Calgary, Alberta -- The Canadian Hockey League has announced the roster of players for Team WHL who will compete in the 2006 ADT Canada Russia Challenge next month in B.C. and the Eastern Division leading Brandon Wheat Kings will be well represented.

Among the eighteen forwards named were Colorado Avalanche second round draft choice Codey Burki and second year center Andrew Clark. Nine defencemen were chosen inlcuding 19-year old Dustin Kohn. Sharing the netminding will be Leland Irving of the Everett Silvertips and Tri-Cities' Carey Price, who beat out Brandon's Tyler Plante.

New Hockeys Future prospect rankings...Avs move up from #23 to #20:

Strengths: Wojtek Wolski will play his first full year in the NHL this season, and should be a contender for the Calder Trophy as top rookie. Paul Stastny has made the team as a rookie and is contributing as well. Injuries opened the door to allow Brad Richardson into the Avalanche lineup last year. Most of the remaining forwards of note play in the NCAA, which means the Avalanche can wait for them to develop and not use up valuable years of pro experience under the new CBA.
Weaknesses: Top goaltending prospect Peter Budaj has been inconsistent between the pipes for Colorado and there is little behind him. The Avalanche blue line is also woefully thin, with Johnny Boychuk the only prospect who is anywhere close to making the jump to the NHL. The Avalanche will need to upgrade their prospects on defense, especially with an aging blue line in the NHL.
Top Five Prospects: Wojtek Wolski (LW), Ryan Stoa (C), Paul Stastny (C), Chris Stewart (RW), Brad Richardson (C)

Story by Elizabeth Severy

Codey Burki has been on a tear. The 18-year-old Manitoba native has scored at least one point in 14 of 17 games with the Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings after spending two weeks in Colorado during training camp in September.

Burki attended both the Avalanche’s rookie camp and training camp in September and soaked up knowledge from the likes of Joel Quenneville, Joe Sakic and Milan Hejduk. Burki didn’t make the opening night roster, but he learned what he needs to improve to play in the National Hockey League.

“I saw what it takes to be a pro,” Burki said. “That’s what I took with me to the Western League.”

The play at training camp was “a lot harder than it is here (in Brandon),” Burki said. “Training camp really helped in coming here to the Western league where the pace is a little bit slower.”

He returned to the Wheat Kings confident and ready to do what he does best – in his own words, “making plays and putting pucks in the net.”

With 13 goals and 12 assists for 25 points in 17 games, Burki is a point behind teammate Mark Derlago for the team lead and ranks third in WHL scoring. Derlago is the first to admit that Burki is the team’s number one man and most explosive scorer.

“He’s the top guy, a great scorer, and he’s taken on a leadership role,” Derlago said. “He’s a flashy-type player, good with the puck and likes to make a pretty play.”

Burki, the Avs’ second round selection (59th overall) in the 2006 Entry Draft, has been with the Wheat Kings for four years, starting as a 16-year-old. He led Brandon in scoring last season with 61 points in 70 games.

“He’s become more consistent, more dedicated, bigger and stronger,” said Brandon Assistant Coach Brad Wells.

The 6’0”, 190-pound Burki has worked hard to become one of Canada’s top young prospects and his dedication is paying off.

He scored the game-winning goal and added an assist for Team Orr at the 2006 Canadian Hockey League’s Top Prospect Game in Ottawa, earning him top player honors. Burki also participated in Canada’s National Junior Development Camp last summer.

Burki was recently selected to represent Team WHL in the annual Canada Russia Challenge, which pits Canada’s top juniors against a Russian junior all-star team. The event will be held Nov. 29-30 in British Columbia.

Burki’s success has been partly due to his willingness to acknowledge his faults.

“He knows what he’s got to work on – competing every night on a consistent basis,” Wells said.

Burki has had a solid start to the 2006-07 season. He collected multiple-point efforts in six games, including a four-point night (one goal, three assists) on Oct. 20. His nine power-play goals rank second in the WHL.

“We always knew he was an offensive player,” Wells said. “His skill level is top end.”

The new rules enforced in both the NHL and WHL stand to add to Burki’s strengths, but he says that everything can be improved in his game. He will focus on bolstering his defensive play.

“The new rules will enhance his game, specifically in the offensive area,” Wells said. “It is harder now to defend in your own end. With his ability to skate – he’s big and strong – he’ll be able to be strong defensively.”

Burki hopes his offensive skill and defensive improvement will land him in the NHL one day. If his early season success is any indication, that day may not be far off.

Dartmouth doubles up Canisius 6-3. David Jones notched a goal on the power play and finished even.

Boston University shuts out Merrimack 3-0. Brandon Yip did not record a shot on goal.

Miami and Ohio State skate to a 4-4 tie. Tom Fritsche had two shots on goal and finished plus two. Justin Mercier had two assists.

Denver upsets number one Minnesota 1-0. It’s the first home loss for the Golden Gophers this season. Ryan Stoa had two shots on goal and finished even. Mike Carman recorded one shot and was even. Derek Peltier also had one shot and finished even.

Observations: Peltier is a nice college player, but there is nothing that sticks out that oozes future NHLer. Ryan Stoa hasn’t taken that next step that I and others had predicted. His play is stagnant; you only really notice him on the power play. While some Avalanche fans have had notions of him turning pro after his sophomore season, he’s better off spending another year at Minnesota. Mike Carman looks to be the best of the Gophers Avs prospects at this point. He hits, kills penalties and has some nice offensive instincts. He looks as if he could fill that 3rd/4th line center role in the NHL; a scoring threat on the PK.

New Hampshire tops Massachusetts 5-1. Brett Hemingway had one assist, two shots on goal, and was plus two.

Michigan thumps Alaska-Fairbanks 6-2. TJ Hensick , who has not scored a goal since November 25, recorded a hat trick. Hensick only trails Air Force’s Eric Ehn in NCAA scoring with 41 points.

Observations: It would seem that TJ Hensick is the most NHL ready unsigned Colorado Avalanche prospect. He’s a very good setup man, but in the first game against the Nanooks, he found his scoring touch. Hensick kills penalties and is good on face-offs. Hensick has reshaped his game from selfish puck hog to solid two-way player. Billy Sauer has had a nice stretch in which he was recently named CCHA Goaltender of the Week. His rebound control is an issue, but Sauer’s form looks better then earlier in the season.

Colorado Corner:

In a battle of the service academies, Air Force beats Army 4-1. Eric Ehn continues his fantastic season with two assists in the game.

According to Colorado Avalanche GM Francois Giguere, newly acquired Michael Wall will report to the Arizona Sundogs (CHL). With a split affiliation, the Avs can only have one goaltender in Albany (AHL). Rather then displacing Tyler Weiman, they felt it best to send him to the Sundogs, where he will get playing time. It's expected that both Wall and Weiman will play for the Avs new AHL affilate in Cleveland next season.

Avs Keeping a Close Eye on Jones

Dartmouth will host Princeton this weekend as they join the ECACHL conference playoffs (after having a bye last week). David Jones and the rest of the Big Green finished the regular season with wins against Cornell and Colgate on February 23rd and 24th. Typically, the Avs will have a couple of scouts at the Dartmouth games, but in the final regular season weekend, there were five representatives from the Avalanche in attendance, including Craig Billington (Director of Player Development).

One can speculate that the Avs will attempt to get the talented Jones under contract this off-season. If Jones returns for his senior year at Dartmouth, he would become a free agent in the summer of 2008.
