View Full Version : Vernon Davis Handling the Media Like an Old Pro

If that Old Pro is Terrell Owens.

San Francisco TE Vernon Davis pinned the blame on QB Alex Smith for two throws the Packers intercepted in crucial situations in Week 14. "We just made mistakes with throws that should have been higher," Davis said in the Contra Costa Times. "I did what I'm supposed to do: Sell the run, take off and get into the wide corner. I was open. Did you see that? He should have thrown it quicker and a little over the top."

"Did you see that?"

Said Smith: "I was trying to make something happen. I thought Vernon was going to flatten toward the sideline."

Since Vernon was a guy a ton of people wanted Denver to trade up for, the question must be asked: Would it have taken Vernon this long to say something about his QB's play if he was a Bronco?

That sucks. Another great talent going down the drain. At least Owens just insinuated everything, he never came out and said a specific player couldn't do his job. Well, he didn't say it until the all out word war was underway.

I don't know about that, but I do know it took a couple years before Terrell became a handful in the lockerroom. From what I understand, he was quiet and respectful as a wide eyed rookie. Of course, Owens didn't come in as a first round pick, either.

I wanted Vernon but I didn't want him for a top ten or even top 20 pick. I just don't think tight ends should be taken that high.

I know you can find some good ones (Gonzalez, Shockey and Winslow if you want to count him) but two of those are total flava clowns and only Gonzo seems to be worth it.

Witten, Gates, Sharpe, Crumpler, all these guys were taken later in the draft. Heap was the very last pick in the first round and that's acceptable to me considering what he can do. I guess I just feel that the first round should be reserved for talent that you are going to use a lot and can make an immediate impact on your team: Left tackles, receivers, quarterbacks, running backs, defensive linemen, linebackers and corners.

yeah i was in the VD boat. bad comment by the kid. hes a kid. as someone mentioned, this seems very out of character for him. he was very humble from all i saw(remember him crying when he was drafted?). scheff and VD have both had their moments in the sun, both have missed significant game action(injuries and deactivations). an interesting side note, i have seen both of them run end-arounds. i cant think of any other TEs that i have seen do that.

I remain a proponent of the best available athlete theory, within reason.

One reason you don't like to pick tight ends (or safeties and guards) too high is because you can wind up paying a rookie more than established All Pros just based on where he slots salary wise. Vernon Davis is already the highest paid tight end in the NFL. No wonder he has a big head.

I agree Slap. IMO there is simply no reason to draft a TE, no matter who they are, in the first round. And the fact he makes more money then Gonzo, Gates, Shockey, or Winslow is just pathetic.

That's how we ended up with Lelie... I had to eat crow on that one with Chiefs fans, because I had been telling them that I wouldn't want him before the second round.

I wish I was clever enough to come up with a good Winslow joke here. In lieu of that, I'm just going to mention that I wish I had one, and hope you'll humor me and laugh at the thought of a good joke about how valuable Kellen Winslow is. Also, I'll post a link to his player profile page for people who refuse to humor me, and need an honest to God punch line (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/493125).

I keep thinking of that nice kid on the rookie bus during draft week - crying when he was picked...

Is it possible he was just (innocently) describing what happened on the plays, and it just sounds like finger-pointing?

I'll go one step further in the "Best Available Athlete" direction...

I'll Say Best Available FOOTBALL Player. Lelie, as it turns out, doesn't seem to be much of a true football player...

Football Player = Physical (athleticism) + Mental (aptitude) + Toughness + Work Ethic.

If you say so. I think Ed Reed was clearly the BAA on the board, but we were determined to add that third WR. To me, that made the Lelie pick one of perceived need.

Well, to be fair, a lot of boards had Lelie in the top 12 to 15 and very few expected him to fall any lower than Atlanta @ 17. So, he may well have been the highest player on their board. If only we had had a good magic 8 ball in the war room that fateful day.

Yep - Every year you see these guys who turn everyone's head off the football field, but have done nothing on the field. Looks like SF got two of them this year.

Trust me, Vernon Davis did just fine on the football field. Caught 51 pass at 17.1 yards per reception his final season on a Maryland team that had an overwise bad offense. He'll be fine if he ever gets a QB who can get him the ball.

Reeves screwed us one last time by not taking Lelie. Things have a way of sorting out tho. Reeves is in a golf cart, Duckett is the power back to spell Portis, and Lilly is in Atlanta where he should of gone in the first place. BTW, he has 373 yards and ZERO touchdowns. Great career move.

Alex Smith sucks quite honestly. He had a freakin 40 rating last year. VD is just being honest, and he's frustrated. He shouldn't of opened his mouth like that, but it's the truth. As far as SF goes, SoCal nailed the Gore draft even tho he's torn up both knees. He came super cheap and takes some pressure off Smith. SoCal has a good eye for backs.

Cutler and VD simply tore it up in Senior bowl practices. VD is a high character guy but is frustrated. His contract is right in line with such a high pick...you don't have to tell me that athletes get rediculous compensation. Pitchers in MLB in the American leage is simply comical. They pitch every 4th or 5th day, don't have to go up to the plate and are still paid a kings ransom. They don't have to go across the middle.

As far as his going so high, his combine numbers and Senior Boiwl workouts showed he was probably worth it. Even if Cutler wasn't here, I would take VD over Smith. You can get a shot for VD but Alex Smith is incurable.

Probably but there is still no reason to throw your QB under the bus. This shouldnt be addressed to the media ever.

All I know is I was pissed off.

Had we not wasted our number one on Middlebrooks the year before, I'm sure we would have taken Reed.

while this quote doesn't mean that Davis is of the TO essence, his comments are poorly stated...like Smith, he should have said that he "expected" this, or that the play was designed to work like this and that Smith didn't put it there...making it about him just creates trouble...save it for the film sessions

I thought it would have been nice to have Vernon Davis on this team, but I thought a pass rusher was a more immediate need. As it turns out, we didn't get either one and we now have our QB and a play-making WR. I'm glad that I don't take it personally that the front office doesn't listen to me...

Your avatar makes me laugh. The commerical came out in 84 when I was in the second grade. "Where's the beef" was everywhere. One time driving home my sister says "Where's the beef" and I repeat something I heard at school "It's between Wendy's buns" my mom turned around and slapped me.
