View Full Version : The Chefs: Our Biggest Rival???

So my aunt was visiting from Kansas City this last weekend. We got to talking about the upcoming game and she said that she was glad she was visiting last week instead of this week since she would probably get some grief from Broncos fans since the Chiefs are our “biggest rival”. I told her I felt that the Raiders were our biggest rival with the Chiefs running a distant second. I also assumed that the Raiders were the Chiefs biggest rival since they had big games against each other going back to the 70’s. She assured me that while they don’t care for the silver and black, the Broncos are both hated and envied by Chiefs fans making the Broncos game at Arrowhead THE GAME of the year.
So am I off here? Are the Chiefs our biggest rival? Maybe I just assumed that EVERYONE hates the Raiders unless you are from the Bay Area or a gang-banger.
Help me out here.

No, they're not.

As of right now, I'd kinda have to say yes. Oakland has been pretty sorry recently, so they are more like our whipping boy than a rivalry. The Chiefs have put some competitive teams out there, so we are fighting with them for the division most of the time.
Under normal circumstances though, the Raiders would be the bigger rivalry.

The Raiders and Chiefs aren't competitive, so, by definition, they cannot be our rivals.

Well Raiders were the biggest rivals for years because they were who the Broncs needed to beat. Chiefs have tried unsuccessfully to fill that role the last few years and are now headed for a long down cycle. i suspect this time next year we will be talking about the bolts as our biggest rival.

The Chiefs have made a push the last few years, they just haven't done the job.

I'd have to say the Chargers are our biggest division rival. The Chiefs suck and the Raiders swallow. San Diego actuall has a competitive team.

Gimme a break. We've split the season series three times in a row. That's a rivalry.

The Chiefs were better than the Chargers last year. Heck, did the Chargers beat you? No.

Well I was referring to the overall record, not the head to head one.

I don't buy that either. Oakland has sucked for three years. I still hate them as much as ever. It's going to be painful when we eventually lose another game to them.

You need to expand your horizons and get out more, Bob. The Chefs and Duh Raiduhs aren't the only teams in the league...

IMO, they are, indeed, the most hated. I remember the dark times when, if we beat duh raiduhs even ONCE, it was a successful season.
But rival? See the definition I posted above...

OK, just to nail this shut - what made you giggle the most this last weekend, seeing the Chefs get beaten and Trent Green's head bounce off the grass or the Faders getting shutout in the Black Hole by the bolts? For me it's easy, seeing the Raiders get stomped at home made me completyly giddy! It was a blast seeing all those sad black and silver painted faces! I was also glad to see the Chiefs lose from a divisional standpoint, but I actually felt sorry for Trent Green. He's a good guy and a talented quarterback. I can't remeber ever feeling sorry for the Raiders. I hope they lose every game this season!
As far as the Bolts, I'll give you that they are our biggest competition, but I don't see rival at all. They were rivals for us back when Fouts and Air Coryell were unbeatable, but beyond that, nah. If we use that history to call the Chargers our biggest rivals, then we have to throw the Seagulls in there as well - remember the games against Zorn and Largent in the Thunderdome?

based on that horse **** it sounds to me that Pittsburgh and Baltimore are your biggest rivals........but, if you aske them, they would say you haven't successfully filled the role.

As of right now the Chargers are it.... The chefs look to be near cellar dwellers and the Raiders... well... they might be worse than i thought (and i guessed 4-12)

These things ebb and flow, currently I would consider the Chiefs the number one rival followed by the Faiders and then the Chargers. A rivalry isn't only about the series record, it's about history, bad blood, tradition, proximity, etc. KC is closer, their fans are in our face more, the games have been more high charged, etc. For me it's a no brainer, Chiefs for sure. The Fade are a shadow of their former self. The Chargers have only been respectable the last couple years, that rivalry needs to grow.

It varies. You can pretty much throw a hat over all the rivalries, they flow and fluctuate. A lot depends on how high the stakes are. Then you have the 'grudge' factor. The fans and players have a different view. Elway said for the players it was the Raiders, for the fans the Chiefs. It doesnt matter...the AFC West is made for fistfights.

I hate the Raiders more and I got more joy from yesterdays spanking then the Chiefs loss this weekend.
If we look at the over all organization Record the Chiefs have the edge on us with the exception of the playoffs and Superbowls.
Regular Season: Chiefs Vs Broncos 51-40-0
Postseason: Chiefs Vs Broncos 0-1 :~ohyah!:
KC season sweeps: 15 times (Last: 2000)
Denver season sweeps: 10 times (Last: 2002)
Longest KC winning streak: 11 (1964-69)
Longest Den winning streak: 8 (1976-79)
I dunno, I guess I hate the Raiders more because of thier fans. I believe Chief fans are in the same boat with this topic.

I personally dislike the Chiefs more than the Raiders. Hard to say why, exactly. I know as a Broncos fan I'm supposed to hate the Raiders, but I'm suprisingly indifferent towards them. Maybe it's the Chiefs ambiguously gay red pants that makes me dislike them. I'm bull-like. Charge. And we always seem to have ridiculous games in KC.

I think you are right. It is hard not to get caught up in the who might be the biggest threat vs. rivalry thing

KC is a close second tho.

It's the Raiders. It was very entertaining watching the Raiders get their ass stomped. That was entertainment right there. The Chiefs losing just doesn't have that same feeling.

Thanks to Shanahan (and the Raiders sucking so badly), the Broncos-Raiders matchups can hardly be seen as a "rivalry". The Chiefs, on the other hand, have overtaken the Raiders as main rivals. We've consistently beaten KC at our house and vice versa. That's a true rivalry. Besides, there has been UNBELIEVABLE hatred and jealousy among KC fans for Broncos fans since Elway came along. The Chiefs ARE our biggest rival for those reasons...
