I know it's a dumb thread, but he's just used that body up.
We are going to have almost half our starters and top reserves out or injured this week.
This year, Rod finally obviously lost a step, he's had a couple more concussions, and now has a bad shoulder.
I hate to even say it, but he's got a huge cap number. I don't think rolling it into a signing bonus is the right move. He's too long in the tooth for that at this point.
It brings me to near tears, but I believe it's more than Javon taking over the lead here. I have said it for a few years that Rod isn't slowing down...this year the inevitable has happened. Noone is a bigger fan of Rod, and he might be worth keeping for another year just for the locker room presence...but it's more than just Walker and injury...he's just plain looked a bit sluggish.
It would be like putting down Ole' Yeller honestly...Ya know...this makes me even more incredibly angry at Ms. Lilly. That moron couldn't see this coming?...Rod isn't a 7 million dollar WR anymore...ugg...
I simply can't see paying him that much however. That's for the offseason I guess. I have said many times it's all meat, but Rod Smith is kinda different.
"Waits for the rotten tomatoes to fly at the mock..."
Some idiot cut the fiber optic in some podunk town near here and I was without any service for 24 hours yesterday, so I just got on, both cable and TV.
Question:
Do we pay Rod Smith his 7? million next year?

He needs human growth hormone, all the athletes seem to take given that a reputable test has yet to be discovered.

I say no as well Mock. There comes a time when guys need to hang em up, and after a brilliant career, Rod will see the writing on the wall and retire. Ring of honor next year will be a fitting goodbye to a legendary Bronco.

He has slowed down this year, but the guy is still a great "possession" reciever who can be counted on to get crucial short-yardage catches tough YAC. A great # 2 or # 3 option, but... 7 million? Not sure. Depends on how well he holds up the rest of the season and how healthy is going into next year.

How about Jay Cutler’s body?

That's just a freak show.
Jay is plenty big...this guy couldn't run a 10 yard dash under 4 seconds. It would be like watching King Kong.

Not sure because I have never seen what he looks like but I think that is the body builder Jay Cutler. Although our Jay did out bench 1/3 O&DL at the combine.

To answer Mocks question, IMO Rod has more than earned the entire contract he currently has, if only there was some way to rework it so it doesn't hit the cap as hard.......

I think the guy needs to retire after this year. He is simply getting too banged up. Doesn't he have 2 concussions already this year? Add that to the separated shoulder and you got a situation you hate to see.

I'm sure something could be worked out. I'm sure the conversation will be something like this:
Shanny: Hey Rod, We love you man and we want to keep you around, but we need some of the cap to improve the team's pass rush.
Rod: Whatever the TEAM needs.
Shanny: I figured you'd say that. Mr. Bowlen would like to see you in his office.
Rod: You got it.
20 minutes later.
Mr. Bowlen: Hey Rod, I have a business proposal for you. You've been an outstanding and unshelfish team player for this orgranization. As a thank you for being such a great leader, I would like to bring you in as a coach once you decide to hang up your uniform. Mike told me about you having no problems restructuring your contract. Since we aren't able to give you the money you've earned without taking a cap hit. I'll double whatever paycut you take for the team as a player and add it to you coaching pay if you decide to be a coach for us.
Rod: Deal!
Mr. Bowlen: Deal!
(Rod and Mr. Bowlen shakes hands and Rod exists the room)
Mid-February 2009
Rod Smith retires.
Late-February 2009
Rod Smith hired as WR coach for Denver Broncos and signs a record breaking WR coach deal. Makes as much money has most OCs/DCs.

For some reason I have a reason once Rod retires he will be done with football for a lonnnngg while.

I think he will play at least one more seaon, but will probably restructure, as will a couple of others. There have been several articles in the paper over the years about how Rod lives under the radar and saves/invests his money. Unless he has moved in the last year or two, he lives in a very average house in a nice "Leave It To Beaver" neighborhood. I'm not sure he has the patience to be a baby sitter with pro athletes, but I can see him toying with coaching at the high school level.

I think Rod could make his greatest impact on high school kids. I hope he coaches for the Broncos, but if he chose high school coaching I wouldn't
b!tch. Just image the lack of Flava Clowns coming from whatever school he taught.
Hell, if he became a high school coach I'd tell my wife to start popping out the kids and that we are moving so he could coach them.
 that he stays with the Broncos though.

As sad as it is, Rod's days are numbered in the NFL. I would absolutely love for him to re-work his deal and comeback as a #3 WR for us next year.
His locker room prescence and mentoring the younger WR's would be invaluable.
I also like the idea of Rod coming back as a WR coach for us.
It's too bad we are having to discuss this topic, however. Rod is one of the all-time great Broncos.

I'm sorry, but I don't think restructuring is the answer if it involves moving money into a signing bonus.
That doesn't do anything really. He would be more than happy to move salary to guaranteed money.
Then you think about his catch last week which was one of the top 10 of the year in the back of the end zone.
That was a money money money catch...I just remembered that catch...I imagine we can keep Old Yeller around for another year. I would like to see a slight cut in salary, but it's like stealing money from Grandapa's cookie jar at this point.
Trust me, Rod has a reputation for being quite frugal. He built his mansion, but that isn't a bad investment in Denver. I doubt he has a giant fish tank over his bed like CP.
I guess the point is that he's finally lost a step or two. You can't say that fantastic catch that he was actually open...he just took that ball.

Just watch, the last few games have been all Javon so he's going to start drawing a regular double-team leaving Rod in one-on-one. He's got a couple of big games coming I just know it. That Blackjack Pizza will kick in over the second half and he'll be a force!

The funny thing is when they talk about "ripped abs". They aren't even symetrical. More like rumble strips or God knows what. That wasn't the work of God.
I wouldn't mind the clown but every time I search for Jay Cutler I find this steroid freak.

It's really kind of disturbing to view his pic. Homo-erotic? These nutjobs always remind me of the elephant man. Only they do it to themselves.

His legs look like they have hanging John Honlmes Dicks hanging on them.
I'm tired...I have to go thru paperwork and I was up late waiting for the internet to come back..
That make's a funny story of customer support stpidity.
Ican't tell you what I told her. Simply clueless.

I't just busness...
You want Rod's gold Rolex after he's taken out?"
I have kinda changed my mind. I just want some wiggle space....
I have changed my mind for next year...I he can go to around 3 million in cap I say let's roll...

I will never be sad about Rod retiring and hanging them up. I refuse to. This guy has had a wonderful career and is hands down, the best all time undrafted WR.
This guy has been Mr. Bronco for the past decade IMO and epitomized the kind of player that we had when we were back to back champs.
He deserves our cheers, not regrets and sadness.

No regrets.
I think he's going to go down fighting but he just has to take a pay cut IMO.

I know records are something he cares little about but if he plays another year and grabs 100 or so passes, during the rest of this season and next, he'll move ahead of Art Monk and be number 6 all-time behind the likes of Rice, Cris Carter, Tim Brown, Marvin Harrison and Andre Reed. I know he doesn't care, but it could make him a lock on the Hall of Fame . . .

He's an athlete competing in his chosen sport. I don't really understand it, but I don't understand most of the hobbies people pursue.
My only beef with the guy is his existence makes Googling the wunderkind more challenging.

Next year I would love to see Marshall developed as a Number 2, Javon obviously being the top dog, with the great Rod Smith running in the slot and sitting in zones with that great catch and run instinct, as our number 3.
If Rod could accept that role and take a reduced salary of $2 Million per, catch 25-30 balls, and convert 15-18 3rd downs to first downs, I'd be thrilled.
He clearly has declined this year; he just does not seperate on some of his routes like he used to and his cuts do not seem to be as quick or efficient.
