AP) HANOVER, N.H. Dartmouth football players who threw punches instead of shaking hands at the end of Saturday's game may face discipline or arrest, college and police officials say.
The fighting broke out on Memorial Field after Holy Cross came from behind to beat Dartmouth 24-21 with a field goal in overtime.
After Holy Cross players celebrated atop the Dartmouth "D" painted on the field, fights broke out between the teams when they lined up for the customary postgame handshakes. Witnesses said some players were thrown to the ground and kicked. Coaches, campus security and Hanover police broke it up.
"We'd separate one group, and then it would start up again with another group," said Police Chief Nick Giaccone. "We'd get to that place and it would keep rolling, and a third fight would break out before it finally stopped."
Giaccone said Dartmouth's game tape shows only the end of the melee. Authorities hope the public may have recordings that show how it started.
Investigators have spoken to both coaches, "but they had totally opposite accounts of what initiated the fight," he said.
Dartmouth athletic director Josie Harper spent Monday meeting with coach Buddy Teevens and some players.
"We're not going to be docile on this," she said. "I'm going to talk to as many people as I can."
