Kircus sneaks up on foes
Receiver making an impact for Denver

ENGLEWOOD — Rod Smith has earned the respect of the league. Javon Walker has the league's attention again.

David Kircus doesn't have either at this point.

Which is just fine with the sandwich-maker turned Denver Broncos No. 3 wide receiver.

"I think there's a lot of teams out there that don't know about me. They don't know the kind of ability I have and the type of routes I can run," Kircus said. "That's a bonus for me and a bonus for the team because they can put me in the slot and different areas on the field, and I don't think teams are going to look at me as a threat.

"That gives me the chance to get one-on-one a lot of the time and get open against the linebacker or safety or even some of the corners."

Kircus made two receptions against New England on back-to-back plays — a 12-yard catch on third-and-7 and a 24-yard catch that set up a Jason Elam field goal for the first points of a game the Broncos won 17-7.

A week earlier, during overtime against Kansas City, Kircus made a 14-yard catch on second-and-9 from the Denver 17-yard line. The Broncos would win the game on the drive with an Elam field goal.

The performances are certainly not creating a buzz in the fantasy football world, but Kircus has been a key component in getting Jake Plummer and the passing game on track after a slow start.

"I think he has really stepped up. He has made some plays when it has counted," Denver head coach Mike Shanahan said. "You never know for sure what a guy is going to do through preseason. You evaluate them and you get a chance to see if he makes plays when the lights are on. He has made a number of plays when the lights have been on. I'm very impressed."

Kircus helped feel the void at receiver during the preseason when Ashley Lelie was holding out and rookie Brandon Marshall was hurt. He led the team in receiving during the exhibition games but was catching footballs thrown by super rookie Jay Cutler.

Same story for rookie tight end Tony Scheffler and even running back Tatum Bell. Throw in the fact that Walker and Smith played sparingly and it's no surprise that the passing game didn't have much spirit in St. Louis.

"We've done well in practice together. Jake has found me in practice in situations where we've had third-and-long and things like that. He knows I can come up with the catch," Kircus said. "It's just getting the chance to get out there. The more we're out there together the more comfortable we're going to be. Like him and Rod, they've got a good chemistry going and they've done it a few years together."

Smith (94 yards) and Walker (250 yards, two touchdowns) each have 11 receptions to lead the team. Kircus is third among receivers with four receptions for 62 yards (15.5 per).

Come on, FEEL THE VOID!!! Wait... is that even physically possible?

Kircus is 6-2 and has excellent speed from what I read. 4.4 I think. We have some kids in the wings, and it's theirs for the taking. It will be interesting to see who steps up. I think several will.

Hopefully, we can turn our attention in next years draft to other areas, maybe a true franchise back or DE. I'm thinking Courtney is just plain done with that knee. There isn't anything left to do on it. They should of left it alone IMO. A "clean up" seems to have been a "mess up" but who knows.

Kircus will only get better if he stays healthy.

I think so, but I believe you put on a rubber glove beforehand. ;D

Speaking of rubber gloves, don't remind me. My doctor felt my void but it sure didn't feel like a void to me.

I have met some women that seem to have a bat cave however.

When we first brought Kircus aboard I thought, this guy is camp fodder but glad I was wrong. Man I'm really starting to like what he can do.

Btw did you all know that we have no one on our receiving corp that is under 6'0" tall. Rod is shortest at 6'0" even I think everyone else is at least 6' 2" or taller.

void Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[void] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation,

–adjective
useless(see Lelie, Ashley); ineffectual; vain.
devoid; destitute (usually fol. by of): a life void of meaning.
without contents; empty.
without an incumbent, as an office.

–noun an empty space; emptiness;: He disappeared into the void.(see Atlanta Falcons)

;D Just kidding I actually liked Lelie and wished he would've stayed as a #3 wr, but you can't help but not laugh at how his situation went down.

Complete and utter idiot. It's going to be amusing watching Ms. Lilly signing a contract for vet minimum.

Kircus is, and will likely be for some time be a constant, nagging reminder of exactly how completely incompetent the Lions' Matt Millon really is.

Yeah it is rather ironic, I like Ashely too but sure didn't care for the way he handled his situation.

Given his background, its not surprising he's a humble guy. Almost too humble. He should have spoken up more when the coaches in Detroit punished him for daring to outplay Millen's first round busts.

It's going to be amusing when Mike Williams, Roy Williams and Charles Rogers all watch Kircus in the playoffs.

We are better at pulling players out of the gutter than drafting, at least before the last couple years.

He talks a good game, though. Seems like a great succesor to Wayne Fontes.

He's making some noise now. Looks like he's fitting in pretty good with the team. I think DB's around the league will be taking notice of him now. But with Javon, Rod, Sheff, a running game, what can they do? This is starting to look like a nice O. It's a pick your poison situation for D's, seems to me.

I am impressed how we have quietly retooled the offense. Next year we fill in a few final weak links at DL and maybe RB and OL. I would love to snag Gallery in a couple years. I just know he hates it there...I don't know if he's tanking it, that seems out of character, but man...he's been horrible...he might come pretty cheap. We can rebuild his confidence IMO. What a craphole that place is. It's like a warm weather Gulag.

Im excited for Kircus. A sure handed WR who has burst out of his cuts.

Cant ask for much more.

Kircus needs a few helpings of Big Money's mom's ribs. He does kinda remind me of Floppy Ed.

We need them to become a second farm club along with Cleveland.

Anyone else think that Kircus might be starting alongside Javon next season if Rod hangs up the cleats?
I mean he is the same type of player as Rod and could step in on the field, and man down the position.
Don't get me wrong, i am just saying he could take over for Rod, but he will never be the man Rod is in Denver.

I'm a big Kircus fan, but if that happens, the Bronco receiving corp is not nearly as deep as we had hoped.

Why? Is it so hard to believe that maybe Kircus could really be that good?
