View Full Version : Packers switching to zone blocking

Watching NFL training camp tonight the Packers seemed to have lured away one of Gibbs coaches from Atlanta and the Pack are now scrapping their man blocking switching to zone blocking.

If this continues to spread around the league, it will get much harder to get our usual kind of O-linemen in the future.

Not only that, but someone out there is going to devise a way to STOP IT.

Then everyone will copy them.

By that time, Shanahan will have retired.

I guess Chiefs fans win either way. :D

By the time that happens the Rules committee will have already attached flags to everyone and outlawed tackling all together... (like it seems they're always aiming to do)... then it won't matter anyway....

I'm already predicting that....

Favre retires next year...

We pull off a blockbuster trade for a top pick, player and a jar of green M&M's with the Packers sending Jake to Cheese land in '07.

You heard it here (or rather read it) here first...

Here is mock as Shanahan on that:

"Imitation is the biggest part of flattery. When the WCO I DESIGNED as much as Walsh was imitated, mine still works. Zone blocking is the same thing. You can't control what you can't change and success breeds imitation. It doesn't matter what offense or defense your running, if you can't excecute it properly, it's not worth the paper it's written on."

Why is this some death nell for Denver Boob? We allready have retooled the OL with Hamilton, Myers, Kuper, and potentially Eslinger. We cranked up 240 on a poor Titan team and could of made it worse if we wanted but Shannahan likes Fischer. You don't know anything other than how to to smell our farts, and you seem to love it. It's not a big shortage of smaller OL prospects, it's the ability to teach them the scheme. The weakest link in our line seems to be the right side with Coop and Foster, who doesn't seem to get it...still.

Green Bay is converting to zone blocking and now we won't be able to find draft picks? How damn stupid can you possibly be? wow Boob...that's 3 or 4 teams that use it and most have neanderthal buffalos allready signed. Did it ever occur to you that you have to draft for these people, you can't just make a 350 pound turd into a quick zone blocker?

We are scared...very scared. You should be in the comedy club.

The way Grossman is playing, it would be funny to see Jake wind up in Chicago again displacing the now Journeyman SOB in Chicago.

I wasn't the one who said all the quick linemen would be gone. I merely stated that the more people imitate it, the more people will be working to stop it.

And you can't sit here and say ALL of those linemen are going to pan out as starters.

Like the WCO right Bob? It's like anything else. Imitators shall not advance. Pitt played a style so like Cowher they were literally an extention of him. I don't think Cowher is WCO, not that sure, their strength is hard nosed as Cowhwers chin on D and decent game management from Face Plant.

After 10 plus year of tape on Denver running, NFL Defense coordinators know how to stop it. It comes down to execution of the game plans and right now due to Nalen the Broncos are winning those match-ups

Exactly...like Denver is a one hit wonder rushing the ball. However, what we get in open space, we lose at the goal line because we can't really man up and push and don't really have a "jumbo" package even in our backups. That's why I thought we should try Big Money lead blocking and Mean Mr. Mustard snapping if he's capable. Our goal line O sucks because we can't push at the goal line. That's the fatal flaw. That's why MBell was going over the top. It's so damn obvious. You don't think he would of preferred to just prance into the end zone other than risk a fumble in a Marcus Allenesque leap? Twice? I did see that he was REALLY protecting the ball but when you do that man your vulnerable. He could of chugged into the line and been stuffed and instead launched. That's some serious balls, just very dangerous unless he really protects the ball.

Mock you're right Cooper and Foster got owned on first couple attempts on MBell first TD.

And those our our big OL's. After fumbling last week, it took some brass balls for Mike Bell to launch not once, but twice, risking EVERYTHING. I only saw highlights twice on ESPN and they were, as usually, incredibly limited. However, it seemed like those plays were designed to go behind Coop and Foster and M. Bell when behind Nalens seal and did a Marcus Allen LAUNCH ...TWICE.

Put in Warren to plow the road for christ sake at FB. We did it once last year and he pancaked a DT and it was a waltz. He loved it. I don't get it. he doesn't need to carry it. Just hammer someone. I have all the answers. Ha! Anyone remember that play in last years preseason? Plowing the road was an understatement.

What you say about our present ability to push the pile near the goal line is exactly correct. However, during the SB years with a similar sized OL, we were very capable near the goal line with Zim, Schlereth, Nalen, Jones and TD. Much better than we are now. Our OL then is just that much better than the present group.

We went off right tackle behind Carlisle and Foster for the touchdown that made it 21-3. Its true, though, an undersized zone blocking line is always going to struggle moving people off the ball at the goalline.

Chris Kuper is going to develop into the kind of road grader you're looking for, Mock. He totally destroyed his man when we went through the 4 hole on the touchdown that made it 35-3.

I thought Pears had a very solid game also.
