At this stage the two most likely contenders for the GOP are Rudy Guiliani and McCain. We all know that McCain is not as far Right as Georgie, and much more flexible when it comes to working with Democrats. His co-sponsorship with many Democrats is a testament to that.

Then I found this quote by Guiliani:

>>"I'm pro-choice. I'm pro-gay rights," Giuliani said. He was then asked whether he supports a ban on what critics call partial-birth abortions. "No, I have not supported that, and I don't see my position on that changing," he responded.>>

So no matter what happens in the election, the political leaning of the oval office will definetly come a bit closer to the middle of the road; even if it doesn't go completely to the Left.

**disclaimer** My statement hinges on McCain or Guiliani getting the Republican nod. So my question to W*GS, Ramey, and/or Tensi is this: Are there any other Repubs out there that may beat them out?

If it goes far left, our country will be in shambles considering what today's left is like. As for likely repub. candidates, my feeling is Guiliani and Romney are the favorites. I don't see McCain as a serious choice and I know I will never vote for McCain for anything. He represents AZ and did nothing about our border situation or ever really addressed it until after the fact. Besides, until democrats start showing they will work with others, doesn't matter who gets the nod from the repubs.

Ah. You go for libertarians or independants?

Lefties and Democrats think I'm a conservative or a Republican because their political "thinking" is strictly one-dimensional. Since I'm not a lefty or a Democrat, I have to be a Republican.

Right?

Libertarians. With the exception of Kerry in 2004 - and that was because I knew Bush was going to win Colorado regardless, and I didn't care much for Badnarik.

I know it's sad, but I have a hard time a Mormon would get a nomination for President. Lots of folks don't trust them.

It is sad because that was the same knock Kennedy had against him and the apocalypse didn't come because he was elected. That being said, I live in the Mormon controlled state. The Mormons preach free agency and tolerance but don't always practice it. But the good Mormons are some of the best people on earth and if you want the economy handled effectively, they are the ones. Also I love their welfare philosophy. You work for what you get.

The weird thing, though, is when I was younger and his father George was running for President, I attended the Mormon church and I remember hearing people saying that Romney would never make it because a Mormon would never be President. I got the impression that it was in a scripture in one of the Mormon's books. I don't know if that's true.

I don't see what the problem is with him being Mormon, but I have heard similar things of it being a problem to many, though again, I don't know why. In AZ, there are tons of Mormons here and I don't see any problems with it. I didn't vote for Badnarik myself since I didn't agree with his stance of basically do nothing about terrorism and hope it goes away.

I won't ever vote for McCain, and Guiliani, well, I don't know. Border enforcement, cuts in domestic spending, keeping the tax rate cuts, and the war are the big issues for me, think I'd lean more towards Romney, no matter what his religion is. I don't think conservatives really care about your religion just so long as you are a conservative. Thats what I hope anyway.

I have a very hard time believing that the Evangelical base will allow socially moderate to liberal Republicans like Guiliani or Pataki to even get a sniff of the nomination.....I expect them to go all out to eliminate the last remaining "Yankee Republicans" rather than elevate them to greater power.

I would be extremely shocked if either Guiliani or Pataki made it to the halfway point......shocked I say!

It really is a shame what happened to George Romney. He might have known more about how to manage the economy than any presidential candidate in history and he was an extremely honest man. So when he said he was "brainwashed" about Vietnam, he was dumped, Nixon was elected and we have had 40 years of inept administrations.

McCain has a waaaay better chance @ a repub ticket than Guiliani. I don't think a guy who marries his cousin and was reputed as a habitual adulterer bodes well as an ideal canidate for the "party of values"

Guliani will never get out the nomination process alive, IMO. His leadership after 9/11, while admirable, won't be enough to capture the nomination.
