Jake Plummer on third down: 40%

Cutler on third down: 67%.

Uh-oh! Maybe there's something there after all! ;)

In fact Cutler peformed better on third down than on first or second down. We've got many more games to play, but that's something I like to see.

Just to prove that facts are meaningless unless you look behind them:

1 12:35 0 - 0 3rd-and-1 own 48 pass intended for Javon Walker incomplete
1 9:55 0 - 0 3rd-and-8 own 45 pass intended for Tony Scheffler incomplete
1 4:27 0 - 0 3rd-and-5 opp 9 sacked: -10 yards
2 13:13 3 - 0 3rd-and-6 own 6 pass complete to Cecil Sapp for 1 yards
2 8:02 3 - 0 3rd-and-8 opp 47 pass complete to Stephen Alexander for 9 yards (first down)
2 2:44 10 - 7 3rd-and-4 opp 46 pass complete to Rod Smith for 6 yards (first down)
2 0:53 10 - 7 3rd-and-10 opp 34 pass complete to Nate Jackson for 9 yards
3 13:32 13 - 7 3rd-and-6 own 38 pass complete to Javon Walker for 12 yards (first down)
3 11:57 13 - 7 3rd-and-7 opp 47 pass complete to Tony Scheffler for 15 yards (first down)
3 6:30 13 - 7 3rd-and-10 own 40 sacked: -9 yards
3 2:33 13 - 7 3rd-and-7 own 23 pass intended for Javon Walker incomplete
4 14:20 13 - 7 3rd-and-6 own 5 sacked: -3 yards

So he actually got four first downs throwing on 12 attempts....25%. Not quite as cherry red as you would indicate.

67 percent? What are you smoking?

Here are Cutler's third downs where he dropped back to pass:

1. Incomplete
2. Incomplete
3. Sacked
4. Complete for 1 yard
5. Complete for 9 yards and a first down.
6. Complete for 6 yards and a first down. Rod fumbles.
7. Complete for 9 yards. No first down.
8. Complete for 12 yards. First down.
9. Complete for 15 yards. First down.
10. Sacked.
11. Incomplete.
12. Sacked.

Cutler dropped back 12 times on third down. He got 4 first downs. Woohoo!

By the way, sacks aren't counted against your completions on third down. I know you might say "well they should". Well if we went back looked at the number of times Plummer was sacked on third down his completion percentage would be much lower. Even if we didn't and we STILL used the stats the way Rascal wants to, 25% is still higher than Plummer by two percentage points so...

NO MATTER HOW YOU SLICE IT, WE GOT BETTER ON THIRD DOWN THROWING THE BALL!

I'll drink to that!

LOL @ Khan

I was impressed by that throw he made on third down under heavy pressure. I think it was to Javon. That was good to see. :)

How amusing. It was Cutler's fault Coyer went to a prevent defense in a tie game with two minutes and timeouts remaining for Seattle.

It's the Marshall's fault for scoring too fast...Cecil did the same thing, but he was smart enough to stop at the one. Ha!

I never said that it was perfect or even great. I said that it shot up in one game. My point is that our rookie QB is more clutch on third down than Plummer is. I'd be willing to bet it will only get better, too.

I wouldn't say shot up, but yes there was improvement. One can only hope it improves a lot for next week (as does our protection).

Bad Jay is better than Bad Jake and Good Jay will be better than Good Jake.

At least we can blame it on him being a rookie, with the potential to get better.

I blame it on him getting used to game speed. You can't simulate game speed in practice.

I also saw one of the best arms in the League.

Lost in that Plimptonesque pick six was the strength he showed in initially shrugging off defensive end Bryce Fisher.

Credit Brandon Marshall or bad tackling, but Jay did tie the game up late in the fourth quarter.

Also a good excuse.

He does have a cannon, but then so does Favre. Hopefully he isn't as much of a careless gunslinger.

He is strong, as evidenced by his 22-23 reps at the combine.

Yes we did, till our overrated defense stepped on the field led by their slightly above average coach Coyer.

Jay Cutler struggled Sunday. But the rookie had a higher QB rating (62.3) than Seattle s Matt Hasselbeck (59.8), who has played in a Super Bowl.

1) Qb rating is moronic.

2) Hass had arm issues, which anyone watching this game would've noted either through comparison or simply paying attention to commentary. For that matter: following the nfl thereafter.

Cutler played ugly. But the zip on his throw was evident, and come next year things will look quite different. But don't be ridiculous and look for silver linings to what was, understandably, a piss poor performance. Ixnay that td(which we can chalk up to marshall and some 9th rate tackling) and your precious qb rating dips into the minnesota weather.

Know that it's gonna take him time. Don't go trying to rah-rah when there's nothing to cheer about yet.

***UPDATE!!!***

So after three games...

Cutler on third down: 14 of 24 58% completion 128 yards 5.3 yards per attempt - though he did get his first interception on third down this last game.

Third down conversions when passing: 40%

For comparison. Plummer was floating at 45% completion on third down and had five interceptions. We also were only converting third downs through the air 17% of the time when attempted.

Kaylore

Scheffler and Marshall coming on has also helped, but it's really about the guy under center.

I don't know about all the numbers, all I know is this. When Jake was playing, and it was third down and we needed more then 3 yards, I figured we were punting or kicking a field goal. I never assumed we'd complete it. I figured we'd blow it. That's how low his play made my confidence. Yesterday, at the second half, I was suddenly "comfortable" again, something I didn't have since Elway. When Elway was playing and it was third down, I had not only a sense of comfort, but high confidence we'd convert it. With Jay, he'll need to work to get to that point, but he is already to the point where I don't feel it's automatically a punting situation because it's 3rd and 9.

That's a very fast progression for Jay, I'm impressed.

Paladin
12-18-2006, 03:19 PM
Jeez. How long will it be before the comparisons to Plummer will be passe? Or even more stupid than they are now? It is dumb to keep trying to convince people that Jay is "better" than Jake.

Right now, it doesn't f**king matter. Jay is the QB, and I think he has the support of Broncos fans. I am not inot stroking anyone's ego as "right" or "wrong". There were some differences of opinions regarding a course of action for this year, but no one could deny that Jay had what it would take to play the game. He seemingly has all the tools. I am ecstatic that the Broncos were able to draft him. But I see no reason to keep comparing Jay to someone who isn't playing now.

I just hope the D and the STs keep on going, and let's see what happens. Even if it is "one and done" the experience will be great, and I think the prospects for next year are tremendous. Anything from this year is a bonus.

Broncos4tw
12-18-2006, 03:27 PM
Probably Paladin, because some fans are still a little bitter. I know I saw many posts towards people who wanted Jay to start, calling them "Jake Haters" and all that, calling them stupid, etc., because Jake was our "best option" and it wasn't the QB, it was the rest of the team!

I for one, just wanted our team to have the best chance to win, and felt Jay was the one to do that. I imagine the comparisons will continue a couple more weeks or even perhaps until the off-season, but when Jake goes, it will probably die down. Griese talk continued for two years after he left, but maybe this will go faster.

BroncoFanDoug

Bad Jay is better than Bad Jake and Good Jay will be better than Good Jake.

Now that is succinct! Only 1 more difference to highlight.

Jay is only going to get better and better!

Bad Jake Vs. Bad Jay? I don't like either, bad is bad. Good Jay is pretty damn awesome though. I had to watch the play by play on NFL.com, but even without a true visual I started feeling more confidant in 3rd down passing situations. It's a nice feeling.
