View Full Version : Whoops! Probably not the smartest thing Mora, Jr. could say.

It's not even in the ball park of his old man's infamous "Playoffs?!!!! Playoffs?!!!!" meltdown. But it's always fun to watch one of these guys not only stick the knife in their own back, but twist it as well.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. - Atlanta Falcons coach Jim Mora Jr. is apparently feeling the pressure.

Mora admitted he covets the coaching job at the University of Washington during an interview on a Seattle radio station, and later apologized to the Falcons for his comments.

Mora’s bizarre actions come a day before the Falcons (7-6) are to host the Dallas Cowboys (8-5) in a game with major playoff implications.

But instead of talking about the Cowboys, Mora went on KJR Radio in Seattle to express his desire to coach at Washington, where Mora played as a linebacker and also served as a student assistant under former coach Don James.

“If (Washington coach) Tyrone Willingham ever decided to move on, if the job became open, you will have me at the head of line with resume in hand, I promise you that,” Mora told KJR. “That’s the job I want.”

That obviously did not sit well with the Falcons, who are battling for a wild-card spot in the NFC. Mora later issued a statement to apologize for his actions, which he said were meant in jest.

“First and foremost, I’m sorry,” Mora said in the statement. “Despite my off-the-cuff intentions, what I said was not appropriate for my players, the Falcons organization and our fans, and Tyrone Willingham. I got too relaxed with the radio talk show host who is a former college roommate, and I got carried away with the banter.

“I want every fan in Atlanta to know that my heart and passion are right here with the Falcons and winning our game this weekend.”

But Mora is clearly feeling the heat in Atlanta after owner Arthur Blank announced earlier this month that another 8-8 finish would be unacceptable.

Blank was clearly not pleased with this incident.

“Everyone, including Jim, needs to be focused on winning tomorrow’s (Saturday’s) game,” Blank said in the statement. “We don’t want this event to be a distraction to him, our other coaches or our players.

“Jim’s passion and commitment to Atlanta has never been a question. He has apologized for inappropriate remarks and understands the broader implications of what he said and how he said it, none of which were intended. We hope our fans will not interpret this in any way as a lack of commitment on anyone’s part at the Falcons.”

The Falcons have won two in a row after losing four straight to move into a tie with the New York Giants and Philadelphia in the wild-card race.

Atlanta finished 11-5 and went to the NFC championship game in Mora’s first year as coach in 2004, but slipped to 8-8 last season.

Who wouldn't want out of that nightmare? The franchise is finacially commited to a bad quarterback... from both a salary cap and fan base scenario. Falcon fans would rather watch Vick loose than Schaub win.

He's "exciting" though. :approve:

If by "exciting" you mean "one trick pony" then I'll have to agree...

I'm calling shenannigans if Mora says this statement was a mistake. I'm going to go with the "what can I say to make absoluetly sure I get canned at season's end" scenario...

I would think that a job with the Huskies would be highly preferred to Atlanta. That area is beautiful, and the fans are rabid and they can recruit well. Even if he said it, I would thinkmore highly of him if he'd said that he did say that and honestly felt it in his heart. He then could say that the "Devil made him say it".

That's so funny it's a gut buster/tear maker. Not the comment because it was honest, the pathetic apology if what was hillarious and in jest. I like Mora, but that was stupid and he realized it. Especially with 3 games in a playoff struggle against a division leader in Dallas, who has their own moron.

"They" were talking about Defense...DEFENSE man..." Actually T.O. they are talking about your league leading 11 drops, in case you missed it during your nap. I see someone with selective hearing. Anyway, back to Mora.

I remember when Florida came begging, but that was an open position, Shanny was allumni and it was a friend that came calling. He felt obligated to see him and we were all sitting on pins. This was right after the Griese debacle if I remember right. I guess the point is he never made a comment that he was even interested, but I know he considered it. However, it would of been dumb given his compeditive nature.

If Shanny burns out, then I really don't have a problem with his taking a year off to recharge his batteries and get a lazyboy college gig ala Spurrier, but that isn't him, at least yet. Getting Cutler and saying he was going to coach for at least another decade in Denver was no coincidence. The fact is he's got an elite job with elite pay in elite training and game facilities with elite fans. If Shanny resigned, there would be a line at the door that rivals the lines at Hotel Street for "What not" in WW2.

Anyway, I believe that his apology is real, but his original comment was sinciere. Talking heads have only recently turned their attention to the new messiah from Vick to VY. I'm not sold at all. I was never sold on Vick either, but it took 6 years for them to lose interest after basically handing him a playoff spot.

Mora can do one thing to take the heat off...get to 10-6.

Another comment from PFT that cracked me up in the interview with Mora. That guy hates the situation that he's in... I'd hate it too but it pays the bills, easily.

"I don't care if we're in the middle of a playoff run," Mora said. "I'm packing my stuff and going back to Seattle. . . . The further I get away from it, the more I'm drawn to it. That's the job I want."
Asked if he would leave the Falcons for that job, Mora said, "Absolutely."

Remember, they're NFC. There was talk for a while of Ohio State getting an NFC playoff spot but since OSU would be favored in blowouts, they decided against it. Now, if Atlanta was in the AFC, they wouldn't even be allowed on playoff picture charts.
