View Full Version : Just for laughs...Cutler's backup

I know it's early to be talking about it, but it'll give us something to talk about til Monday.

So let's assume that Shanahan makes Cutler the starter in 2007 and Plummer is traded or released. If that happens, who would you like to see backing up Cutler?

In my opinion, it needs to be a veteran. I know Mock was crying for us to draft Drew Tate to be Cutler's backup, but that don't make any sense to me. Shanny seems to like Jeff Garcia, and I think he'd be a good presence to have around Cutler. We could make another push for Gus Frerotte.

What do you guys think?

Daunte Culpepper might be available. ROFL!

Of course, I've been a Jesse Palmer homer, but he's a #3 at best.

If Garcia still wants to play, and is up for grabs, I say we nab him.

It's too early to say whop will be available. If anyone has a list of UFA QBs after this season, could you show me/us?

There is only one person that needs to called and now if Grossman continues to play good he might be available. And we all know who he is ;D

I am not serious at all. He is an ok backup and didn't mind him that much when he was here but I would definitley go in another direction.

Griese wouldn't work here for all sorts of chemistry reasons, but as a substitute backup who hopefully only had to play mop up duty and maybe a game or two here and there we could do a lot worse.

He certainly knows the system already :-). Would never happen though. We do need a solid vet for the first two years or so of the Cutler era while developing a younger Kubick kind of guy to be our long term solid back up and future offensive coordinator. :wiggle:

Hook em horns! Texas 14-10 over Oklahoma with 7min left in the 3rd.

... check that Texas 21-10 near end of 3rd.

We could do worse than Griese but there is way way too much water under the bridge for that. Second, I would prefer a backup that is mobile and is scrappy. Chances are when a backup comes in we are in desperate straights. I'm certainly not saying Tate would be an accomplished backup, but it could be possible to try to hide him on the PS. If another team tries to sign him off the PS, all the team has to do is match the offer and the player has to stay on the roster...it doesn't mean he can't be inactive. If Jake leaves, I don't think it's unreasonable at all to bring in a crusty old vet and a young gun.

It's not out of the realm of fantasy that Jake might still be the starter going into next season or willing to redo his contract It's highly doubtfull tho.

Its remotely possible Jake could last one more year, but he'd have to win the SB, or at the very least be a major part of us getting to the big game and not a major reason for us losing it if we do make it that far, for that to be likely.

Tall orders in either case!

He's a pocket passer. I'd rather have someone a little more mobile.

I suspect short of winning the SB Shanny is just hoping Jake plays well enough to bring us a huge fish in a blockbuster trade in the offseason. Combine that with what will hopefully be a top 10 first rounder from Washington (Adrian Peterson anyone?) and our own first round and second round picks and we'd be loaded for Bear to begin the Culter era in sytle.

If Jake can make it through a playoff game without choking, I don't see any reason he couldn't start next season. That said, if my mailman was also my garbage man, I don't see any reason why I couldn't put my cans on the curb any day I wanted.

The only way it could be a top 10 is if Denver packages Washington's pick with other picks since the lowest we can go with Washington is around 20 (according to the trade provisos)

If we can move up for a RB like Peterson we might well pacakge a deal for Tater as well as Plummer and keep Bell and Cobbs or some other FA RB as our 2007 adn beyond running attack.

I doubt Tatum would be a happy camper if he goes back to #2 so unless he proves he is the long term answer at RB I could see us going high for a true Maroney-like stud like Adrian Peterson or one of the other top guys and have a second year and more seasoned and mature Mike Bell and someone else backing him up.

If we get Washinton's first rounder plus our own, and have Tater and Plummer to wheel and deal with to move up or down and add more or less picks we should come out with a couple of real gems!

I could see us addign a top RB, DE or DT and a saftey between all thse trade and draft options plus FA. We might well wheel and deal to begin resahping our O-line to protect for a more pocket passing game too, even though we wont stray too far from our current over all offense. Just more emphasis on the pass from the pocket since Cutler can do that so well.

I hope he continues to prove hes an every down and late season back. The jury will definitely still be out, no matter how well he plays now, until he can really show up from late November onward.

If he can't prove himself to be an everydown back, we'll move him and get someone else in FA or the Draft. At least, that's what I'd do...

I believe the deal was that we may swap picks. Not that we get an extra one in the first.

David Garrard if he's available. Barring that Kyle Orton. Both have experience on Sunday but haven't impressed teams enough to get starting jobs. We won't find many backups who can immitate Cutler's combination of arm strength and mobility, so getting someone who can approximate one of the two (Garrard - legs, Orton - arm) would keep that dimension of our playbook in tact.

Kyle Orton is mediocre, but he didn't make game-losing mistakes last year.

No, I mean *real* "not choking..." Not actually choking but having the defense bail you out. If Jake could do that in the playoffs, I wouldn't be suprised for Shanahan to keep him around for another season. I'd be fine with it. I've just wanted to see something from him in the post season that's worth believing in. So far, nothing... Unless you count showing a lot of heart in between interceptions.

But we should worry about that then. We've got Baltimore this week, and I see no reason to look past them. It would be great to see Jake have a big day against their big defense.
