Not sure if anyone saw today, but Phil Simms was talking on the pre-game show today with JB. Phil mentioned that Shanny will not be afraid to pull the plug, and insert Cutler if Jake struggles early in the game. He mentioned if he were Plummer, and a young Dan Marino was on the roster, he would be really nervous. High Praise from Simms who I have a lot of respect for.
Go Broncos! I know if we see Cutler today, it will probably mean bad things, but if Jake isn't up to the job, get the rook in, to show his skills off.

"Phil Simms compares Cutler to Marino"
Because of PayMeATon, I'm used to hearing comparisons to Marino as an insult...I had to think about that for a second. :)

Oh, yeah, God forbid this kid should be able to throw the football like Dan Marino. That would really suck alright.
Are we setting our expectations high enough?

I like Simms too. Steve Young is by far the best and my favorite analyst. Cutler reminds me of Carson Palmer, just more athletic.

Well, if Jay turns out to play like Marino hopefully we will have no problem getting him a couple of rings in the process.

I think his throwing is Marino-like. I remember little from the early and mid 80's so I can't recall exactly what Marino's mobility was like early in his career... but I think Cutler is a lot more mobile than Dan. Everybody hangs the Noringo moniker on him, but it certainly wasn't b/c he wasn't carrying his load. Marino is a top 10 all time QB. If we get that from Cutler I'm not sure you could ask for more!

As an experiment, I thought about starting a thread that said something to the effect of, "Phill Simms says Champ Bailey is overrated!" I thought it would be fun to see some of the comments it'd get.
"Phil Simms is and always has been a fool!"
"What do you expect from a guy whose son tattoos his buddy's initials on his leg?"
"Simms is a tool!"

It would really help us if he was as quick a study as Dan was.
Nobody has come anywhere close to stepping in and playing at an extremely high level right away. 20 TDs and only six interceptions as a rookie. An NFL record 48 TDs and 17 interceptions in year two as he leads his team to the Super Bowl. The guy was amazing. You couldn't sack him, either.

HE DID NOT COMPARE CUTLER TO MARINO AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are taking it way out of context.
He used Marino as an example of a young talented QB he could have said a young Elway , (FILL IN WITH ANY GREAT QB).
Pretty much a highly touted #1 pick wating in the wings behind the incumbent.
He mentioned Marino since he was reporting to them(The CBS crew).
But he did not compare him as Cutler is like a young Marino or plays like one or reminds of context.

Well to me he was making a comparison, no matter how you saw it is irrelevant, Jay is being compared to a young stud with enormous talent.

Look at the Marino numbers -Slap- hung. Marino averaged just over 5 yards per SEASON for a whopping total of 87 rushing yards for his career. All his gifts were above the waist, apparently.

Marino never got sacked much because he had such a quick release. He would see the reciever...boom ...ball is gone! (do that BOOM in all caps and it's a John Madden impression!). No one would say he was a threat to run the ball, though. He could throw it away with the best of them.
Cutler has a very quick release....but he can run quite well too. It will be interesting to see how our offense does with him in the backfield.
If we don't go far in the playoffs this year because of a defensive collapse we might see Jake for one more year..along with a new defensive line.

I really like Phil Simms as a commentator (hate him as a QB though.. damn Giants), and although comments like these are dime-a-dozen, I think it means a teenie bit more coming from him than most of the idiots out there feeding us opinon.

Marino is a Top 3 QB, period. People talk about the no ring thing but he was kind of like Elway in that he carried his teams for the most part during his career. Never had a running game, receivers...eh, Duper and Clayton were good but other than that??? Despite this he is #1 in pretty much every single meaningful statistical category for QB's in NFL history.
I think he was comparing Cutler to Marino with regard to their quick release ability. What I've heard several former QB analysts say (and the vast majority of them think Cutler is the best of the Big 3) is that his release is the quickest they've seen since Marino. Getting the ball out quickly without sacrificing velocity or accuracy is a rare ability that few have...I'm sooo geeked about when Cutler finally gets his shot. I think the kid is going to be really special, and not just because of his physical talents.

Phil is copying off of me. I said it first.
Seriously, though... his quick-snap release did remind me a little of Marino's throwing style. Maybe not quite the rocket Marino had, but the kid has some serious heat on his throws.
I know everyone hates Simms, but I kind of like him. Probably because like Theisman, he really stuck up for Elway when it wasn't trendy to do.
Anyway, Cutler rocks. Just let the kid learn the ropes. He's going to rip it up in our system.

He also collected those 87 career rushing yards on 301 attempts. That means Dan's career rushing average was 10.4 inches per carry.

I like Simms too. But then, I also like Steak boy. And Hoge and Stinky are God's gift to television... Well, at least they're Idaho's gift. (Ack! It kills me that I had to turn on Plummer, but it needed to be done. Hopefully he'll go to TV. We need more Idaho boys setting the world straight.)

And I compare Phil Simms with Boomer Esiason...wait...aren't they the same guy???
I can look at any commentator other than that fat pig who used to play for the Ravens. Cripes, there oughta be a weight law...seeing that elephant flop to his knees on the field for comedy makes me lose my lunch.

Cutler doesn't have Marino's lead feet.
While Marino was certainly not a good pure scrambler, he was deceptively elusive. He was a master at slide stepping in the pocket to buy an extra split secord to release the ball. Cutler has a similar ability (though he's certainly more athletic). That, coupled with his quick release makes the Marino a pretty good comparison.

On the subject of comparisons...Phil Simms told an interesting story once. Originally he didn't think much of Elway, (thought he was overhyped, saying NO ONE was that good!) leading up to the Super Bowl they played against the Giants. Later he was more impressed, but it wasn't until he saw the guy up close in warmups (when he became a commentator and covered Bronco games) he admitted he was amazed and said, "hey, this guys really good." After seeing John throw passes in practice.
He paid Seven the ultimate compliment later, at the intro of John's last game saying "What a run...There will always be arguments about John Elway...was he the best to ever play? But I think physcially, physically, he was the greatest to have ever played when it came to running, throwing and applying it to the football field." Pretty heady stuff, coming from an opposing qb.
Unlike that nitwit Boomer Esiason, that has Eli Manning as possibly the best ever. :clown:
