FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- John Abraham continues to be slowed by injuries.
The Atlanta Falcons announced Tuesday that the three-time Pro Bowl defensive end will undergo abdominal surgery and miss three to four weeks.
Abraham originally suffered a groin injury in the season opener at Carolina and then missed the next three games before returning for the Oct. 15 meeting against the New York Giants.
After leaving the game against New York in the fourth quarter, Abraham missed this past Sunday's 41-38 overtime victory over Pittsburgh.
"After rehabbing and working with our medical staff, it was our hope that John would be ready to play against Cincinnati [this Sunday]," Falcons coach Jim Mora Jr. said. "Unfortunately, a second opinion conducted Monday afternoon confirmed that John will need minor surgery to help him get back to 100 percent."
Since being selected 13th overall by the New York Jets in 2000, Abraham has played a full 16-game season just three times in six campaigns.
Acquired from the Jets in June for a first-round pick, Abraham is part of a talented defensive line in Atlanta that also features Pro Bowl tackle Rod Coleman and end Patrick Kerney.
Abraham, who uses his speed to get to the quarterback, has three sacks and two forced fumbles in two games this season. He has 56½ sacks in 75 career games.
Atlanta (4-2), which ranks eighth in the league in scoring defense (17.8 points per game), is in second place in the NFC South, one game behind New Orleans.

A 1st rounder and $18 million up front for this? How much do you want to bet that he's out longer than 3-4 weeks? Gotta play it safe, right John?

We sure dodged a bullet not getting this guy. I was about to drink the Kool-Aid the Abraham supporters were dealing...Thank you, Shanny.

My issue with him (well, one of them, anyway) wasn't so much that he gets hurt, it's that he absolutely will not play through an injury. If he feels so much as an itch in his crotch, he's not suiting up.

When he plays, he's one of the best. But, he's ALWAYS hurt. Every year he's hurt. Teams still throw big money at him anyway. Cost the falcons a #1 and a huge signing bonus.

Where are the people who were calling Dumervil a midget and Lang another Brownco reject while they wanted us to wreck our franchise over this gutless piece of ****?

I heard that he's going to be out for the rest of the season.
I guess somebody is just writing their story a few weeks early. That will probably be a true statement by then.

This sonofabitch is even more shameless than I imagined.
An $18 million signing bonus and the prick gives them seven quarters of football.
Too goddamn funny.

I didn't like the Dumerville pick because Anderson was still available. And I wanted a better DL in here than Lang. But I agreed, that the Broncs should not give up anything more valuable than a case of Tampax for this lazy POS.

They're in the Witless Protection Program ...
Even Andre Carter was radically overpriced. Trevor too for that matter. The market for pass-rushing d-linemen was skewed all out of proportion, and Shanny showed great restraint avoiding the impulse to buy ...

I was glad the Broncos drafted Dumervil. He produced in college, and in the 4th round take the chance. I also wanted Denver to draft Mark Anderson. Imagine if Denver pulled off the double 4th rounders.

I think we can trust Shanny (and his plan for the Broncos). Although I like to MMGM too (I wanted LenDale before the combine performance). Not every player is going to work out, but given the history, I'll take our FO over any in the league.

I have been humbled. Here is my post and Slap's response.

Adding Abe will mean the Broncos will get a steady consistent pass rush without having to blitz. The big problem with blitzing is that the QB sees it coming and calls an audible that is why Denver didn't have very many sacks last year because they blitzed all the time.
If Denver trades for Abe they will have the pass rush without blitzing thus they can drop more people and rush only 4. This in turn will give Denver more sacks and more Ints. due to the fact that they are getting pressure and dropping 7 into the passing lanes.
Trading for Abe will be the biggest improvement Denver can make this offseason.
f he's such a game changer, how come New York has never won jack**** with him? 10-6 is the best record they've ever mustered with John Abraham in the lineup. I thought the guy was worth several wins a year all by himself.
I don't like to eat crow but I never back down from doing it.

I have an innate ability to spot a malingerer. I think its because I was perceived as a bit of a layabout myself in my younger days.

Glad Shanny didn't listen to me on this guy... though, hindsight is always 20.20. I banged the table for Javon Walker against most people on this board, too... so you hit some, you miss some. The same "logic" that told us to avoid Abraham also told us to avoid Walker. Luckily, the front office made the right pick... and once again showed that you often have to pay guys to get results. Big surprise that our best players on offense and defense also happen to be our highest paid, huh?
Though, I do think it's funny that after a decade of refusing to deal with the D-line properly, some people think this guy being injured somehow makes that "right."
So, we didn't sign a guy who got hurt... so it's O.K. that we've blown it on the D-line since 1997? Ten years of Kavika Pittmans and Leon Letts is suddenly justified because we avoided one free agent? Solid logic.
That's like the guy who never leaves his house because something bad might happen to him.
We'll see how things pan out. Lang and shorty seem to be panning out pretty well. Eventually, you take enough swings and you hit one. Too bad it took us a decade. Well, we hit two others over that span and ran them out of town as fast as we could. Let's see if we actually pull our heads out and sign these guys to extensions.
