Cutler in no rush to start like Leinart, Young

At least the Broncos believe they have the best of the Big Three rookie quarterbacks in Jay Cutler.

The other two, Vince Young and Matt Leinart, are now starting quarterbacks in the NFL. Cutler still hasn't taken his first NFL snap as he's watched Jake Plummer direct every offensive play for the Broncos this season.

"It's a long process," Cutler said. "Hopefully we're all in the league a long time and have successful careers, but I'm in no rush right now. I'm sitting and watching Jake and hopefully we'll keep winning."

Young, the No. 3 draft pick out of Texas, made his starting debut last weekend for Tennessee. Leinart, the No. 10 pick out of Southern California, will make his first NFL start Sunday for Arizona against Kansas City.

Young and Leinart are playing for teams that have a combined 1-7 record. Those teams are playing for the future. Cutler, the No. 11 pick out of Vanderbilt, is playing for the 2-1 Broncos, who will carry championship
aspirations into their game Monday night against the Baltimore Ravens at Invesco Field at Mile High. Apparently, it's the performance of the respective teams, not the play of the respective quarterbacks, that has determined which highly touted rookie quarterback plays first. Otherwise, Cutler might have been the first to showcase his skills. He easily had the best preseason of the three, posting a 108.3 quarterback rating. Leinart recorded a 95.5 rating while Young had an unimpressive 69.1 rating.

"We're a good team, we're trying to get to the Super Bowl this year," Cutler said. "Jake is experienced, he knows what's going on and right now I'm just watching and learning."

Return to nowhere

And the Broncos' returners shall be last.

In the 32-team NFL, the Broncos rank 32nd in kickoff returns with a 13.1-yard average - 6.3 yards behind 31st-place Philadelphia.

"That can be changed," said Quincy Morgan, the Broncos' newly signed kick returner, who had just one muffed return for 12 yards in his debut at New England on Sept. 24. "All it takes is one good return. You've got to remember, the defense has been so good, we haven't had many chances to return."

Indeed, the Broncos have attempted just seven kickoff returns, one more than San Diego, which has the league's fewest returns.

But how then to explain the Broncos' punt returns? Again, they rank 32nd, this time with an embarrassing 1.0 yard per return.

"We've been terrible," said Broncos punt returner Darrent Williams. "These first three games, teams have been trying to kick me into a corner. I've got to be more patient. I had a lot of early success last year. I've just got to calm down."

On paper, Baltimore figures to have a huge advantage in the return game Monday as B.J. Sams ranks second in kickoff returns (30.9 average) and ninth in punt returns (10.8).

Sams was arrested Tuesday for driving under the influence, his second such offense in 14 months. And while Sams may eventually serve a four-game suspension for violating NFL policy, he is expected to play Monday.

The Broncos drafted Williams in the second round last year primarily as a return specialist, but after quickly emerging as a starting corner, his role was reduced to just handling punts. He averaged 8.7 yards a punt return last year, but has just 4 yards on five returns this year.

Williams was so desperate in the Broncos' last game at New England, he tried returning a punt from his 6-yard line, only to retreat until he was nearly tackled for a safety.

"I didn't say a word to him," said Broncos coach Mike Shanahan. "Here's a guy trying to make a play - and I'll take that any day of the week as opposed to a guy who runs away from the ball. We just have to keep working at it. We know what Darrent's capable of doing. He's got a big-time upside. And Quincy's done it before. Hopefully, he'll do it for us."

Footnotes

On the injury report, Broncos running back Cedric Cobbs (ankle) is out for the Baltimore game and defensive end Courtney Brown (knee) is doubtful. The Ravens have two significant defensive players, Terrell Suggs (thigh) and Adalius Thomas (neck), listed as questionable. ... How tough is the Ravens' defense? In four games, it has allowed just three points - count 'em, three - in the second half.

Whether it's really how he feels or it's the company line, Cutler knows that Jake needs to be in there to give the Broncos the best chance at playing football in February...

Was I imagining things, or did I see Williams on the kickoff team? (Not receiving, but our kickoff coverage team.)

I swear I saw 27 in on a tackle on a kickoff.

The kid's probably smart enough to know his career is going to benefit from being able to take in the system slowly. He also probably sees the goofs in our stands booing our own QB at halftime of the 2nd game, despite his .750 winning percentage.... and figures he might do better to wait until he's totally up to speed.

Like I've said before... if Cutler starts out like Elway did, he's screwed. The modern football fan has no patience, and little understanding of the larger football picture, so the QB is always the whipping boy. I believe John took a few seasons to throw more TDs than INTs. Does anyone here honestly think that Denver fans/media would stand for that?

Dude would be on the first bust out of town with "BUST" stamped on his forehead.

I hope we get to develop this guy properly.

Both of those guys are real good but its Bart Scott we need to look out for. He is very fast and has had a great year so far getting to the Qb.

You hit that nail on the head. Scott is the best LB on that team right now.

well, if cutler was on a team that sucks and is struggling, then he would be playing. I would rather be on a good team and learn from the sidelines. Rivers did that with the Chargers. You can suck in alot of information watching others and listening.

Suggs is their best pass rusher and Thomas is a hybrid LB/DE who is affective at both positions. It would be huge if either one of those guys isn't ready to go!

he shouldn't be... he is on a career path much like Donovin McNabb and Carson Palmer. It is truly hard to complain about that.

I don't know too much about the guy but you're right, it seems like he's made a lot of plays already. That whole defense concerns me. I can't see how we're going to put together long drives. What would really help the offense is if we somehow got a short field, either through generating turnovers (which we haven't done), or by our return team (who suck).

Cut is gonna be a great QB, but as Popps said, lets bring himn along slowly. Give him this year, then lets see where he is at next year.

And I hope Q can give us a boost in the return game, we gotta be able to start better than the 18 every time.

Rocket Man continues to impress me with his incredible poise and maturity. He fully understands this team is a contender, not Arizona or Tennessee. I guarantee that eash week he is a sponge, soaking up more and more experience and understanding of what is arguably the most complex system and playbook in the NFL. Jake once said that it takes a full 5 seconds just to bark out his plays in the huddle. You could probably read the Bible alot faster than digest that Biblical playbook.

Both Jake and Jay know that the kid's day is coming, and Jake has manned up about it. We pulled Jake out of the gutter of Arizona and made him a much better QB. There are probably about a dozen teams that would be interested in him...including Crazy Al, but as we all know, Shanny and Crazy Al are not the best of buddies. I do think a team like Minnesota with an aging Ron Johnson or our good friends Gibbs and Snyder might be interested in a 3rd or 4th rounder for Jake. Jake is a very comical figure that fell into a great situation, and it has probably prolonged his career till he's 38 or so. By then, Portis and Crazy Al will be fighting over ownership of the walker.

Cutler is an impressive young man...ditch the bangs tho. No mohawks tho please...

One last thing...instead of pouting, Jake invited Jay over for some barbq. He will just smile and wave IMO...it will surprise me if he gives the flying finger as he leaves. He's had a pretty good run.

I didn't like the "Do you hope Jake gets an owie thread" at all.

If Jake wasn't on the back end on a back loaded contract, we keep him. Why not spend that 6-7 million to snag another impact lineman? I have nothing against keeping Jake one more year either...that's all up to the coaches. I just know Jake's contract escalates dramatically this year. Getting Drew Tate out of Jake would be optimum IMO. His beat down against OSU when he was beaten to a pulp will probably drop him.

Jay fully understands situation. From what I have read previously, he seems to fitting in with others and gaining their trust, but he has a ways to before that happens.

This is all hunky dory, but I do confess to the tinest urge to see what Cutler would do with this team, should Jake happen to suffer a slight boo-boo. Maybe just a quarter or a half of Cutler time, as a taste.

Is Rivers that much better for it? I don't see it. He could have got the Chargers into field goal position but failed against the Ravens. He has thrown interceptions and Marty is forced to run it 75% of the time because of Rivers lack of experience. Cutler will go through it to. I just don't think waiting will help.
