Kircus will be a better Punt Returner than Williams at least in the hands department anyway.
The D played back to early season form…
Champ was Champ been there done that already, so what about the rest of the D? The Cards only put up 60 yards of total offense in the first half how can you complain about that? Some will still criticize the lack of a pass rush in this game but on the stat sheet they had 3 sacks and many more big hits and hurries on Leinart. In the first half the Broncos secondary didn’t allow Boldin or Fitzgerald to make a single catch. .Both put up some catches and yards late in the game, but it was all but over. Foxworth, Paymah and Cargile did an amazing job in pass coverage and made a lot of big tackles too. James had 63 yards rushing and most of those yards came late. Overall you can say it was the best defensive performance since the second Raiders game.
Win and we’re in…
I never gave up hope on this team and I still won’t. The best way to make the playoffs is to play your best football late in the season. Many teams that don’t play well early in the season but get hot at the end can and will eliminate teams with better regular season records. I’m a Broncos Homer but I know that it’ll be a difficult road and speaking of roads, the Broncos will have to play well on it if they make it to the playoffs.
The Bengals game will be just the right test to see if the Broncos can take their game to the next level. I’m cautiously optimistic and I believe that the talent and the team is there if they can put it all together and play a complete game like they did yesterday. I’m already so excited to see the Bengals game on Christmas Eve that I can barley contain the pounding of the orange blood in my chest. Santa please bring home that Mile High Christmas Magic and give us a win.
Win and we’re in baby! I believe, I do believe…
