I found a wild thread at the Rayduh Nation Ground Zero board. Check out the loony rumor regarding a well known Bronco. This stuff had me laughing my head off. And pay attention to the dates of the posts. This stuff's all recent!

And now, on to the zoo...

Am I losing my mind or did I hear that Al Davis is considering bringing John Elway on as an

offensive coordinator? Second, am I the only one who would be pissed if Al really did it?

Why would you be pissed if Elway joined us??? I think the jackasses would be pissed. All

rivalries aside, the man was one of the greatest qb's ever. I have met him. I always remind him

that we were one of the few teams that he had a losing record against.

I think Elway would be an excellent addition to our staff. The guy knows the Broncos inside out.

Still, I think this is just a wild spin. Where's the link???

Very true, madbomber. Al wanted Elway, and Elway would have loved playing for Oakland.

Rozelle blocked the deal. Imagine Elway playing under the silver and black. I honestlt believe we

would have six, seven Super Bowl trophies. Too bad it did not happen.

As much as I HATED Elway while he was a player (He is #3 on my "All-Time Most Hated

Athletes List"), he would be welcomed aboard... I really doubt that he would be considered,

however...

And besides, other than being one helluva QB, what credentials does he have?? I don't believe

he has much, if any, coaching experiance...

I've seen it posted on this board so many times: the alleged blocked trade of John Elway to the

Raiders by Pete Rozelle... yet there is no evidence of this ANYWHERE. There's rampant

speculation, but there's speculation that Reggie Bush ended up with the Saints to help rebuild

that city, too.

Considering this was 23 years ago, and there's not a single piece of evidence supporting it,

don't you think we should let it go?

I do.

As for Elway coaching, I don't know how good a move that is. The guy hasn't coached anything

more than his son's pop warner team...

Actually, Moose, didn't you challenge this theory already? Remember, I found an article by a

sportswriter that referred to the incident, then I found one from an on-line newspaper archive

that hinted that the Raiders had meetings regarding the acquisition of Elway for Howie Long and

a first round pick. The article said that the deal (as well as one by San Diego) had been called

off after meetings with the league office. The article did not draw a direct correlation between

the league meeting and a nixed deal, but it left the door open. I said at the time that the on-line

archives of most papers don't go back to 1983, so it was hard to do computer research. Your

reponse had something to do with "not wanting to go to the local library and look it up."

The point is that the rumor has persisted because there is probably some truth in it, but that we

are all (including you) too complacent to go check our facts. Feel free to prove the Nation

wrong. However, that probably won't be easy. It's very hard to prove that something didn't

happen. It's why conspiracy theories have such long lifespans..

I did challenge the theory already. The one shred of evidence that I found came from a

columnist, which is about the least reliable source on the planet.

I just don't think it happened. In this sort of scenario, the onus is on you to prove that it DID

happen, not on me to prove that it DIDN'T.

True in the real world, BUT this is a Raider board and we are allowed to have our own

conspiracy theories. In this little "Universe" truth is somewhat Raider-centric. Did you ever

read/watch The Crucible? We're kind of like the Salem Witch Trial judges with the whole "Prove

you're not a witch" line. Burden of proof actually rests with the accused around here. You know,

guilty until proven innocent as far as conspiracies go.

Exactly. And if he drowns, it was because Rozelle did not want him to talk about how he

I'd love for Elway to join us,I put the rivalry aside too and have him #3 of the Greatest QBs of all

Time, but isn't he owner of Colorado's Arena Team? I'm sure he doesn't have all that

time,Secondly,I don't see a link or anything valid,therefore I call this BS.

Number THREE? Who are the first two?

Marino - no way.

I can understand the argument for Montana. I would disagree with that argument, but at least it's

an argument worth making.

Moose, it is true. Al Davis tried to get Elway. I don't have any links. I guess I could go to the

Denver Public Library, and dig up the facts. But to be honest, I don't give a rat's ass. Everything

happened for a reason. Rozelle did torpedoe that deal. And we both know that if Elway had

been a Raider, we would have six, seven Lombardi trophies. Youwould still be looking for your

As My Personal Opinion.

It goes:

1.Marino
2.Montana
3.Elway
4.Unitas
5.Favre

I pick Marino #1 based on what he did as a QB,individualy,He never won SB,but he set the bar

as far as Statistics go.Montana was great,Elway was great too (don't be mad because I didn't

place him at #1) Unitas a great QB he put up some nice numbers in his career,Favre is just a

warrior,Even Though I can't stand him,he plays the game with a Passion of no other,he's

almost going to top Marino on the TD Passes.

Others that deserve to be on that list are:
Steve Young,Fran Tarkenton,Roger Staubach,Bart Starr,Joe Namath,Jim Kelly,George

Blanda,Terry Bradshaw.

Perhaps, Warlord. But I'm sorry if having your word on it doesn't make it official. Unless you

were in the office with Rozelle when he "torpedoed" the deal, I'm not buying.

For it to be anything more than just assumption (much like your fanbase assuming you get

more penalties called against you because "the league hates" you), facts have to be present.

The word of one poster on a message board (who I respect) and one columnist (who I do not)

isn't gonna cut it.

That's cool, Moose. I respect that. You should never believe anything that is not confirmed. For

all you know, I could be inventing this to get you riled-up. To quote Josef Gobbells..."Repeat a lie

often enough, and it will be believed". He was Hitler's Minister of Propaganda. I am not a

minister of anything. But I was around when it happened. I take no pleasure in spreading

half-truths and rumours. What have I to gain???

I plan to be around to watch my daughter give me a grandchild. Then, as we used to say in our

Spec Ops group..."the Warlord seconded out". If you can't believe it, fine. But I am not a liar, nor

do I pretend to be a know-all. I do not take offense that you question my word in this respect.

Have a great day.

Again, I don't think you're a liar. I just think that, especially with sports, there are a lot of

half-truths and rumors that are total BS, and they're never disproved (like the frozen envelope in

the '85 Draft that ended up giving Ewing to the Knicks), so they just stick around for years and

years.

That's like me coming here and saying "Bo Jackson should have been a Bronco, but because

Al Davis' lovechild is Paul Tagliabue, he blocked the draft pick. Amusing anecdote, sure. But not

halfway true.

Davis may well have wanted Elway. Might have offered something for him too. But the bottom

line is, there's no proof.

Considering Elway and Shanahan are still very tight, I find it very unlikely Elway would have

anything to do with Big Al and the raiders.

The general felling in the Bronco organization is that Big Al stiffed Sahanhan out of a lot of

dough.

Elway is independently wealthy to say the least. His name is on about 35 car dealerships here

in Denver. He owns the Colorado Crush of the AFL also and is very active with that team.

And why would he want to come in the raider organization??? What would be the

motivation????? He has said many times he is not intrested in coaching.

This sounds to me like some sort of pipe dream raider fans are using to try and capture some

of the glory that has long since evaperated from the raider "nation."

Call me sceptical on this one. Even Big Al couldn`t pull this one off.

Holy ****ing hell. Cracked is not the word. They are ****ing insane. Rozelle did not "block" a trade between the colts and the raiders. I doubt Elway would want to coach a team he played against and hated for 16 years. Also, his home is here, his kids are here. Are the Raiders going to pay him more then the 80 million + he got from the dealerships he owned? I dont think so.

It's like a pack of bored, de-balled zoo lions with nothing to chase. They smell a burger burning on the grill in the Safari Cafe and they begin to discuss what they'd do with it if they could get their paws on it. They have no savana any longer to roam. You actually gotta feel kinda sorry for them. The lions, I mean. Not the Raider fans without a football team.
