View Full Version : Return of "The Blitz"?

So far this season, we've played pretty much straight up defense. Lineman rush, LB's do their thing, DB's cover. Is this the week we see the return of 8 to 9 men on the line? Is this the week we see John Lynch on a rampage again? I know we are trying to establish a solid pass rush that doesn't rely on the heavy blitz and more importantly doesn't leave us vulnerable, but i really think we should send the house against Philip Rivers. Send the house in the first half, then go back to our regular D in the second after they have made adjustments to what we will no longer be doing.
If we are going to do it, i also think we need to press the receivers. Eric Parker is probably the only one of the group that could beat our linebackers in a foot race, not to mention our speedy corners. If we press the receivers it will take away the short route and it will take away the quick screens.
I really wanna see us bring the house right from the get go, and not have to fall back on it when our front four can't get any pressure. I hope Coyer has a good plan.

As long as whatever we do works im happy with it. ;D
Rivers is very accurate and just as any other QB, timing is everything, and we gotta disrupt somehow.

I'd like to see them mix it up. Disguise their blitzes, and when a back is picking up the blitzer I'd like to see the Donks' player do something other than get stopped dead in his tracks.

This is a good point. Not only are the Broncos not blitzing much they are ranked 29th in the league as far as blitzing. They have went the total opposite!
Rivers is an inexperienced QB sending the blitz at him might not be a bad idea. The down fall of that is if Denver blitzes Thomlinson will be wide open in the flat.. That could hurt, but I do like the idea of bring all out blitzes a few times just to see how Rivers handles it.

Okay, I'm gonna be a Bob here and throw out a bunch of stats to talk about Rivers and the blitz. ;) Because Denver blitzed the hell out of Brees over the years and it always worked. Teams who followed Denver's MO, usually fared well also.
The biggest difference between Rivers and Brees is that Rivers already handles the blitz much better than Brees. Brees did have success sometimes but he just wasn't very consistent with it. Because Rivers (6'5") can have a better view of the field compared to Brees (6'0") and has the much quicker release are the reasons IMO because they both have good decision making abilities.
These aren't the most accurate stats because for example 7 men on the LOS does not necessarily mean a blitz but chanes are that it was a blitz and I think this is a pretty good generalization of Rivers' play. It's been very noticable for those who have seen him play.
(These are from ESPN and Brees splits are not available for his Charger years for some reason so I posted his splits for this year. He still shows that he struggles with 6+ men on the LOS.)
Rivers:
Situation CMP ATT YDS CMP% TD INT RAT
<4 on D-Line 5 11 57 45.5 0 1 23.7
4 on D-Line 96 138 943 69.6 2 1 90.3
5 on D-Line 61 91 761 67 3 1 99.2
6 on D-Line 14 22 233 63.6 5 0 138.8
7+ on D-Line 6 12 91 50 3 0 114.9
Brees:
Situation CMP ATT YDS CMP% TD INT RAT
<4 on D-Line 13 24 214 54.2 1 1 80.9
4 on D-Line 140 195 1574 71.8 7 2 103.2
5 on D-Line 51 83 672 61.4 6 3 96.1
6 on D-Line 7 21 61 33.3 0 1 22.5
7+ on D-Line 2 3 14 66.7 0 0 77.1
Denver needs to mix up the looks very well IMO and not be too predictable in what they are doing. That could lead to Rivers making some mistakes.
The thing I worry about is that Rivers has been playing so well, I think he is due for a bad game eventually but hopefully for us, that's not coming this week. :)

Like he is better than Drew Brees? C'mon, dude is in his first year in the NFL. I'm not saying blitz everydown, but definetly bring consistent heat on him and force him to make quick decisions.
Rivers making quick decisions means he will either force balls to the #1 Corner in the history of the NFL imo, or he will be throwing quick passes toward D.W.'s side who we can roll our coverage to, especially if we blitz Lynch, Gold takes the underneath on the D's right side, Darrent takes away deep. Al takes the middle, Nick F stays middle to take away the post, and Champ is isolated as he should be with DJ on Gates.

They said that about Brady too, but Denver blitzed the hell out of him and it worked. When you have good CBs the blitz can be very effective. Denver blitzs and Champ jumps one of those hot routes could be a beautiful thing.

I already promised my buddies I'd hit up Yogi's but I've gotta pay Chiefs a visit one of these days. I've heard the burgers are awesome there.
BTW, what's the story with Chiefs? Obviously, the first thing that pops into everyone's mind is that why is a Bronco bar called "Chiefs" of all names?

As much as I hate to say it about a division rival QB, I think BigBad is right.
I watched Rivers for 4 years at NC State and he has that "it" that only guys like Manning and Brady have. He's a coach/coordinator in a 6'5 QB's body...
I wish Rivers the best except the 2 times a year he plays us!!

I can't wait for this game... I really think we will see alot of blitzing and that gets me tingly inside.. Just as long as we keep tabs on LT and Gates while we are doing it, that's all i ask.
As quick as our linebackers are, i just don't understand why we don't have them at or near the LOS every single snap. Alot of times they'll play 5 yards back, against Indy Al Wilson was almost TEN YARDS AWAY!! Keep 'em up close, that way it won't be obvious when we do bring the blitz.

I already am impressed. He is a stud QB. Should be for years. But I think our blitz package will force him into mistakes tonight.

Told you!
Did Coyer not think Rivers would see a DE on LT?ROFL!
Nice blitz design against the best RB in football.
Looks like the game plan that worked against Brees for the past 3 years is out the window. Stack the line and Rivers will make you pay eventually.

Rivers didn't make anyone pay, LT did. It's not hard to hit someone when they are wide open.

LT beat the broncos tonight, Rivers didn't have his best game and played good enough second half but early on blitz got to him and Denver became too predictable. SD got lucky as hell and come playoff time they will be done spotting teams 17 and 21 pts lets face it.

Our D with all its injuries only gave up 20 points! Remember Rivers gave you 7.
I would take 20 points against us ANY DAY! We will get 25 to 30 every time. Way too many weapons.

I have to agree. 20 points given up by the defense with all those injuries is definitely acceptable.
