He's a cute little guy that's for sure! I wonder if we can clone War Admiral, Seabiscuit, Secretariart, Man o War, Ruffian, John Henry, Affirmed and Citation and have the race of all-time champions?

AUSTIN, Texas - Barrel racer Charmayne James knew scientists had figured out how to clone mice, sheep and cats. But if any creature deserved to be cloned, she thought it was her gelding Scamper, the retired 10-time world champion. The result, Clayton, has exceeded James' expectations. The foal even bristles, just like Scamper, when touched on a certain spot behind his ear.

"Scamper was one of the greatest horses ever, and I know that now more than ever," James said. "I wanted to get in and save his genetics, because if they were ever able to clone a horse, Scamper would be the horse to clone."

James paid an Austin-based ViaGen Inc. $150,000 to clone Scamper. After four failed attempts, Clayton was born Aug. 8. His birth had been kept secret until Wednesday.

Genetic material was extracted from a cell sample taken from Scamper, then transferred to an egg that had its own genetic material removed. An embryo was grown in an incubator before it was transferred to a mare.

The foal is almost identical to the older model, except for white markings between Clayton's eyes.

"He looks so much like Scamper, when I walked into the stall and looked at him, the hair on the back of my neck stood up," James said.

Scamper won a record 10 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world championships from 1984 to '93 and helped make James the first million-dollar cowgirl and the all-time leading money winner in barrel racing. Scamper is the only barrel racing horse in the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame.

James, who lives in Athens, Texas, plans to breed Clayton to help "get better, sounder quality barrel horses out there." For now, she has no plans to race Clayton, saying he's to valuable to risk getting hurt.

The PRCA has no limits on using cloned horses in competition, but Clayton wouldn't be allowed in any events sponsored by the American Quarter Horse Association, which does not register horses that are cloned or their offspring.

The first cloned horse was born in 2003 in Italy. In 2005 Texas A&M University created the first cloned horse in the United States. Earlier this year, ViaGen announced it had cloned two top-earning cutting horses in Oklahoma.

Wow... amazing how fast this technology has advanced. Just awesome. I wonder if people even realize the amazing options and choices our childen will have in front of them.

That's amazing stuff! It'll be interesting following this story as he grows.

Does anyone ever wonder if the government hasn't already begun cloning humans?

Some CIA looking guy came by the house and asked for soem of my DNA. I told him to take a hike. He caught me at a bad time I was Masturbating to Days of Our Lives.... Deidra Hall was getting ready to do a love scene!!

Now that's bad timing. There's love scenes in Days of Our Lives? I thought it was a Soap Opera.

Well there are two problems:

1) Cloning animals has proven to be an inexact science. Many clones are born with genetic defects. It's possible that this animal will develop problems down the line like Dolly the Sheep.

2) All organisms develop as a result of gene-environment interaction. There is no guarantee that this foal will grow to be as competetive as it's gene donor.

But certainly in the coming decades this science will only become more refined and sophisticated.

Let's start cloning more useful beings.

Say, Hollywood hotties.

Imagine the benefits of knowing the genetic eventuality of this horse... a training regime and environment could be specifically engineered for this animal. Sure there are going to be mis-steps along the way but the end result will be revolutionary in the future. I realize this is the stuff of Sci-Fi movies but the possibilities of this science are absolutely mind-numbing

Science will never catch up to our imagination... But this just made the race alot closer

Beg to differ in some ways dave.... new applications of quantum & nano sciences are making the thought, a reality.

I my opinion our imagination is what leads us down these paths. Our ability to think up the fantastic will always out pace our ability to create the fantastic.

What i think honestly dave, is that it will get to the point that you think it, it will happen.

What i think honestly dave, is that it will get to the point that you think it, it will happen.Well, we'll never know if that happens or not unless reincarnation is it and one day in 2925, Mary Ramey as a dung beetle, walking down a game trail comes across some bird droppings and using her power of imagination is suddenly immersed in a pile of steaming elephant sh*t.

If you use the model that technology doubles - and we have smart nano apps now (I read they are making robots that can go in the human body to fight cancer cells) - then - i'd say that in the next 20years it could be possible to have that food machine on star trek

I agree our minds will always be ahead of science. In fact my cousin Leroy says that one day we might land one of them Rocketships on the moon!! HAHAHAHA The imagination of some!!!

Ah crap...If we get to clone humans every team will have clones of their greatest players playing...

AfC West would have Len Dawson, Ken Stabler ( OR maybe Plunkett), John Elway and Dan Fouts all playing at the same time.

Imagine if they can get the clone grown to maturity in a few weeks.

All those Fantasy games could really happen.. The 85 Bears could really play the 98 Broncos. We just need to get samples (dig em up if you have to...as the tech gets cheaper the speed it can be done might increase too).

Of course we'll have to engineer em to wear out fast...can't have TOO many players arround now.
