View Full Version : Are We At War With North Korea?
Rohirrim

Don't know if anybody else is watching this on CNN, but the UN Security Counsel just passed sanctions against North Korea. The North Korean ambassador basically blamed everything on the United States and said that NK considers the manipulation of the security counsel by the U.S. and the sanctions themselves, to be a declaration of war against NK. He then got up and left the room in the middle of comments by the South Korean ambassador. I hope our military is at red alert. I would assume they are. Having spent a tour of duty on the Korea DMZ, I'll bet those guys are wide awake.
Thought this might be worthy of main board posting.

The difference between Iraq and north Korea is that everyone in the world agrees that Kim Jong Il is a total Douche bag. China and Russian are sick of the regugees fleeing into Manchuria and Vladavostok because there is not food, no power and no infrastructure. Jong Il plans to use Nuclear poer to hold the world hostage and force them to feed his populace so he can continue to dedicate the mojaority of his resources towards the military.
When I was in Korea you could go up to the DMZ and look across. The communists build big cardboard facades to replicate the real ones in South Korea.
Kim Jong Il has been the worst in human rights violations since he took over and is a pet project for all of the major human rights organizations in the world. A good example Kim Song Jung, a man I tought when I was over there. His brother is on the other side and can't leave. He says that dissenters are put into prison camps and where they, their children, and their children are to stay for the rest of their lives. The three generation deal is particularly horrible.
Here is a map of the area:
http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/world/dprk/images/Korea-at-Night.jpg
You can see even the rural Mancuria has more power than the captial of the country. It is a place that is in dire need of some kind of intervention, be it war, food relief, whatever.
I've been pretty upset the US has been sitting on their thumbs with the country since the eighties. It's a problem no one wanted to deal with and now it's caught up to us.
If we removed the guy we could take out some of our forces stationed there. I'm personally of the belief that his army's morale must be pretty low and it wouldn't be hard to force a coup or get them to give up right away.
We'll see.

All joking aside, I hope it doesn't come down to arms conflict but NK is like the little punk in the neighborhood that has a big brother (China) and will pick a fight with anyone. Study: Army stretched to breaking point
WASHINGTON (AP) — Stretched by frequent troop rotations to Iraq and Afghanistan, the Army has become a "thin green line" that could snap unless relief comes soon, according to a study for the Pentagon.
Andrew Krepinevich, a retired Army officer who wrote the report under a Pentagon contract, concluded that the Army cannot sustain the pace of troop deployments to Iraq long enough to break the back of the insurgency. He also suggested that the Pentagon's decision, announced in December, to begin reducing the force in Iraq this year was driven in part by a realization that the Army was overextended.

N. Korea Air Has No Radioactivity
Results from an initial air sampling after North Korea's announced nuclear test showed no evidence of radioactive particles that would be expected from a successful nuclear detonation, a U.S. government intelligence official said Friday.
The readings reinforce uncertainty about the size and success of that underground explosion, which North Korea has trumpeted as a nuclear test. It also keeps alive lingering questions about whether it was in fact a nuclear blast. Data from seismic sensors have already indicated the explosion was smaller than expected.

Not so fast........
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/10/14/nkorea.test.sample/index.html
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A preliminary analysis of air samples from North Korea shows "radioactive debris consistent with a North Korea nuclear test," according to a statement from the office of the top U.S. intelligence official.
The statement, from the office of Director of National Intelligence John Negroponte, was sent to Capitol Hill but not released publicly. CNN obtained it from a congressional source.
If confirmed, the nuclear weapons test that North Korea claimed it conducted on Monday would be the first of its kind since Pakistan's underground blast in 1998. (Watch information on first evidence of radioactivity -- 1:23)
Pyongyang's claim has renewed fears of a regional arms race and that North Korea might aid terrorists with nuclear materials or technology. (Full story)
The national intelligence office statement said the air samples were collected Wednesday, and analysis found debris that would be consistent with a nuclear test "in the vicinity of Punggye" on Monday.
"Additional analysis is ongoing and will be completed in a few days," the statement said.
The South Korean Defense Ministry told CNN that the United States has informed it that radioactivity has been detected.
The report is in contrast to information provided to CNN earlier Friday from two U.S. government officials with access to classified information. Those officials said that an initial air sampling over North Korea showed no indication of radioactive debris.
The White House said it had no confirmation that the North Koreans conducted a nuclear test.
"We've seen the various press reports," said National Security Council spokesman Fred Jones. "We still have no definitive statement on the event. The intelligence community continues to analyze the data."
The U.S. Air Force flew a WC-135 Constant Phoenix atmospheric collection aircraft on Tuesday to collect air samples from the region.
The intelligence community and the military will also continue to collect air samples in the region and use satellite information to try to collect radiological data that would confirm a nuclear test, officials said. But as time goes on, it will be increasingly difficult to achieve confirmation.
Officials emphasized earlier Friday that the data collected are preliminary and provide no conclusive evidence about the North Korean event.
It is possible there was no radiological data. That could be the case if: the North Koreans successfully sealed the site; it was such a small detonation and so deep underground there was no escape of nuclear debris; or the test was actually conventional explosives.
The U.N. Security Council has agreed to vote Saturday on whether to impose sanctions on North Korea over the purported nuclear test, according to John Bolton, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

That's funny - I don't hear this kind of urgency re: NK coming from the Bush WH.
When Clinton didn't go beyond supporting sanctions against Iraq, right-wingers accused him of being too soft.
Funny how these same people are silent about Bush's handling of NK (except when they're trying to blame Clinton for six years of BushCo inaction, that is.)
Also funny how the Bush WH can state that using nukes to take out Iran's alleged nuclear weapons facilities is an option that's 'on the table' whereas the same option isn't on the table when we're faced with an 'axis of evil' club member who just detonated a nuclear bomb, plans to do it again, and defies attempts at sanctions as "an act of war."

What's wierd to me is that this war of ideology w/n the gop camp over whether to pay the man or (In Bone's voice) 'dammit, Jim, there are principles at state,' really echos the Reagan admin on whether to engage with China. the funny thing is Reagan stayed out of it pretty much, and Haig/Bush/Baker fired the neocons. Meanwhile Crazy Ron offered to get rid of ALL our nukes. Maybe he wasn't that crazy.

Funny how these same people are silent about Bush's handling of NK (except when they're tring to blame Clinton for six years of BushCo inaction, that is.)
LOL also quite funny I pegged you when I said you would turn the subject into a Bush bash :giggle:

I'll take that as an "I can't dispute anything you just said in your last post, LABF."

If you'd like to know my thoughts on the subject go to the member's page find me and look at my last few posts. I said all of this already. We are at a building point where by we are both poking each other with sticks. We have a bigger stick. They have numbers a ground war right now isn't viable. If they invaded SK, it would take weeks to stop thier advance and get material in place over there just to support a long term battle. The simple truth is this we would need no less than 500,000 infantry troops (NOT COUNTING SUPPORT I mean leg troops) just for a counter attack. After the first 5,000 or so US GI's bite it in country we would have a choice draw down Iraq and Afgan or institute a draft. LABF how old are you again?
