I just curious how others outside of Texas veiw McCoy and the season he is having. Today on the radio they have been asking the question if McCoy is a Heisman candidate. Apparently, there has also been some talk outside of Texas and he has been added to some Heisman watch lists.
SI currently has him #9

He is on CBS sportsline watch list with one guy having him #2

I think he is having a great season but this talk has caught me by suprise. I guess you could make a case for him. He is the Quarterback of the #4 team in the country and if you compare his #'s to Quinn and T. Smith he is right there with them.
Brady Quinn:

Troy Smith:

Colt McCoy:

Not this year. Hype started too late and he wasn't impressive in the big TV game vs. O$U.
Troy Smith is a dead solid lock. Brady Meier wouldn't even be in it if he did not play for ND.

I agree it is Troy Smith's. I'm not so much trying to make a case for him as I am just suprised that he is even mentioned. I guess the year he is having has just snuck up on me. He will most likley finish the season with the record for TD's in a season at TEXAS and he's a freshman!
How about this is he first team All-Big XII ? Even that would be a huge acomplishment for a freshman QB.

every other year a frosh comes along from a "BIG" school. Heisman talk starts but freshman NEVER WIN. I remember the same talk about Chad Henne, Maurice Clarett, although sometimes worthy they wont ever win.

I agree. There is a bias against freshmen.
All Smith has to do is beat Michigan and it is a certainty. There really isn't a second place which is why the media is trying to invent one. McCoy's numbers aren't jaw-dropping but then neither is Smith's. Head-to-head, we know which one won.
The interesting thing is that Texas has (at least as of summer) a commitment from a QB in Florida who sounds like the next Manning. His name is Brantley. They say he is already running a pro *playbook* (not just a pro-style offense but Lindy Infante's entire NFL playbook). His Daddy and brother are former Gators and there is more than a little unhappiness that he won't be going to Gainesville.
It's very possible that Texas could have the same sort of QB controversy in another year or two that they had with Chris Simms and Major Applewhite where the less heralded (McCoy) lacks some of the physical tools of the other but somehow gets more out of them.

Would be pretty tough for him to go to FL with Trebow there. Trebow will be in the Heisman hunt next year as a sophamore.

Apperently Javon Sneed (colt's backl-up) has already put out feelers and may be looking to transfer. I've heard that Brantley's parents and Brantley want him to red shirt for a year so really he would still have two years after Colt left to play at Texas.

Herc/BroncoBuff - are you making calls to Austin yet?

That and QBs who run the spread offense have had trouble adjusting to the next level. While Greg Davis gets considerable heat for his playcalling in Austin, it seems the Longhorns are not married to an offensive system, rather looking for one that matches the talent they've brought in. They didn't ask Vince Young to be Chris Simms nor did they ask Simms to be James Brown.
