View Full Version : One thing about the QB change

There is something people seem to ignore. Now ignore for a moment the media-induced, politically correct babble that Shanahan had to concoct to help Jake save some face. He wasn't going to say the truth.

The reason there was a change was NOT because Jay Cutler gives us a "better chance to win." In a nutshell, Jake lost the starting job because of his anemic playmaking ability. He was benched because of his play. It doesn't really matter imo who the other QB was. Jake was going to get benched regardless, because he sure as hell wasn't getting it done.

Even last year, he didn't do anything but "manage" games. He certainly never made game-saving plays, or carried the team on his shoulders at any point in his career in Denver so far. This year, he has been just horrible. His ratings are right there around the worst in the NFL. He personally has made game-losing mistakes. Including two critical ones in the last two games he played, both in the fourth quarter, when we needed him to do something amazing. Not something boneheaded.

Jay didn't steal Jakes job. Jay is in because Jake lost his job because of crappy play, nothing more, nothing less. Who cares what Mike tells the media.

If he could have said it, I imagine the more truthful statement would have been "We feel that not playing Jake Plummer gives us the best chance to not lose games right now." Because that's the bottom line.

I have a feeling that Mike knows quite well that Jay was going to struggle. He probably even know this had a fine chance to be a loss. And I don't think he cared. He wanted Jake on the bench, and Jay to get playing time in. Because Jake is done. He ain't got game as they say. His lack of performance got him benched, that is why Jay is playing, no matter what he tells the media.

Did you really expect him to say "We think Jake sucks so badly right now, we have no confidence in his ability to win a game. And in fact, we expect he'll throw more games away. We are having to dumb down the playbook for this 10 year veteran, and therefore, we are benching the bum."

I also think people should give Jay more than ONE game to prove he can get it done. Hell, people gave Plummer more than half the season, and kept saying "give him a chance!" "He always starts out slow, give him a chance!" And then "He is just in a slump, give him a chance!" Crap, give Jay more than his very first game as an NFL QB to prove he can get it done.

look beyond the QB as the issue, Grasshopper.

I like what you have said. But we have been over this all week as well.

Plain and simple you have your 3 camps:

Plummerologists: They wanted to stay with Jake they wouldn't have been happy no matter what.

Cutlerologists: They are routing for him and know he is young and raw. They have patience.

Insaneologists: There are some people who fully expected him to come in and hit the ground running.

You will get reactions with each. Now all that matters is the team and routing them on like BMF said in his thread.

There are more issues than QB, there always are. Show me a team with no issues whatsoever, and I'll show you the next unbeaten NFL team for the entire season. But Plummer accounted for more issues than people admit. Bad field position? Blame our special teams? I don't, I blame 3-and-outs in consecutive drives to start games. He did this two games in a row. We end up inside the 20, then inside the 10 because of his inability to do anything on third down. Defense is on the field far more than they should be. I can't count the # of times defenders saved Jake's butt from the fire. Jake tosses a pick, and our defense (and Champ) gets it back in the redzone. That is the only reason we squeezed out some wins, NOT by virtue of Jake, but by the virtue of our other players.

Yes, we have some issues, but our biggest problem is scoring. If we score like we used to, even say 28 points a game, we are a juggernaut.

Some areas of the team have let us down during some games. Jake has let the team down almost every game.

1. From the moment he was drafted in the first round, Cutler was always going to take over the starting QB job... it was just a matter of when he did it.

2. Plummer would most likely have remained the starter throughout the '06 season had he played at an acceptable level (read: not among the five lowest-rated starting QBs in the league).

3. Had the backup QB been a true backup like a Danny Kanell, rather than the acknowledged QBOTF, then it might have been a more difficult decision for the coaches to bench a struggling veteran.

4. Plummer's precipitous drop in performance level, coupled with his inevitable successor on the bench behind him equalled a very predictable earlier start for the kid.

Shanny would NOT have benched Jake for Van Pelt. I guarantee it.

Cutler is a whole different player from Van Pelt, though... he's a bona fide blue chip rookie who has the potential to make all of us Broncos fans proud for many seasons to come.

There are still these crazies that call into AM 950 the fan that say Shanahan's biggest regret will be letting Van Pelt go.

Some of you are on this board and I LAUGH AT YOU! HA!

It depend on what Shanahan was attempt to win at, if it was Football nope but if it was a competitive game of beer pong I think BVP is the man.

So whats your point?

Did you not read the first post? He said, "It doesn't really matter imo who the other QB was."

You are not far off here, but it has been many years since we had a guy Shanny would turn to as his #1 over Jake. We finally had an option.
