View Full Version : Titans-Giants Game Question

I just saw highlights and had a question. In the Giants game, Kiwanuka (SP?) had VY in his grasps on 4th and 10 but had him around his knees so he couldn't see the ball. VY pump faked so Kiwanuka lets go to avoid the roughing call thinking the ball is gone and VY runs for the 1st down and goes on to win the game.
Did rules protecting the QB cost the Giants the game? Without him being able to see if the ball was in fact thrown, what is he expected to do? Do they need to make a 'fair game if in grasps before ball was thrown' rule and stop sissifying the QB position? I just hate to see games won or lost due to wussy rules.

He probably thought Young threw the ball cause he turned and looked downfield.

He clearly thought VY threw the ball on the pump fake and let go just afterward. If he had tackled him and VY had infact thrown the ball, clear roughing penalty and when Titans are driving the field for the tying TD, you definitely don't want a 15 yd roughing pentalty.
I don't know if I'm describing the play correctly, you may have to see the highlight to understand.

I see what you're saying but if the pass was completed, the whistle would still be a few seconds away. You can't just tackle the QB once he's thrown the ball because the whistle hasn't blown.

just wrap him up and hold him til you are sure, don't let go though.

no, you play until you hear the whistle is blown, sorry slug, you can disagree with me as usual because you don't like me, but it's simple
you play until the whistle is blown...the ref yells ball is away if the ball is away (another way to protect the QB...ever hear them..listen to tonights game)
Coughlin agrees with me, he was giving Kiwaunkue an earful

You may be right with the ball away thing though I don't know if they always here the ref. And Coughlin would've been just as livid had VY thrown the ball on that pump fake and Kiwi slammed him down.

Coughlin is an idiot and I'm disagreeing with you, as usual, because you're wrong. If the QB no longer has the ball you let go of him or risk getting a personal foul penalty or so is the mindset these days that defensive players have to endure.

:strong: If you ever played you'd know that your body closes your eyes instinctively at impact for protection but that's not the point. The question is did the rules protecting the QB contribute to a bad decision by Kiwanuka, probably so.

All he had to do was bring him down, without slamming him to the turf, he quit on the play, no way around it.

He had him before he pump faked so had he thrown it there would not have been a roughing the passer called. Kiwanuke made a mental error and the G-men paid for it.
And i think its funny.

If he makes contact with VY as he is pump faking then he has every right to continue the play. If VY pump faked AFTER he made contact, then he has even more right to continue the play and put him on the turf. Guys don't get flagged usually if there is one whole step between the actual throw and the contact so i don't see why he would just let go. I have heard that he said he heard a whistle so he stopped.. It was a freak play. Kiwi just made a rookie mistake and VY took full advantage.

And the main question was and is did the panty boy rules for QBs contribute to Kiwanuka making a mistake on that play, probably so.

It's not roughing the passer if the defender already got to the passer before the ball is thrown. I saw that and I thought WTH?Ha!

FAct is, Kiwi stopped playing and he payed for it.
The ruls are so tight that he probably ASSUMED (nasty word) that the play was dead, thats football 101, dont stop till ref tells ya or whistle blown.

I do think Kiwi thought the ball was gone and didn't want a penalty. The guys on ESPN just mentioned Kiwi got flagged a couple games ago for a late hit on the QB, so you know that was on his mind. Kiwi has stated he won't make that mistake again.

On sportscenter they said numerous times that he thought the whistle was blown, but it really wasn't. Tough luck trying to hear through those two holes in a helmet.

Either way, dems the breaks. Giants LOSE.
They were up 21, so that ONE play didnt cost the Giants the game. It was a whole team meltdown over the final nine minutes...
If a team cant hold that big of lead with that much of the game expired, they deserve to lose.
