The Clinton Portis characters are back.

Clinton Portis arrived at his weekly media session at Redskins Park dressed up as a character he named "Dolemite Jenkins."

The character looked like "Napoleon Dynamite," from the movie of the same name about an alienated teen-ager who tries to get a friend voted as class president.

Portis wore a black curly wig, a white T-shirt with the words "Vote For Santana," skin-tight Wrangler jeans and black rubber boots.

Portis spoke with a soft voice. He said he was lobbying for Santana Moss to be voted for NFC Offensive Player of the Month.

Portis arrived at his media session just as assistant head coach-defense Gregg Williams was holding court among reporters outside Redskins Park. The television cameras were instantly drawn to the Redskins' running back in his get-up.

Portis's first word as Dolemite Jenkins?

"Gosh," he said.

Then he said: "Santana offers you his protection."

Those are both lines, or variations, from the movie.

Last year, Portis made a habit of dressing up for his media sessions every week, but he had held off this season until Thursday.

Portis dressed up as Southeast Jerome last year, right before the Redskins played the Giants at the Meadowlands. That's when his characters started to take on a life of their own, complete with a storyline that evolved through the course of the season.

Asked on Thursday why he chose to dress up, he said: "Because Southeast Jerome came up missing at the same time last year. I'm looking for him. I have to find him. Someone has to have seen something."

Where would he look? "In New York City? Right by the Statue of Liberty."

Asked what his teammates thought of his characters, he replied: "I think they seem to enjoy it. At least I do."

Wide receiver Brandon Lloyd was among Redskins who got their first taste of Portis's characters.

"That was good," Lloyd said, laughing. "We were doing impressions of Napoleon Dynamite all during training camp. He could have done a little better on his impression, though."

Added Moss: "I just like seeing him dress up. He does some things that no one would think of doing."

I think there is a difference between cutting up, being the class clown and being a pr**k. I think Portis and Shannon Sharpe fall in the first group.

There is absolutely nothing wrong or illegal for playing the comedian. To my knowlege, he's never been in trouble with the law at Miami, Denver or Washington.

He's not capturing some weird "failed suicide attempt" for attention. Give the guy some slack. His characters are never threatening.

Again, he's never been busted busting caps outside a strip club or vomiting out of a window. I honestly don't understand the hatred some people have for him.

Eventhough I don't find his stuff funny at all, he is just doing it for fun and it doesn't bother me as much as others making spectacles of themselves.

Agreed...

I know I'd think it was funny if he was still in Denver and doing this.

That is a very good analogy. Shannon always had a big mouth, but ne never verbally assoulted any plyer or coach or announcer to my knowlege. Even the "Belt" was just clowning. Some players take drugs, Portiis' drug is being a clown. What is wrong with that?

I must admit. I think this is pretty amusing.

Crucify me, but I always liked Clinton Portis. I'm glad we did the trade, only because I think we came out on top with it. But I would take Portis on my team all day.

He's just trying to market himself.

I hope Portis rots in Hell.

But thats just because I bought his jersey only to see him traded not two months later. He owes me 75 bucks.

I still wish there was a way we could have kept him and still got Bailey.

Yeah, our running game has been HORRIBLE since he's been gone.

Well thanks for putting words into my mouth. I just liked having ONE guy as the RB that could handle the job pretty much on his own instead of constantly having to count on two or three different backs and hope that one of them can emerge as the full time starter, which never really happens.

But anyway.

Portis the player - I am glad he is gone. However, I think some of those characters - this one included - are pretty funny and amusing. But then again, I am pretty easily amused.

"Gosh, freakin people need to lighten up!"

There is a big difference in having a good running game and having a great/elite back. I was all in favor of the trade but I would love to have Portis back or someone of his calibre instead of plugging in one rb after another. Portis is a top 5 back in the league.

I guess that depends who you talk to. Some people buy into it, some people don't. I don't buy into any of the sh!t portis has ever done.
