Khatami told Time he got "really upset" with President George W. Bush's designation of Iran as part of an "axis of evil" and he praised America as a "great and big country."
Gee, you mean there are moderates within the Muslim world which we could be working to support in order to drive a wedge between them and the radical fundamentalists, thereby sapping the support of terrorists? I wonder if that policy might work? Naaaaaah. Let's play whack-a-mole.

Here's more about the prev. president of iran:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohammed_Khatami (don't like the source, do your own work).
Anyway he was pretty moderate, and actually he seemed to cater more to the pro democracy and western culture that the women and youth wanted. it seems that the new president was elected only last year - and after 2k1 - our actions in iraq & afgh probably prompted a more hardline old school canidate to win. (much like the reelection of "W" did for 2004, and well you had bush and bush (Kerry is one and the same).
Good read wags, thanks - i didn't know much about this guy before and he seems to have/had a good idea on where iran should have been moving to/towards.

Nothing there that conflicts much, that I can see.
The point is that Khatami's remarks that may indicate to some "Gee, he's not such a bad guy" are only a small part of what he said, and other things he said were reprehensible.

What's the deal? There's no distinction between this guy and the little hitler? And don't give me human rights, please.
Moreover, and back to the thread's premise, isn't there a distinciton between suicide bombers from hezbollah to hamas and to fatah ... and to Iran. I'm not aware of even the little hitler supporting suicide bombings. Maybe he is, but those seem more "sunni."
