Tackle Veal extends deal through 2008

The Broncos locked up one of their key, young defensive players by extending the contract of defensive tackle Demetrin Veal.

Veal, who has taken over for injured defensive tackle Gerard Warren the past two weeks, is committed to the Broncos through 2008 after signing the two-year extension. Veal was scheduled to be a restricted free agent in the offseason and an unrestricted free agent in 2008. Had not Veal extended his contract, teams could have signed him this spring, but the Broncos could have matched other offers.

Both sides decided to get the deal done now.

"It's a good deal for both sides," said Veal's agent, Al Irby. "Demetrin loves it there and loves being a part of things there."

Irby declined to disclose the terms of the contract. Veal, 25, was signed off the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad in December 2004. He became a key reserve last season, and is Denver's third defensive tackle. Veal started against Indianapolis on Sunday and spelled Warren after he was injured in Cleveland last week.

QB controversy

Once again, the Broncos are going into a game in which one of the most intriguing subplots is a quarterback controversy. Only this time, the discussion is not whether Broncos rookie Jay Cutler should replace Jake Plummer. That debate was reduced to a whisper by Plummer's fine performance Sunday in a 34-31 loss to Indianapolis.

"By the way, Jake is our quarterback this week," Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said to a question that wasn't asked during his news conference.

Instead, the controversy is in Pittsburgh, where incumbent Ben Roethlisberger has played poorly whenever he returns from one of his various injuries and veteran Charlie Batch has played extremely well in two meaningful appearances.

Roethlisberger has a 70.7 quarterback rating; Batch's is 136.8.

"Nothing against Ben - he's a Super Bowl quarterback," Broncos defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban said. "But you know what? The tape doesn't lie. I'd rather face Ben than Charlie Batch just because how their offense has been doing with Charlie Batch in there."

Anyone who has dropped into a Steelers Web log knows Ekuban isn't the only one.

Second-guessing

After the Broncos' defense surrendered 28 points in the second half to the great Peyton Manning, a natural follow-up question was whether any tactical adjustments could have been made.

Part of the problem was the Broncos had allowed only six points entering halftime, the usual period for significant alterations. So at a crucial time, the Broncos were lulled into thinking there was nothing to fix.

But after Manning warmed into an unstoppable groove in the second half, hindsight came up with two possible solutions. One was to aid the front four by bringing a fifth, blitzing player into the pass rush.

"The coaches make calls, the players execute," Ekuban said. "We didn't do a good job of executing the plays to the best of our ability. I never blame coaches."

The other was to have the Broncos' defensive backs move up on the receivers instead of starting 5 yards off.

"Nah, we're fine," Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey said. "By playing 5 yards off, we take away a lot of routes. People are going to start picking you apart, but you've got to remember, we were playing Peyton Manning."

Post reporters Jim Armstrong, Mike Klis and Bill Williamson post daily entries on this blog devoted to your beloved Broncos. Visit it here.
Shanahan said he wouldn't know whether Warren (sprained big toe) would be ready to play against Pittsburgh until observing practice Wednesday. ... Bailey said his bruised right leg that had him limping late in the game against the Colts had healed significantly overnight.

EYE ON ... The Steelers
DENVER AT PITTSBURGH, 2:15 p.m., Sunday

For the record: After winning the Super Bowl last season, the Steelers have lost five of six and are 2-5, tied with Cleveland for last place in the AFC North.

Last game: The Steelers lost 20-13 at Oakland on Sunday as Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger threw four interceptions, two that were returned for touchdowns.

Streaking: After going 26-6 the previous two seasons, the Steelers are in danger of joining the 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers and 1998 Broncos as recent Super Bowl champions who suffered losing seasons the following year.

Who's hot: Super Bowl MVP Hines Ward has overcome a slow start by producing 21 catches for 311 yards and four touchdowns in his past three games.

Who's not: How much do the Steelers miss Jerome Bettis? Against the Raiders, running back Willie Parker had 11 carries of 1 yard or less. Roethlisberger has only six TD passes, against a league-high 11 interceptions.

Key stat: The Steelers' stumble at Oakland was only the second game since the NFL relaxed its holding rules in 1978 that a team lost despite giving up fewer than 100 yards in total offense. The Raiders had only 98 yards. The other time it happened was in 2002, when the Steelers lost 24-6 to the Houston Texans.

FYI: Steelers outside linebackers Joey Porter and Clark Haggans started at defensive end for Colorado State. Porter returned to the lineup against Oakland after missing the previous two games because of a hamstring injury. Haggans and Porter each had two sacks Sunday and lead the Steelers with five and four sacks, respectively.

Injury report: Third-down back Verron Hayes and linebacker Arnold Harrison suffered season-ending knee injuries against the Raiders. Center Jeff Hartings also suffered a knee injury and is likely out against the Broncos. Nose tackle Casey Hampton (hamstring) missed the Oakland game.

Line: Steelers by 2 1/2 points.

Playerspeak: "I can't tell you why he threw certain balls. You'll have to ask Ben that." - Ward, on Roethlisberger's four interceptions against Oakland

I think it would be hard not to go with Batch. The guy does some good things.

Great news on Veal. He's a solid rotation guy. Not "the answer," but worth extending. Nice move.

Hope they work out something with Shorty soon, too.

Veal's a solid depth guy. Nice to know he'll be around a while.

You have to admire kids that come thru the practice squads and simply appreciate seeing the field. Keep at it Sundy, there are more players we need to get locked up. Players like Mike Bell and my beloved Son Cecil. I wouldn't mind trying to lock up D.J. either before he gets ants in his pants pining to go back to Will and get a 60 million contract somewhere.

and what about Jake...isn't it obvious he's earned an extention after yesterdays heroic effort? It's a shame Jake saved his best game in a loss. I wouldn't mind keeping him around another year honestly, but we can use the cap room and if we fall in the dumpster and can't get out, Rocket Man is likely to be sooner than later. Anyway, that's probably more appropriate on the other 13 million threads. Despite a forced fumble, Jake had a very good, not great, game. The only reason I bring him up is he will have a kinda big cap number in the back end of his contract. I think freeing that money up might be the right move into the future. Others may not agree, but I think majority rule here applies, since we make the decisions at Dove Valley.

Back to the meat of my contention...

What I'm saying is that we have a very poor record for matching contract offers on restricted free agents, for good reason. IMO, Denver doesn't underpay or overpay players. Gold's contract looks in line, and Champ...All you can say is poor DWill...Champ is a top 10 player in the NFL.

I'm not the cap meister, Herc sits on that throne, but I have worked hard decifering the hyroglyphics of the Cap Monster. It's not easy when the NFLPA gives you salary only, instead of logically stating cap number, remaining signing bonus, and future salary.

Other sites give salaries that give the entire SB as salary. It's no wonder trying to figure it out is like reading Martian...Hell, I can even understand Klingon cause there's a dictionary. Heh.. Maybe there is a use for Bob yet.

Players have reasons to want to play here. I don't blame Droughns for taking the money...but didn't we get a good draft choice out of him or something? A castoff, he ran strong on us two weeks ago. If Jake can get it together, we might actually get something for him next year.

Overall, we don't have a ton of free agents coming up. Cecil, Cox, D.J., M. Bell come to mind...there are others probably. Three of those should be easy, I'm not sure about D.J.

I doubt he got a cap buster Kaylore. We need help up and down that DL and Veal is adequate stopping the run. With Warren likely to need surgury and CB's career in doubt and Elvis too small for the building, we have to have depth. You have to fill out a roster if your going to pay impact players the big bucks. We might of had to pay double if he hit the market. Veal is a depth signing, nothing more at this point. Who knows, they might have seen starter in him recently.

WE NEED ENDS THAT CAN GET TO THAT DAMN PUMPKIN HEAD MANNING!

I draft/sign at least 4 DE's and find a couple that can rattle his Pumpkin. They are few and far between. We wanted Freeney but he got stolen from us. So was Boller, thank God, I wanted him...

Are you sure about D.J. ? Please tell me you're not saying his contract is up this year.....

He was our 1st rounder in '04......and wouldn't we have signed him to at least a 5 year deal ? I would think he's got at least 2 more years left.....

Ekuban needs to shut his freaking pie hole. Didn't you learn anything from Darrent Williams and his flapping gums last week? Or did he forget what Roethlisberger did to the Broncos last January?

I love Veal and we now have a productive young rotational player wrapped up for a few more years... he has been getting better and better each season.

Veal is pretty mediocre in my opinion. He's basically a tick better than someone like Fatafahi was.

Yes, it's a 5 year deal, but I don't want to even let him see the escape hatch. He's being the good soldier but I know damn well he wants to go back to Will.

I don't want to have to go LB shopping just as he's hitting his prime years. We need a franchise DE or two.

Why not? I certainly wouldn't resign DJ based on the level of play so far if he wants a major big money deal. He's a decent defender but he hasn't developed into a better pass rusher/blitzer, or made big plays etc.

The draft these days is FULL of stud LB talent that is available in the 2nd round as well and it's not like we can't draft LBers anyway.

I'd save the money, and spend it on Tommie Harris who would fit our D instead!

Fatty was a decent role player on a sub par line. Veal's re-signing would be a side note if we didn't see Manning grow toe nails, clip them, file, do his toe cuticles, put on polish and take a power nap before Wayne cleared coverage. It was painful to watch.

The cap dictates you have different tier level players. Altho I'm a rather lazy analyist (that's what I DO), I think he fills out the roster. The guy probably got a pretty small signing bonus. I could be wrong. I have stopped being shocked with contracts. I'm just numb that A-Road Kill can get 250 million and bat like Joe Neikro (RIP) in the playoffs.

The Neikros threw more garbage and did everything possible to doctor the ball. Their fastballs couldn't break 80. I don't know why I wondered into this turf, but I'm always amused by the Neikro Gang. Take it for what it's worth, not much. Cyber ink. Maybe it was a tiny tribute to Joe.

I second that. Also need to upgrade the offense line.

Right one.

Especially the offensive tackle position.

I've always liked Veal and I'm glad we at least extended his contract. Hopfeully this doesn't mean the end of it. I wonder if this means they'll take him over Myers in the future then and let him walk in Free Agency? Maybe, at least that'd give them an excuse to draft somebody good.

I feel after Sunday's abysmal performance, that Shanahan maybe got a clue and realized patch-work defensive lines don't help win championships. Lucky for us, this Senior DE class is nice, and the DT class is getting stronger day by day.

I agree that OT should be addressed too. Lucky for us again, there are about 4-6 guys who would fit our system beautifully who are first-day selections, and we have four first-day picks. . .
