If I didn't see it with my own eyes
Broncos All-Pro safety John Lynch and I sat at a pub around the corner from his house when an attractive female bartender approached us and began talking about her love: football. She exclaimed that she just had a baby, which unfortunately took her out of playing the game she loves. "Playing football?" I asked. She went on to tell us how it's her life, and sure enough on my fourth or fifth beer she comes back outside where we were sitting armed with a football to prove it. She begged us to come to the parking lot to play catch with her at about 11 p.m.
Absolutely not. No way I was doing this. But off the field Lynch may be the nation's nicest man, so of course he appeased her. It couldn't have been more than a mere two minutes when Lynch came over to the gate and said, "Uh Glaze, you really need to see this. You need to get out here."
The last thing I wanted to do was leave an unarmed beer to fend for itself, but at that point I just had to see what had the NFL's version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde so pumped. When I got out there, I thought he was joking as he and I walked about 40 yards away from this young lady. Remember folks, this isn't some over-sized growth-hormoned wildebeest we're talking about.
No joke, she hikes the ball, takes a Jake Plummer-like three step drop and ... thwaaap! She launches a perfectly thrown spiral that neither one of us were really excited to catch. Then she threw another, then another, then another. Spiral after spiral either smacked our hands or sailed over our heads. She was so good Lynch and I were actually running routes with her as official QB.
Now I'm not saying she's Daniella Marino, but she sure as hell had a better arm than Lynch and I; and I'm pretty sure it wasn't the beer talking. I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it.
Tip-toeing the line
Running back Ron Dayne was still feeling pain in his toe but realized he needed to simply suck it up as best he could in order to make the team.
"It still hurts when I make certain cuts, but I have to deal with it," said Dayne. "There's no time for me to wait anymore."
Dayne's injury may sound small, with it being a toe injury, but both Eddie George and Deion Sanders have told me their toe injuries were the absolute most painful thing either had ever dealt with. They're talking waking-up-in-the-middle-of-the-night pain.
Etc.
The more I talk to Broncos players the more I'm convinced most people don't appreciate just how good Champ Bailey is. He's so fluid out there and covers nearly as good as Deion, but Champ will not shy away from trying to smack someone. As one player said, "He may be the best defensive player some of us have ever seen. He's that good."
