View Full Version : The Ultimate Hypocrisy?

Hi, gang --
I came across something the other day that I thought interesting, and decided to share it here. :-)
The Puritans, who were in the early 1600s a rising and growing fundamentalist sect in England, complained to King James I that the Catholic Douay Bible was corrupt. They felt they needed a new version, a Protestant Bible. James also firmly believed that the Bible should be available to all people, not just the clergy, and commissioned the translation. The King James Version was first published in 1611.
What many people don't know is that King James was queer as a three-dollar bill.
When James was crowned, before long, the most popular joke in London was that "Elizabeth was King, now James is Queen!".

Should be interesting to hear the Christian right's spin on this.

Spin what? The king smoked pole and commissioned a translation. Bully for the king on both counts.

Ah, so the spin is "homosexuality isn't a sin when one of our own is involved."

Just another liberal attack on Christianity. Wish they would go after islam with the same zeal, but I'm not counting on it.

The left loves to bad mouth Christianity, but demands we all respect and tolerate all other religions. Have to love the world they live in, where hypocrisy reigns supreme and they have appointed themselves God.

Hypocrisy is the only thing the two parties have in common.

Yea, they're all up in arms over some "innocent" Iraqi's dieing yet have no problem with slaughtering thousands of babies through abortion! Talk about hypocrites

I'm against killing innocent Iraqis and slaughtering babies. I'm also against joining church and state. It didn't take long for the Puritans to screw things up as badly as the taliban. This blessing in disguise helped our forefathers create the closest to perfect country in this world's history. We have to keep all religion out of politics if we want to remain free.

Those innocent Iraqis killed were a result of collateral damage in time of war. The intentionally aborted American babies were killed as a result of democrat policies.

OK, my turn....
That 16 cell zygote was was surgically extracted while those 1,000's of innocent children were slaughtered due to republican policies.
See how easy that is ;D

Just another liberal attack on Christianity.
Nope.
Someone pointed out another inconvenient fact (a fact which undoubtedly makes an openly anti-gay person like you uncomfortable) i.e., that King James was a homosexual, and now you're playing your usual game of "attack the messenger."
Wish they would go after islam with the same zeal, but I'm not counting on it.
You mean you wish everyone else would adopt your openly bigoted, anti-Muslim views and attempt to frame this war as a war on Islam instead of a war on terrorism?
Good luck with that. :pity:

Ah, so the spin is "homosexuality isn't a sin when one of our own is involved."
Well, no, it's not really that simple.
It's just that I've got my own sins to worry about. Once I get all of my own sins behind me (and I never will, of course), I'll finally have enough free time to worry about whether and how someone else is sinning.
Look, it's not my job to identify and correct sin. That's the job of the individual and the Holy Spirit. I'm the last person who should interrupt that conversation.
I'm in favor of gay marriage for several reasons, a few of them because of my religion, a few more because of the form of government I support, but the best reason I have for supporting gay marriage is that Jesus told us that it's our role to love each other. I'm very cautious about stepping on that advice, especially when we're talking about people who, well, love each other.
Hey, if it turns out that I've erred on the side of accepting a controversial aspect of love, so be it. I'd defend that in front of God Himself.

This obviously sets you apart (WAY apart) from just about every other evangelical in America (and on this board, to be sure.)

I'm guessing that you're correct in assuming that I hold and voice a minority view.

He called me "liberal." Go figure.
The greatest irony of life is that I have become the person I would once have denounced. Just for the record, I was at one time a proud Reagan Republican and a born-again Baptist. I believed the whole shtick about trickle-down voodoo economics, winning the Cold War against the original Evil Empire, "go forth and spread the Word," the Star Wars defense, nuke a gay whale for Jesus -- the whole nine yards.
That lasted until I, and much of the rest of the country, began to see the real-term consequences of the policies put into action.
These days I count myself as more libertarian than anything else. It's worth remembering that Thomas Jefferson and George Washington were the Original American Progressives -- so much so that TJ (not Taco John) founded the University of Virginia as a free institution of higher education.
Reagan's greatest accomplishment before becoming President? Ending the status of the University of California system as free to state residents. That, right there, highlights the difference between liberals and conservatives.
I find that I do have some points of common interest and agreement with liberals and progressives, especially when it comes to figuring out what in the bloody hell is happening behind closed doors in the Bush White House. At least with Bill Clinton we knew it was a simple act of consensual oral sex. For the Bush White House, it's 98% of Americans getting screwed -- without our consent. The bottom line at the Bush White House is the same as any other corporate financial report: the bottom line. The profits. If you want to know what's going on in DC, it's very simple: follow the money. Who it comes from, where it goes, and who gets more.
I haven't yet spent any time going after Islam with the same zeal because I'm focusing my efforts on the greater threat to Traditional American Values. When Osama bin Laden poses as great a threat as Dick Cheney and Jerry Falwell, I'll be right there focusing on him too.

What we're those innocent people on 9/11 then? I assume we can chalk them up to 'collatarel damage' right?
I don't often say this: But to callously write off the death of THOUSANDS of innocent people makes you one seriously twisted excuse for a human being.
Turning someones wife or child into collateral damage...just sick.
