View Full Version : Why is it okay to have brawls in baseball yet it is unaccpetable in football?

Brawls happen all the time in baseball but no one seems to make a big deal out of it. Yet, when football players who play a much more violent sport get into a brawl ala SC-Clemson and FIU-Miami, it is this huge national event and their acts are deemed deplorable.
Why do baseball players get a pass for whipping someone's ass yet football players are not allowed to? And if you want to take this even further, why is a basketball fight "a most unconscionable action" yet hockey players taking to fisticuffs is no big deal?
Why is this okay?

And think about this: Latrell Spreewell gets into an altercation with his coach and it becomes THE major news story across America for months but when the Toronto Blue Jay's manager got into a freaking full blown fight with his pitcher after he took him out of a game this year, nobody makes a peep about it.

It's okay in baseball because the baseball players are not wearing helmets and tons of padding that would blunt the force of most blows against their bodies. The attacking ballplayer risks serious injury to himself in retaliation while a football player is unlikely to be hurt physically once he launches into an attack therefore increasing the danger to everyone around him.
Besides, most football brawls look like the one you saw at the Orange Bowl. Most baseball brawls look more like frat keggers where a rival frat tries to steal the keg.
Hope this is clear now.

Because there hasn't been a decent punch thrown in a baseball brawl in years.

I don't recall the Toronto manager being choked by his pitcher...

...agreed.
We didn't even see what actually happened either. The two "combatants" didn't say a word on the matter. They both seemed to just let it go.
Sprewell's just an asshole.

I think it all depends on how the fight develops. Had it just been two football players who got into a tussle and threw some punches it would have been a non-story. This happens frequently in basketball and the guys get ejected and face fines and game time. Same with hockey most fights just involve two guys and they let them fight it out.
For some reason its is part of the "culture" of hockey and baseball. However if a baseball player came out the dug-out and started swinging bats and kicking guys while they are down on the field im sure it would get plenty of press, and the guy swinging the bat would be done for the season. Same with hockey if you started stomping on another guy with your skates im sure you would be done.

Because baseball players are pussies and everybody knows that nobody is going to get hurt with all that slapping and wrestling. A better analogy is hockey. Those guys know how to punch each other out. ;D
