From Jeremy Green on ESPN Insider Chat. . .
Joey (Mile High City): JG, how do you see the Denver o-line situation playing out this week? Will we see much 2 TE sets in order to keep one in to support the Freeney matchup?
SportsNation Jeremy Green: (4:23 PM ET ) Freeney has 0 sacks this year but that is because he has been nicked up. I do think they use more 2-TE sets this week. No offical word yet, but as of my last conversation yesterday with people in Denver it sounded like they were leaning towards using Carlisle Cooper at LOT so they could get Chris Kuper in at ROG. That would clearly allow them to get their best 5 guys on the field at the same time.

I've been a big fan of Coop since he took over from Dan Neil. I think the guy will be a in the lineup for us a long time!
My boy Coop will come good for us if he's asked to play at LT!

I was just making light of the fact that Jeremy Green got Coop's name wrong.
I'll give him a fair shot. A lot of people thought that Shanahan was crazy for trusting Plummer's blindside to Matt Lepsis and we all know how that turned out.

Does this mean that Tatum will be sent up the middle a lot? Does that speak to the Broncos' thoughts about Booger? Would that mean that Freeney is not thought to be a major issue since he is dragging a woulnded groin around? It is so hard to gage these developments so that one may place one's bets intelligently.....

We have a Carlisle Cooper and a Kuper Chris. Now all we need is a Kuper Cooper.
That'd be super.

Since we're not using our TE's much in the passing game, they can put Mustard in there to help on that side. I think he's one of the best blocking TEs around and he is mobile enough to handle a speed guy like Freeney.

Would be a great Idea. We should run the ball 40 times and mix in 15 pass plys...that should limit Jake to no more than 3 ints.

I hope I'm wrong on this but I've not been a fan of Carlyle since he got the job and I think he's gonne get owned on Sunday. Pass blocking the opposing RE stands to be considerably tougher than handling big slow inside tackles. The only bright spot is Kuper. Losing Lepsis is tough but if it gets Kuper a foothold on the starting RG spot a year early maybe it's worth it. Unfortunately, having Foster on the other side doesn't engender much confidence for me either. We better get some serious pass protection work out of our TE's.
If I were Plummer I'd be thinking in terms of the moving pocket and lots of roll outs...as well as lots of quick slants and screens this week, not to mention about 45 running plays. Tatum needs to go for 150 or more and bust a couple long ones.

Thanks to BigPlayShay sending me game film on Carlisle at left tackle I've had a chance to break both down and see who I think would be better. I'm leaning toward to Carlisle going to tackle and Kuper stepping up. Here's why.
Pears initially looks like a good move but you need only look at tape to see what his problems are. Gonzo made a good post about it somewhere, and I tend to agree. He's a very large man with big arms and good strength. His grip is really good and he's hard to shake lose when he gets on you.
He has some common rookie-ish problems though. The first is that he has real problem leaning into his blocks. What I mean is that rather than squaring himself infront of the defender in pass protection he over-extends and is out of position. In the run game over extends his body to make contact early. This is a big no-no because it shows a lack of patience and doesn't allow you to get your feet set when you make contact.
The other problem that occurs as a result of over-leaning his assignment is he doesn't square up his shoulders. Often during the cleveland game he would turn one shoulder in and try and block sideways. That destabilizes one side of your fram and a bullrush or swim move to the raw side will get you and your QB killed.
He doesn't have the best footwork to get his hips around and keep his target in front of him on the speed rushers and struggle there.
Carlisle on the other hand has played the position and had an amount of success there. Lepsis is definitely better, but Cooper is more like a poor-man's Lepsis. His shorter arms are more suited for Guard, but he does a decent job of getting underneath his guys' pads and pushing his man up out his attack posture neutralizing the rush. He isn't as powerful in the run game, but he has more speed and better hip movement. As a left tackle it is more important that you are a good pass protector than a good run blocker. I also think he doesn't have the best ears because he would struggle to get off the ball a lot. Those are his only knocks and his experience at the position already makes him the obvious choice.
1. Carlisle is a starter and thus you are keeping a starting lineman at the spot.
2. Chris Kuper is the next best lineman so you are starting your most talented players.
3. Kuper is going to start anyway, so this is a great way of starting him early to get the dumb mistakes out of his way. He is a real fun one to watch and is going to impress you all. You'll see some jitters and some rookie mistakes, but we have an amazing prospect that will make our interior dominant.:thanku:

4. Lepsis is an outstanding run blocker and incorporating another physical presence into the lineup only makes sense.

As of Thursday afternoon, I don't think a final decision had been made, but perhaps it was decided today.

To date...all through the season...playing scout teams, occassional first/second team reps.
His progress has surprised the hell out of Rick Dennison & drawn the attention of Shanahan.
You'll notice Denver didn't add any O-linemen when Lepsis went down...even with Meadows still hurting.
Kupoer & Myers are ready to go if needed.

Cobbs is injured....I've heard everything from a nagging ankle sprain to a shoulder problem & have never been able to get any definitive answer to what ails him.
He's also dynamite on Special Teams...I believe that's how he made the team, so, he could be the first to go if he doesn't come around.
The Broncos need everyone available & coaches (and the GM) scour the waiver wires all the time looking for people who might be immediate help at a variety of positions.

I guess so, but the coaches do like both Cobbs & DeVoe, so they would blink several times before cutting the strings.
There would have to be somebody very appealing for one reason or another for them to pull the trigger on either player.
DeVoe is an ok Special Teams guy BUT he let a likely TD slip through his fingers in the first game against the Rams that became a crucial, game-changing interception, so he has been active only once I believe.
Cobbs has much potential as a power back.

Cobbs really saved himself by showing up for games, but It's pretty clear that the better backs are ahead of him and the real key to Cobbs big runs (Kuper) is getting credit for it.
Is Cobbs looking better? I hear they are a strong combo.
They aren't a combo. Cobbs just ran through the enormous holes that Kuper was plowing for him. Kuper will do the same thing for Bell.

I think Cobbs ran the same in practice and games. His forte' was yards after contact. His skills just weren't on display in practice where they didn't tackle to the ground. I would like to see him challenge M. Bell if he were healthy.
Do you get the coaches tapes? I don't know how to get them but I've wanted to for awhile. You're the gourmet around here for Oline evaluation and I'm getting pumped up too. I'm coming down from Aspen for the game and I need to find more COWBELLS!

That's great man. You need to represent! No, I don't get the coaches tape but I watched the games and was at training camp, so I've seen these guys take quite a few snaps.
Cobbs had average hands and early in camp he struggled with fumbles. He also didn't have the best vision.
One thing people forget was all through pre-season Tatum and Mike Bell split carries on the first team. The depth of our offensive line, as just confirmed by Wabbit, is maybe the best in the league with two guys who could start and be successful in the league playing back up - Myers and Kuper, both who also benifited from working next to each other. Thus Cobbs was running behind essentially a line with starters against second and third string defenders. Kuper and Myers were making Cobbs look all world. I don't think Cobbs is worthless (I left that designation to Dayne) but he's not the all-around threat that Tatum is and doesn't have the vision of Mike Bell.
I'm sensitive about it because people like to praise the running backs and not the line and I still hear people complaining that we aren't running the ball well (1st in the AFC isn't good enough, I guess). So there is the group of fans who believe our third string running back is the answer. Scott Hastings whines about it all the time on 950 the FAN.
Hey people, if you don't believe me, fine. But if you want to tell Shanahan and Bobby Turner that you know better than them how the running back depth chart should look, you need to get a clue.
Kuper will make our offense SUPER! :super:

Well I don't listen the FAN and Cobbs is hurt anyway. I agree the line hooked him up with some nice holes in the preseason. If they hadn't Cobbs may not have done as well if he was hit behind the line every time. My foggy memory is still convinced he had some awesome runs where he broke several tackles and dragged other guys for many yards. He needs to get his ass and his ankle and shoulder out on the field and run those combo plays with the right guard.

Actually Nash did better at breaking tackles than Cobbs did. He was playing pretty fired up, though having a chance to go against the team that cut him. Anyway, if he is good on special teams we'll need him because they've been terrible.

If Cooper gets the nod on Sunday it'll also be a chance for him to showcase his versatility along that line considering he's a free-agent next season and given Kuper's speedy progress may or may not be required in Denver next season.

I was in Cleveland last week and went to the game with Je'Rod Cherry, who was a backup DB on the three Patriots' SB teams. He told me Cedric Cobbs is a beast and no one could ever tackle him in one-on-one drills. Cherry said if Cobbs could ever stay healthy he's be a star but was always getting nicked up.
As for Carlise, I remember being at the Corey Dillon game in Cincy and Cooper had to fill in at left tackle. He got torched repeatedly. Thank goodness he's improved but I'm still nervous. I considered him the weakest of the starting five.

Guess we'll find out....Lepsis moved over to LT a few years back....he struggled but tuned out okay.
It would be nice if the Line didn't need any wholesale changes and we could just Plug in another home grown, with little drop off.

id say that two years ago(i think), roethlisbergers first year when they had one loss and played the 8-0 pats and the nthe 9-0 eagles or some records like that, that had to have been the best two game stretch, i dont think either would close tho but they sure had the hype liek this one does.
