here are the important awards:

Best Defensive player -- Champ Bailey, Broncos, cornerback: Confession time. I've never bought the notion that Bailey deserves the "shutdown corner'' label that he has worn for most of his eight-year career -- until now. If there's a defender who impacts his opponent's approach more than Bailey this season, I haven't seen it. He really does take away his half of the field, and with five interceptions (all in the past five games), he's making big plays when he gets his rare opportunities.

Best deal for a disgruntled receiver -- There were plenty of them, disgruntled receivers on the move, that is. But the acquisition that has worked out the best for everyone involved has been Javon Walker's relocation to Denver, not Terrell Owens becoming a Cowboy. Walker has 39 catches for 669 yards and five touchdowns, with another score coming on a 72-yard run. His stretch-the-field presence has been a major factor in the Broncos' 6-2, first-place showing.

Best Coordinator -- I don't think I could pick Larry Coyer out of a police lineup, but the Denver defensive coordinator had his Broncos giving up 7.3 points per game through six games. Denver was the first team in 70 years or so to give up just one touchdown through its first five games.

Best Head scratcher -- Raiders new/old head coach Art Shell hired Tom Walsh as his offensive coordinator, despite Walsh being out of football the past eight years. Alas, the erstwhile bed and breakfast owner hasn't exactly emerged as the next Bill Walsh in the bay area. The Raiders offense has generated six touchdown drives in 94 possessions this season.Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious!
