Defensive lapses hamper Chiefs
Jake Plummer tossed three TD passes to lead the Broncos over Kansas City, which followed its opening-week loss to Cincy with more defensive lapses. The Chiefs did a respectable job of bottling up the Denver running game, but put little pressure on Plummer and allowed Tatum Bell to get loose for a rushing touchdown and a 21-yard receiving TD on a swing route out of the backfield. Denver took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a Plummer toss to Javon Walker and never trailed the entire game.
Kansas City was able to get Larry Johnson untracked, as he found the end zone twice and ground out 109 yards rushing. Meanwhile, Damon Huard did an admirable job at quarterback for the Chiefs in place of injured Trent Green, throwing for 269 yards. Offense wasn't the problem for the Chiefs, who approached 400 yards on the day; as usual, it was a sieve-like defense that takes the bulk of the blame for their defeat.
