Paul Craig Roberts: 'The war is lost'

The Pentagon's latest quarterly "progress" report to Congress on Iraq is a grim tale of a lost war. The Pentagon told Congress what Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and propaganda organs such as Fox "News" never tell the American public, namely:

(1) The Sunni-based insurgency remains "potent and viable" despite spiraling Sunni-Shiite violence and beefed up US forces.

(2) Since the last report three months ago, Iraqi casualties from "sectarian clashes"--the Pentagon's euphemism for civil war--have soared by more than 50 percent.

(3) From May when the new Iraqi government was established until August, the average number of weekly attacks increased sharply to 800.

(4) Since the previous report, Iraqi daily casualties have jumped by 50 per cent from 80 per day to 120 per day. Currently, Iraqis are dying at the rate of 43,800 per year from violence.

The Iraqi government cowers behind the fortified walls of the "Green Zone." On August 31, the Kurds in the north took down the Iraqi flag and replaced it with the Kurdish one. Most of Iraq is ruled by Shiite and Sunni militias. Conflict between them has forced 160,000 Iraqis to flee their homes.

Who is going to tell Bush that the war is lost?

Is Rumsfeld going to tell him?

Is Cheney going to tell him?

How can they tell him after all the bravado and false reports?

This is a delusional administration. Confronted with three major polls showing that two-thirds of Americans oppose the Iraq war, Bush declared that he is staying the course, demonstrating yet again his disdain for common sense and the will of the American people.

If Bush and his neoconservative cabal were judged by their performance they would be ridden out of town on a rail. If a court of law judged their actions, they would walk the plank.

Everything this moronic regime promised about a "cakewalk" war and the ease of pacifying Iraq and turning it into an American puppet democracy has turned to ashes in President Bush's mouth.

Having lost the Iraq war, the neoconservatives are determined to initiate war with Iran.

National security expert John Prados says, "The pattern of manipulation and misuse of intelligence that served the Bush administration in the drive to start a war with Iraq is being repeated today for its neighbor Iran."

It is now established beyond a reasonable doubt that the neocons intentionally cooked up false intelligence in order to justify the invasion of Iraq, an invasion that has resulted in tens of thousands of Iraqi and American casualties, both dead and maimed.

Aggressive wars are themselves war crimes. To intentionally create a false basis for an aggressive war is an act of high treason.

Alarmed by the neoconservative drive to start a war with Iran before the US can extricate itself from the Iraq catastrophe, the CIA firmly declared that any Iranian nuclear weapon is a decade away. This undermines the neoconservatives' urgency to attack Iran now.

Neoconservative fanatics tried to discredit the CIA with a recent report by the House Intelligence Committee Republican staff written by neoconservative Frederick Fleitz, a protege of neocon heavyweight John Bolton, a person active in concocting the false case for war against Iraq. Fleitz alleges that the CIA is a know-nothing agency that lacks the ability to assess Iran's ability to make nuclear weapons.

Neocons also dismiss the findings of the International Atomic Energy Agency, which issued a report on August 31 reaffirming that there is no tangible proof that Iran's nuclear energy program has a military aspect.

The neoconservatives plan to plunge America into war with Iran before they can be held accountable for the lost war in Iraq.

This neoconservative conspiracy against the United States and Iran must be stopped. Neocons must be removed from the government that they have betrayed and held accountable for their crimes.

Before America can preach democracy to the world, we must first rescue American democracy from the Bush regime and re-establish government accountability to the people.

Paul Craig Roberts: 'The war is lost'

I just read a story -- unfortunately I can't find the link. It seems the Brits recently were driven out of one of their command posts in southern Iraq by Shiite forces. They were forced to abandon it.

I have no way to confirm the report. If true, it means things are really unravelling. Southern Iraq has been spared much of the internecine bloodshed because it's almost exclusively Shiite. Clearly the insurgency is no longer a Sunni affair -- and probably it hasn't been for months.

I also read a report that the Kurds have stopped flying the Iraqi flag and are flying their own Kurdish colors. This too is ominous. The country is breaking up. Will the Turks now intervene to prevent a Kurdish state? They've warned all along from the beginning.

It gets worse and worse.

"We Can't Leave" Is Not A Strategy and Why Bush Should Shut Up About Osama

George Bush is back on tour, doing what he does best - fear-mongering. What a pathetic coward this man is. FDR said the "only thing we have to fear is fear itself." Bush is saying we have everything to fear, so vote Republican. It's so obvious, it's painful. Only the most craven cowards still find this persuasive.

But let's break down what he's actually saying. First, he tells us that the boogeyman is still out there, so we should all be very afraid. I don't think Bush should be allowed to talk about Osama bin Laden until he captures him. Every time he speaks about bin Laden, the media should immediately ask him why he hasn't caught the biggest American killer in history.

We sent 36 troops to Tora Bora to get Osama bin Laden when we had him cornered. We sent 150,000 after Saddam Hussein. Why? Because we wanted to get Saddam and we had no interest in getting bin Laden. The proof is in the numbers.

The Bush administration loves the boogeyman. The boogeyman wins elections for them.

Bush should never be allowed to utter Osama's name again until he captures or kills him. Here's a man who said earlier, "I am truly not that concerned about [Osama bin Laden]." Then, why don't you shut up about it?

Bush has the audacity to try to scare us with bin Laden two months before an election when he said in 2002, "I don't know where bin Laden is. I have no idea and really don't care. It's not that important. It's not our priority." How the Democrats and the press let him get away with that is beyond me.

In the same "Islamic caliphate" speech Bush gave yesterday, he said again for the 800th time in a row that we can't leave Iraq because fill in the blank - the terrorists will win, Al Qaeda will rule the world, our way of life will be destroyed, bin Laden will become the mayor of San Jose. Other than being preposterous, this is also not a viable strategy.

"We can't leave" is not a strategy. It doesn't translate to how we are going to win if we stay. It is not a plan. It is an act of desperation. Yes, if we leave there will be trouble, but if we stay it might be double.

Is "we can't leave" the best Bush has got? We can't leave, so we have to stay without any plan for success as civil war in Iraq engulfs our soldiers? That's awful.

Finally, will the Democrats please call the president what he is - a liar. Bush said yesterday in his speech that if we leave Iraq, it will become the capital of an Islamic caliphate. What is he talking about? This is a war between Sunni and Shiite sects indigenous to Iraq. To pretend that this is a war between Al Qaeda and the US is nothing short of a lie.

Anyone and everyone with a shred of knowledge knows this already, so why not call him out on it every time he lies likes this. Even his own Department of Defense has issued an extensive report explaining that this is actually battle between Sunni and Shiite sects and militias in Iraq.

Sometimes reporters in the mainstream media get all hurt and indignant when challenged by bloggers. Well, then do your job! As The Rock would say, "Know your role."

You are supposed to bring the public information and keep the government honest by challenging it with facts. The press should be all over Bush every time he pretends Iraq is a war between Al Qaeda and the US. The press should be all over Bush with his own quotes about how he is "unconcerned" about Osama every time he mentions Osama. And the press should ask him this obvious question: How is "we can't leave" a viable strategy for victory in Iraq?

Can anyone explain the logic of these two statements?

Bush makes one statement, if Iraq is allowed to fall, Al Queda will turn it into a terrorist base of operations.

Then Bush makes another statement, that Bin Laden (the head of Al Queda) is no longer important.
