I'm currently reading "Looming Towers." The beginning of the book details how one agent (Daniel Coleman) was assigned to Alec Station (under Michael Scheuer - the head of the operation) in 1996 with orders to specifically track OBL. For ten years, this section has specifically targeted OBL and Zawahiri.

I heard on NPR yesterday that the CIA has now disbanded the unit.

Michael Scheuer, a former senior C.I.A. official who was the first head of the unit, said the move reflected a view within the agency that Mr. bin Laden was no longer the threat he once was.

Mr. Scheuer said that view was mistaken.

"This will clearly denigrate our operations against Al Qaeda," he said. "These days at the agency, bin Laden and Al Qaeda appear to be treated merely as first among equals."

huh? Didn't the CIA get the memo that AQ & Bin Laden just re-released a greatest hits tape claiming they did 9-11? I mean so close to election time too.

I better check with Emmanual Goldstien on this one.

Whether or not he's "no longer the threat he once was" isn't the only issue.

How about the fact that, according to the bush misadministration, Bin Laden is the man responsible for planning the 9/11 attacks?

Don't these assclowns feel any sense of urgency to bring him to justice?

The thing is, assuming that bin Laden is still hiding in the mountains between Afhgani and Pakistan, it wouldn't take loads of CIA intelligence analysts and agents to catch the guy - merely boots on the ground - U.S. Army Infantry and U.S Marines. The real question is - why aren't massive amounts of soldiers being diverted from elsewhere to resume the huge manhunt in the border region of Paki/Afghanistan to find this ****er?

Sort of like the way you were no doubt pissed when the house repugs stepped on Clinton's d*ck everytime he tried to get CT legislation passed that probably could have prevented the 9/11 attacks?

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
