View Full Version : Stinky on Espn: Broncos can get to the Superbowl with Cutler

Just heard Stink say he thinks the Broncos could still get to the Super Bowl with Cutler. Just says we have to open up the offense and maybe re-install the shotgun to help Jay out. Its good to hear that some people havent written off the season yet. He also said that Shanahan should have put Cutler in 6 weeks ago.

I agree with Stink. I think that we could get there. Just like with Plummer, I think it would take a special coaching effort on Shanahan's part, as well as the entire team pulling together for once (as opposed to one side carrying the other).

It's going to be awfully hard, but I'm doing my best to keep hope alive. Just don't see how Cutler is going to do with it being only his 2nd game and all. If he had 6 weeks prior to this to tune-up and get used to the NFL game it might be different, but the timing just doesn't seem right to me.

Thats the thing Jay cant do it....atleast not by himself but then again neither could Jake if he were starting. To beat the chuggers in SD the way they are playing right now will take a 100% team effort in all 3 phases of the game. Then add in a couple of breaks and winning the TO battle we may have a chance if all that happens.

The 3 step drop didn't work at all... usually by the 3rd step there was an O-Lineman getting pushed back nearly into Cutler. In that situation it seems like would almost have been better for him to throw off the back foot ala Jake.

Actually, he had a pass to Javon that was off his back foot. The difference is he had the arm strength to get it to the receiver. It isnt recommended he do that but he will learn with time.

Yeah... and hopefully the superior accuracy that people have been raving about shows true in such situations. To me it almost seems that our QBs have to throw off the back foot and the "happy feet" with the way our line pass-blocks. I think Jay learned the hard way in the Seattle game. In addition to more shotgun formations, I'd like to see more two-back formations on passing downs. Can't remember too many times this year where a back has blocked the pass rush effectively, but I do remember a bunch of times where it would have helped.

He can definitely use more protection back there. problem is our backs are not very good blockers, at least the starting bells. You could tell with some of Jay's passes that he has some zip on them and can get it where it needs to be. But, to operate in the Bronco system he will have to learn to throw on the move as well. That just comes with the territory but im sure he had a lot of butterflies that night. Hopefully with the warmer climate he will be a little looser and more relaxed.

Generally, if you go to the Super Bowl you go to the Playoffs. It works hand in hand.

Shanahan said himself Cutler gives the Broncos the best opportunity to win. If he believes his own statements (and I believe he does) I have faith he will provide Cutler the tools to be successful.
I find it very unfortunate through the 11 weeks under Plummer not one opportunity came forward for Cutler to gain some "mop up" game time experience. We played our share of weak teams with a well seasoned veteran QB.

People think he got the nickname Stinky because he smelled bad, and altho he urinated in his uniform EVERY GAME according to him...that's actually not how he got his name, according to him.
He's from Alaska...I don't remember exactly, but it had something to do with Eskimos that bury fish heads for several weeks in the sand then dig them up and eat them...how revolting...stink heads. Now why Eskimos would do such a thing is rather baffling, but evidently they do. I don't remember the whole story, but he was called stink head, and it got shortened to stink later in the NFL.

They (Eskimos) do that because it is dark all winter long and the fish breath is how they find each other. It's not a perfect system sometimes they find the wrong end.

Back to the subject at hand...Several of us have mentioned and wondered why the shotgun wasn't used Sunday night...the media must read the mane, because that question is being asked everywhere now.
You don't HAVE to pass out of the shotgun at all, as long as you KEEP A BACK IN. You can also run an end around or a reverse. Or you can run the QB draw. The three step drop when they are bringing the house on the rook was idiotic. He's supposed to make a one second read as a rookie?
Nalen is older and never was a dominant pusher...he never did have the size and now is in his twilight...and they expect him to stand up a DT at the LOS? I don't know WTF they were thinking.
Hell, I guess it's good enough for Government work but it's not going to get us to the playoffs. PUT IN THE SHOTGUN.
Alaskans are the most hilariously interesting people I've ever me. I love 'em to death.
I spotted him :strong: (lifting, not looking in his general direction) many knee surgeries ago in said state.
He indeed, is "stinky."
Sticky too, but that's for another time, and another topic. ugh!~
And re: the shotgun;
We did use it, at least twice on two different drives. Wasn't that successful as I recall, but it was used.

Mock I see your point and to add to it Cutler played shotgun a lot back in Vandy. However, Denver sets up the pass by running. The hand off from SG does not set up the cut back very well as the RB pretty much starts from a standing position then steps and has to read the flow. Where as in a regular drop back handoff the RB runs to the QB tries to make a read and hits the hole running. I think that kind of negates Shanny's system.

Well alot of talking heads are wondering why it wasn't used more. My point is you don't HAVE to pass out of the gun. I don't remember more than just a few plays out of the gun. It's hard to measure it's success because it was barely used. The 3 step drop certainly wasn't working. Nalen got pushed back right into him consistently. My point was that neither he, in his twilight, or even Ben Hamilton, are not equipped with the size to stand up DT's.

I see your point Mock and maybe we see that this weekend. It just kind of negates the Bronco running game if they use that routinely. Maybe that gives Cutler a better look at whats coming at him as he is standing still watching it coming rather than moving back and making reads.
