Chargers DE Olshansky out a month after surgery

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2631884

The top-ranked San Diego Chargers defense will play the next month without starting right end Igor Olshansky after the third-year veteran underwent arthroscopic knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus cartilage Wednesday morning.

It marks the second knee injury of this season for Olshansky, who suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in the opener, and missed one game. The latest injury occurred last Sunday in a victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

"The hard part is that [Olshansky] has really made very good strides this year in terms of his development," coach Marty Schottenheimer said. "But we feel comfortable [with] Jacques Cesaire in there. Fortunately, it is an area where we have some depth."

Highly regarded backup Cesaire, who filled in for Olshansky in the second game of this season and who started 17 contests in 2004-2005, moves into the lineup. Cesaire doesn't possess Olshansky's bulk, but he is a quicker defender and has been productive in the past when afforded a chance to start. In fact, Cesaire has more tackles this year (seven) than does Olshansky (six).

That said, the loss of Olshansky is a tough one for the Chargers, because he is such a good fit in the team's 3-4 front. The former University of Oregon standout, a native of the Ukraine, is a powerful lineman, blessed with great natural strength, and a terrific anchor against the run.

Olshanksy, 24, is an end who will never register big, individual numbers, but who occupies blockers, gets good upfield push, and allows the San Diego linebackers to run to the ball. A second-round choice in the 2004 draft, Olshansky has appeared in 34 games and started 32 of them. He has 74 tackles and 4½ sacks.

It's a shame that he's out for now. Hopefully he'll be back 100 percent by the Bengals game. Anyways, I'm not that worried since we have depth at that position as well.

2ND string is 2nd string and Cesaire is 2nd string for a reason.

good luck, guess who they are going to pick on and if he fails you can thrown in the 2nd year kid.

Well, otehr guys will have to step up.

Olhansky was/is a beast for them. Not nearly as important as Jamal, but nonetheless a nice guy on that dl.

A 2nd stringer on our team would be a starter on most other teams. He's 2nd stringer because Luis Castillo is better. He was the starter along with Igor in 2004. I'm not saying I'm happy that he has to start, but he's more than adequate and I'm not worried. That's the thing about having good depth. You may not always have your best guys out there due to injuries, but if you have good depth then you won't miss a beat that much. Heck, he played well against the Raiders and the Titans when Igor was out.

I also don't get your comment about picking on him? It's not like he's playing cornerback or safety. He's a DE in a 3-4 defense. All he has to do is take up the blockers in order to pave the way for the linebackers.

The only real downside is that we won't be able to rotate guys in and out as much. Cesaire and Robinson would always spell out one of the DEs on drives to keep Igor and Luis fresh. I guess Bingham will have to fulfill the role now.

Did I also leave out the part that this is the Chief's oline we're dealing with? The glorious line of yesteryear is in shambles now, and ripe for the picking.

Running his direction

Well i guess marty thought Olshansky paved the way for the LBs pretty good or better than Cesaire so if he and the kid don't play well your LBs will have a tough time making plays on LJ (you don't want to give him any room to work with) or he will kill ya. (guess we will see)

I'm kinda ashamed because I'm having crocodile tears. I try never to be pleased by injuries. I hope he fully recovers...AFTER we get thru two games in 4 weeks against our obvious rival. I can't help it.

With our offense as lame as Cold Pizza on ESPN2, we can use any help we can get. The funny thing is that our team is almost completely healthy on offense but still sucking.

That's too bad. He's a good player and they have a division rival this week. I never like to see a player get injured, but I'm never upset when I know that one of our division rivals is weakened. This will be a fun game because either way I'll be happy. If the Chiefs win it gives us some padding in the division and if the Chiefs lose I get to watch Iowanian make threads about how tired he is. :~ohyah!:

"Ahh...An enemy of our enemy is a friend indeed..."

Hopefully the Chefs can get out of their funk and give us an actual lead in the division. All we can do it take care of our own business. Either way, one division rival will get wounded...KC, perhaps mortally.

Touche. In terms of DL, yeah. I guess I should have been clearer.
But I sense some frustration in you. Are you mad because your AV isn't as big and clear as it should be? I know I am.

Cesaire is a good player but Igor is a beast. That being said, Cesaire has started a number of games in the past and even one this year. Sorry to disappoint you all but the dropoff has not been noticable at all.

Where you might see the dropoff is if/when Cesaire is rotated out. I believe Derreck Robinson will be the backup now. He's shown some good flashes but is very inexperienced and raw.

I'm actually not as worried about our D since KC's O isn't what it used to be. The Rams next week might be present more of a problem.
