Israel official: Strike on Iran possible

JERUSALEM - The deputy defense minister suggested Friday thatIsrael might be forced to launch a military strike against Iran's disputed nuclear program — the clearest statement yet of such a possibility from a high-ranking official.

"I am not advocating an Israeli pre-emptive military action against Iran and I am aware of its possible repercussions," Deputy Defense Minister Ephraim Sneh, a former general, said in comments published Friday in The Jerusalem Post. "I consider it a last resort. But even the last resort is sometimes the only resort."

Sneh's comments did not necessarily reflect the view of Israel's government or of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, said government spokeswoman Miri Eisin.

Olmert, who was arriving in Washington on Sunday, said he was confident in the U.S. handling of the international standoff over Iran's nuclear program. The Bush administration and other nations say is a cover for developing atomic weapons, but Tehran says the program is peaceful.

"I have enormous respect for
President Bush. He is absolutely committed," Olmert said in an interview on NBC's "Today" show. "I know that America will not allow Iran to possess nuclear weapons because this is a danger to the whole Western world."

You need to take a closer look at the Democratic heavy hitters. Pelosi. Hillary. Obama. And many others. We are not out of the woods by a long stretch.

All of the above are on record in support of Israel's agenda about Iran -- which means attack first -- let the world pick up the pieces later.

This despite the fact -- there is absolutely no evidence that Iran has a nuclear weapons program. But facts in and of themselves do not mean that saner heads will prevail.

We -- and by this I mean the human experiment on this planet -- are walking a razor thin edge. A war against Iran will take us down into a morass of hatred, bloodshed, will open a nuclear pandora, etc. And it just gets worse from there.

For once I agree with Beerslugger. Check out the latest from Ha'aretz -- about the Israeli security chief rattling sabres -- chaffing at the bit to start WW III. If this doesn't wake you up - nothing can penetrate the clouds.

People need to figure another way around this nuclear issue... Let's face it, it's 1940's technology that is going to become easier and easier to obtain/create. I realize that everyone thinks that the other side is always crazy, but there are some safeguards that come along with the theory of mutually assured destruction.

Some little $hithole country puts together the equivalent of a dirty bomb (or mini-nuke for our crazier friends here) and proceeds to blow up a building or two they have effectively hit the reset button on their civilization. While they may have a bomb or two, we already have the technology and ability to turn large portions of the world to glass.... coming after us with a nuke also gives us the desire. Think it through. A pure fusion weapon is not even covered by the nonproliferaton treaty -- since there is none of the specified fissile material.

Did you read the letter from Hans Bethe to Clinton on the mini nuke thread? Bethe received the Nobel Prize for physics in 1967 for unraveling the dynamics of solar fusion. I think he knew of what he wrote. He was one of the last of the physicists from the Manhattan Proect. And in his older years he was strongly against further R&D. His position was that the US should sign the comprehensive test ban. This ban on testing would leave the US in a position of permanent advantage -- since without testing no country could achieve new breakthroughs and become a threat. Clinton supported the Comp test ban.

But the Republican Senate killed it -- and the R&D on pure fusion continued. If it's been achieved it's only a matter of time before the weapons are used and the technology spreads world wide. (Indeed, my question is -- have they already been used?)

These are imminently usable weapons --from a military standpoint. Almost no fallout. Scalable to any size. No matter how small. Hence, suited for battlefield use. Also, easy to make and handle -- since there's none of the usual problems associated with radioactivity.

If the US gets backed into a corner militarily -- in the Gulf, for example, if an atack on Iran goes south -- Bush will use nukes.

If this happens -- Rittter is quite correct -- the genie won't go back in the bottle until at least one American city gets nuked. Take your pick. New York? Miami? Seattle?

You missed the point. There has only been one nuclear attack in history. Why? Because of MAD (mutually assured destruction) no one is going to be dumb enough to open Pandora's box. u can only have population control if u can control immigration. and no country in the west has very impressive birthrates, america is like the behemoth of baby making in the west and we're at like 2.1. a lot of western countries are in absolute freefall. russia, greece, spain, italy, japan I believe are all around 1.3.
