Colts Peaking At Right Time Again
INDIANAPOLIS--After edging the Bills on Sunday 17-16, the Indianapolis Colts are once again peaking at the right time: the middle of the regular season. The Colts are the last remaining undefeated team in the NFL, just like they were last year at this time, when they finished 14-2 and lost in the first round of the playoffs.
“Once again, we are hitting out stride at the best possible time,” said quarterback Peyton Manning. “We had a little squeaker today against the Bills, but that’s okay because we just keep winning. They don’t have to be pretty. We had control of this game from the first quarter on. You know why? Because it’s November, and that’s Colts time.
“When the leaves change colors and there’s a chill in the air and everybody’s getting ready for Thanksgiving, we’re unbeatable. Right around mid-January, when the leaves are gone and everybody’s getting ready for President ’s Day, we’re wondering why we didn’t shore up our run defense when we had a chance.”
Manning and the Colts have won three straight division titles and are cruising toward their fourth. Huge road victories over the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots have cemented their reputation as kings of the regular season.
“We’ve met every challenge the first half of this season and won every game,” said receiver Reggie Wayne. “And just to show we weren’t soft, we went into Denver and Foxboro and kicked their asses all over the place. Of course, the season’s not over yet, but it’s good to know that we’re 9-0 anyway. Last year we got to 13-0. I'll always remember that, because it was the highlight of the season.”
The only weakness for the Colts, if you could call it that, is their rushing defense. The Colts are currently allowing 165 yards per game on the ground, good for last in the NFL. The defense, however, says that statistic is misleading.
“That’s a big number, but I still think we’re pretty good at stopping the run,” said defensive end Dwight Freeney. “It’s just that sometimes we’re caught in the wrong formation or we let up big plays. It doesn’t matter anyway, because we have Peyton Manning to compensate for us. Whenever we need a big play, he gives us one…during the regular season. In the playoffs we have to fend for ourselves, which isn’t always pretty. They say good defense wins in the playoffs and, um, well, that’s kind of why we’re a great regular season team.”
Even though they’ve been undefeated deep into the past two seasons, the Colts have avoided any discussion of going 16-0. That’s because their mission is to win a Super Bowl, not set regular season records.
Could this be the year for the Colts to finally win it all?
“I think this could definitely be the year for them,” said one AFC scout. “They seem to have really turned a corner. I don’t think there’s anybody in the league that can stop that offense. Plus, Manning’s gotten over the whole Bill Belichick thing and the Steelers shouldn’t be a problem anymore. This is it. This is the year. They’re for real. Unless they lose, in which case I’ll be telling you they were paper tigers all along.”
Next week the Colts travel to Dallas for what should be another serious test. The Cowboys have a stellar defense and a strong running game that would give the Colts troubles if this was the postseason. It’s not, though, so the Colts aren't intimidated.
“The Cowboys are a good team, one of the best we’ve faced all season,” said Manning. “Pretty stout defense they have there. Robust, even. They’re tough at home, too. That being said, I would still bet on us. See, we don’t lose in the regular season. Very rarely anyway. Only twice since the beginning of 2005. We’ve taken all comers, too. So if you’re betting on the game, take the Colts – and the over. We can’t stop anybody.”
