View Full Version : Tired of being a Falcons' fan

I've been let down time and time again from the Falcons' organization, so I'm starting to look towards the Broncos. In particular, I'm ready to jump on this Broncos bandwagon before the Jay Cutler era begins. I know he's going to be a great quarterback and I was actually surprised that the Broncos traded up to select him in the draft. Vick has let me down with his inconsistency way too many times. So, basically, I'm ready to root for a winning team for a change. It may seem like I'm just jumping on the bandwagon, but the Broncos have been an interest of mine as a second team for a while. Hopefully, I've chosen the right time to join this winning franchise.

Honestly, i think the Broncos and Falcons are alot alike. Aside from the obvious fact that you guys have our old O-line coach and as a result can run on anyone, you also have a pretty solid defense when your inconsistent offense isn't messing up and giving the D horrible field position. Being a fan of Michael Vick is for the video game junkies. I am a big Madden player but i know the difference between a good football player and some freakish novelty.

Welcome.

I suggest you browse through some of the ring of fame threads to get a feel for some of the more "known" posters around here, as you will have to read alot, and i mean ALOT, of their stuff...

Well, yes. I've been a fan for 10 years (I'm only 19, I've been a fan since I was 9.) I thought Vick was our savior, but so far he's turned out to be no more than just another run of the mill quarterback when it's all broken down. I'm tired of all the mediocre coaches, the mediocre players, and overall the mediocre play. The Falcons have never even had back to back winning seasons, which says a lot about the franchise.

I think he understands that:

A. Running backs don't last long and Rivers is simply above average without LT.

B. Cutler is the son of god.

C. If he joins this board, he will only have to deal with Bolts fans for 3 more weeks. Wait, i guess it would be the same if he joined the Bolts board too.

That really got me to thinking that maybe Woody should stay in NY after all.

This is another reason I know the Broncos are a great team...the fans. The fans of the Falcons are all senile, criticizing every single aspect of the team. Calling for Schaub to start, the coaches (although, I am in on this one...Mora is incompetent as a head coach,) the defense is soft, the offense's game plan is useless, all of the coordinators are worthless. The short time that I've browsed this board, the only criticisms I've seen are of Jake Plummer. Of course, I'm used to it...the criticisms of Plummer are nothing compared to those of Vick.

We've got enough fair weather types around here wishing for QB injuries and Bronco losses.

Show some spine and stick with your team through tough times. The good times will be that much sweeter. The Falcons have done their best to put a good product on the field. They hired a young coach with upside, improved the running game and have been active trying to improve their defense.

Not that any TRUE fan should jump teams, but the Falcons are not a team that deserves to be bailed on. The Raiders, maybe. If they were threatening to leave town, or refusing to put out an effort, you'd have a case. But, they're doing neither.

Get your ass back over there and be a real fan.

You don't know what it's like to be a fan of the Falcons. Annual losing streaks and let downs. Being mediocre this season when this was supposed to be the year we went all the way. It was the year Vick was supposed to learn the "West Coast Offense." It was the third year in Rich McKay's "3 year plan." Fair weather fan might be a slightly accurate description, but I'm not bailing on my team from just this season. You can only put up with losing for so long.

You should have been a Charger fan during the Bobby Bethard era. Minus the one Super Bowl appearance, that guy ran this team into the ground for a decade, traded our #1 draft picks year after year and ran off the one good coach we had since Coryell.

How about losing for a long time, then finally getting good enough to make the playoffs (basically because of one guy) and then getting your ass handed to you in several Superbowls?

Yes, it's better than not getting there... but it's absolutely brutal. You realize that Elway had a rep as a choker, right? Actually, a good portion of the sports world thought of this team as a joke. Of course, we had the last laugh and the morons out there eventually realized they were in the presence of (Elway's) greatness.

I will say, I'm not a huge believer in Vick. I just don't think that style of play transfers to the NFL. It'll work for a while, then teams figure it out. It's happening again this year. Of course, the other half of the time he's injured.

But, I think Mora is a good, young coach. There's lots of upside there.

Stick it out. Make the Broncos your distant, SECOND favorite team... since we're in another conference, and all. :approve:

I don't know what I'd do if I jumped ship, only to have my former team reach the promised land within the next year or two. Plus, if we win another Super Bowl within the next couple years, are you really going to be able to enjoy it that much? No offense, but if you're bailing on the ATL now, what makes us think you won't bail on us too. The Falcons have some good things going on over there. From what I've seen, they're trying to fit a square peg into a round hole with this whole Vick/WCO thing. I don't think it maximizes his abilities.

its not like this is a college team. Pro sports teams are businesses. youre asking him to have loyalty to a corporation. If the falcons franchise isnt committed to winning, than why should their fans be committed to it? You are so lucky to be a fan of an organization that is, pun intended, committed to excellence. were you to leave because the team was playing poorly, that would qualify as being a bad fan. Were you to leave because the corporation is dedicated to profit instead of victory, that is logical.

Let's see...You're upset because you've been rooting for a team that isn't doing well right now. Your team utilizes a zone-blocking scheme and has a mobile quarterback who has been in your system for several years and still can't seem to play consistently. You saw your team make some several offseason moves and manipulate your draft picks to sign big name free-agents only to see the team struggle to utilize them correctly in addition to the injuries on the D-line. Now you are in the middle of the season and the writing is on the wall that you aren't going to make any noise in the postseason if you can make it at all.

Well I'm sorry to tell you that you might want to consider staying a Falcons fan because we're in the exact same situation. Hilarious!

Which is almost exactly what Blank and McKay had in mind when they made Vick the richest football player ever. He did absolutely nothing to earn that money, outside of running fast.

The point is, the Falcons have never won a Super Bowl. The Falcons have no players in the Hall of Fame. The Falcons have never had back to back winning seasons and are on track this season to have back to back "non-winning" seasons. After going 8-8 in a year that I thought we would make a deep playoff run to going 5-5 and declining in a year that I thought we would go the distance, I am convinced the Falcons franchise is cursed. Reeves took us to a Super Bowl, only to lose to his former team and John Elway. Since Reeves, we've overachieved in 2004 to get to the NFC Championship Game. Those of you who say Jim Mora is a great young coach have not heard or looked at him recently. I thought the same thing until this year. However, he has now said that losing is "fun." He loves "adversity." It's what the NFL is all about. He has also stated that he will not criticize Vick for his fumble-itis because he makes great plays along with those fumbles. Mora has lost it this season and I'm afraid it will cost him his job. That means more rebuilding. More scheme changes. More Vick-huggers saying he's in a new system and it will only take time. There's a point in time when watching the NFL just isn't fun anymore being a fan of the Falcons. When I stop having fun watching, it's time to change scenery. The Falcons have had every opportunity to keep my loyalty, but year after year they demolish whatever hopes I have of the team, and I'm through with it.

Yeah, we have a history of losing in all of our sports teams. Georgia Tech is about the best team throughout history. The last time UGA won a National Championship was 1980, Tech 1990. The Braves won a World Series in 1995 but have choked every year since they started their division run otherwise. The Hawks are...the Hawks. So yeah, Atlanta sports teams aren't too prestigious.

If your a bandwagon jumper maybe you should be a colts fan.

If you would've read the post a little closer, it says I've had an interest in the Broncos has a second team for a while.

Well, you might hold on a little longer. Maybe the Falcons will get smart and start Schaub instead.

After handing Vick the contract that basically marries the Falcons to him, Arthur Blank went on record saying "the only way Vick leaves Atlanta is in a pine box." Vick isn't leaving, and Blank won't have his $130 million investment riding the bench.

Too bad. Schaub would do a good job.

I know the feeling. I'm a Mariners fan out of location. But it's hard not to root for the teams you end up seeing in the playoffs. I started to get a connection with the Mets and the Angels because of fantasy baseball, and would switch over to their games because the Mariners pretty much suck.

I'm not ready to make a switch or anything yet. In fact, I'm asking for an Ichiro jersey for Christmas. I'm just saying I understand.

Obviously there will be those who bash you for making the jump.

One thing you're definitely right about. Broncos fans never argue about anything. It's all daisy's and sunshine in Broncomania. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a drum circle to attend.

Stay with the Mariners, the mets are for me!

Just be a fan of the NFL. Don't pick just one team! This way you can choose a new team each offseason based on who wins the Superbowl! :thanku:

If you do choose this path, there's a very good chance you'll be a Chargers fan by the end of January.

That statement's a little over the top for my tastes. But so far Blank is firing "Blanks" with the guy. And just think...if he's a bust the team is bankrupt for years. Back to the cave...http://scosoft.com/s/x/5dd6d06.gif

My suggestion, avoid Bronco Nation. Be a Bronco fan, sure. But at all costs, avoid Bronco Nation because all they do is whine.

Honestly, I give no quarter to bandwagoners of any stripe and have nothing but contempt for them....you either sink or swim with the team (and that's singular meaning ONE team) till death or relocation do you part, there is simply no other honorable way IMHO.

Other team's refugee fans can come aboard the Broncos bandwagon sure....but just like those who have two/three/four teams to root for per sport, I'm not going to take them very seriously, if at all.

Hahaha. Vick is no where near "great," he shows flashes then he'll go 10/22 with 2 picks. It's his 6th season, the excuses are played out. He's no better now than he was in 01/02.

Because you guys can't maintain any organizational consistency. Maybe in 10 years I'll have to correct that statement. But coming up and challenging every few years does not make you a great football town or a great football team. Win some playoff games, show up in 6 Super Bowls. Win EVERY year despite playing a tough schedule and bulls-eye on your back. Win EVERY year without benefit of top 5 picks. Then you will be a great team. Right now you are a flash in the pan. Just because you were the "best 9 - 7 team every last year" doesn't mean you had a good year. You didn't make the playoffs. You choked in the playoffs the year before.

I will give San Diego props for the Rivers and LT draft day trades though. Both of those moves have paid off handsomely. Kinda reminds me of the way we keep flogging the Redskins on trades.

Compared to what? Your lights out offense? You stole our scheme and now you say our offense sucks. Hell Vick said he wished he was in Indy.

Comparing the two I'd take our offense every day of the week, except for the QB. And believe me that's not a compliment to Vick.

Not sure what you mean by "when our other guys get a breather." And the Falcons offense is anemic at best. They came out rushing like no team in history, now they've trailed off even in that aspect. Vick can't pass, Roddy can't catch consistently, Lelie is usually a non-factor, and Dunn is showing his age...he hasn't had 100 yards rushing in the past 5 games or so. Not to mention Greg Knapp...at least be a little educated in your arguments instead of spouting out "your offense svcks." The only thing the Falcons offense has going for them is Jerious Norwood, who is still a rookie and isn't ready to take over yet.

I will give San Diego props for the Rivers and LT draft day trades though. Both of those moves have paid off handsomely. Kinda reminds me of the way we keep flogging the Redskins on trades.

AJ Smith is the main reason for San Diego's turnaround. When John Butler took over as GM, this team was void of talent, minus Jamal Williams thanks to a decade of the worst drafts I've seen until Matt Millen. Butler's mistake was trying to turn the team around too fast with some bad signings like Marcellus Wiley and David Boston and those busts hurt the team greatly in regards to their salary cap, but his drafts were pretty good. AJ Smith's drafts have been as good as any in the NFL for the past few years and his free agent signings have netted good players who fit into the system without breaking the bank (Foley, Godfrey, McCree, Goff).

The success of a team starts at the top. There has been a noticable change when Alex Spanos turned over the power to his son, Dean and Dean has let AJ Smith do what he needs to do. Don't forget that since purging the salaries of Wiley and Boston, the Chargers have been managing their cap as well as anyone in the NFL.

I know Marty does not get a lot of respect around here but he was also very instrumental in turning the team around. Insert the typical 'Marty can't win the big game' comment here but you cannot deny that the man has a great winning record. He may have reached his limit on how far he can take this team (I personally think he's going to have to go very deep into the playoffs or even reach the Super Bowl to keep his job next year) but he was a perfect coach to bring in when they did.

It starts at the top. Hire smart football people who know how to evaluate talent and manage the cap. That leads to good drafts and using your money wisely on players. From there it's all on your coaching staff.
