View Full Version : Watching Leinhart

I'm catching the Bronco game at midnight. so AZ is on for me now. Matt is looking good. He's delivered the ball well..even when he got drilled. This is on his first series..and is a 2 minute drill........he scrambled for 16. Ansante almost picked him off, but the reciever knocked it away. Leinhart has to scramble again and gets another first down. A couple more passes and he gets AZ in range for 3.

pretty good for 2 days of camp.

he ended up 4 for 11 45 yards passing and 29 yards rushing....he actually did a few audibles...he did alright. Not as good as Cutler's first game...but it preseason. His recievers dropped a feww too

I think he did good on a weeks notice. I can only imagine how good he'll be once he gets comfortable.

awesome hanging out on the Cards board. Such bandwagonish fans its rediculous.

Fans here in AZ for all our teams are fickle.

these 3 will constantly be compared for their entire carrers. mostly leinhart and young because their last game was the national championship

Saw some good things from Leinhart for sure, especially for not being in camp for very long.

Young on the other hand has a lot of work to do.

The last PS game will be Cutler vs Leinert for real, although Denny Green will probably let his first team go against our second team the first half like last year in hopes of instilling a winning attitude to the team in their new stadium.

Had the Pats vs Cards as well and Leinart looked good running that 2 minutes offense just on two practices. I was very impressed with him not wanting to waste a lot of time in the pocket or force the ball so he runs right up the gut for a big run, slides, and then quickly calls time out.

Living here in Card country, I totally agree. Give them 3-4 games and their season will start to bomb, the bandwagon will hit a rutt, they will flush the season :flush: and 2007 draft talk will start.

This new stadium here is a total waste of money. What kind of reward is that for their poor performance? The Broncos at least earned it with 2 Super Bowls.

Arizona is quite different than Denver. First, most in Phoenix are not from here. Like me, we all bring our team loyalties with us. It is hard to even cheer for them at all.

In terms of football, the best fans are in the cold weather cities. I cannot think of a single team in the sunbelt that can compare to teams like the Broncos, Chiefs, Eagles, Pack, etc when it comes to fan loyalty. The only team that comes close is the Cowboys. Yet, I remember when they were bad and their fans where not to be found.

I agree, I thought Leinhart looked good. especially having not had much practice going into the game. He may not have a gun for an arm, but looks like he can make all the throws needed. His mobility was better than expected as well.

It's going to be fun watching the young guns go through their learning curves(Leinart, Cutler, Rivers, etc). We'll see flashes of greatness followed by "what the heck did he throw that one for???" ROFL!

Leinart is smart and he's extremely accurate. That should compensate for his less than impressive physical tools. He's kind of like a really good Brian Griese, without the personality disorder.

Ya know, I always supported the team of the city I lived in. If Denver came to town, naturally I would want Denver to win, but I always figured it was no-class to dis the team of the town where I made my living.

**** that ****. I was born in Burbank in 1964. I didn't invite the dicklicking Raiders to Los Angeles 20 years later and I goddamn sure as hell wasn't going to say a kind word about them when they got there.

Well, that's a whole lot different than say moving to a city with an established team that provides you a living, then punking them as often as you can.

Well, I would agree with that, to an extent. I'm not the kind of guy to kick the local populace while they're down, but I don't want to see a bunch of bandwagoners celebrating if their team is on top, either.

I know a lot of people in LA who are relieved SC didn't beat Texas this year. Mainly because they're tired of the insufferable Trojan fans all over the Southland.

I honestly never cared if the hometown teams - and we lived in Phoenix for a couple years in the mid-90's - wanted to bandwagon. Hell, I supported the Cards all the way, wished them the best of luck every week and all year. I was proud of the natives that supported their team with their backs to the wall when the stadium was half-filled with out-of-towners.

I'll say again, I think it's no-class to move to a city that provides your living, and not push the hometown team.

I must be classless because I bleed Orange and Blue and wouldn't change regardless of where I lived. I refuse to jump on a local banwagon when the team is doing good.

Just curious - do you like the Cards, support them at all? Do you rag on them to friends, colleagues? Do you ridicule them, ridiicule their fans? If they win, do you sneer, if they lose do you take an "I told you so attitude"?

Cito, Arizonians have every right to sneer at the Cardinals organization. Dollar Bill Bidwell rode into their town and acted like a classless clueless prick from day one. Exorbitant ticket prices, repeated threats to move to Los Angeles and an inferior product on the field year after year. Nobody is beholden to Bidwell for anything. Conversely, I can totally understand people enjoying his misfortunes.

I live in Dallas.. and yes I do. I HATE the Cowboys. No.. I LOATHE the Cowboys.

I hate that they bitch EVERY year about how their being screwed by the hall of fame. I hate that their fans show up 15 minutes late and leave 30 minutes early. I hate that they continue to refer to themselves as the 'Yankees of the NFL', when their glory years are decades behind them. I hate that they have one of the smallest stadiums in the NFL, but I can walk up to the ticket counter and buy season tickets TODAY. I hate that these idiots think that every football player in the countries sole goal is to get that stupid star on their helmet.

The best day of my football life (oter than every Bronco win..preseason included) was when T.O. posed on that lame-@$$ star.

Screw the Cowboys

Well, I guess I have to amend my stand a bit to include insufferable places and fans - like Dallas. I was referring to Arizona. And SD, where we also lived in the 80's and 90's. I still like to see those cities have success, they both provided us a good living, good services.

I take a neutral attitude torwards them. I respect people if they say they are cardinal fan because then I know they aren't banwagon fans. I go to a couple games each year and the team gets no support due to all the transplants in the area like me.

Believe me, dude, I'm not going to jam on some diehard fan of a long suffering franchise. In fact, you'll never see me jam on a diehard fan of any franchise, unless they happen to be giant assholes.

I lived in LA when the place was crawling with Raider fans. Some of them were the most knowledgable fans around. Unfortunately, by and large, only Cowboy fans are more clueless about the game than Raider fans. Both franchises are caught up in a lot of extraneous crap that naturally attracts ****heads.

Well, that shows class. Myself, because so many people did not support the Cards, I tried to counter-balance that. I liked the town, loved to death the Sonoran Desert, the monsoons. Unique ecosystem. The family hated it, hid inside all summer.

I was impressed with Leinhart, I expected a disaster after only a week on the team. I also thought he looked a bit more mobile than advertised.

As for supporting the local team, I think the attitude of the fan base has a big influence on that. I supported Cincinnati (as a secondary team of course) when I lived there years back, and the few fans they had were cool people. Now if I go back to visit family, I avoid football discussion, because the morons have taken over. I had to inform people that "their" team had actually played a couple superbowls. San Diego was another one, one of my best friends in the world grew up there, and talked about the bolts constantly, but when I visit now, the bandwagoners are unbearable. I support the Cardw while I'm here though, I think of it like a charitable education for hard luck fans.

Since Slappy and I are in some sort of fragile cease fire that's ultimately doomed, I have to agree with him for now. I think the Griese/Leinart comparisons are fairly accurate. Both came from winning programs that captured championships rather carried in a way by supporting casts. Griese had a seriously shredded arm that was mystifyingly rewarded with a rather big contract for that time.

Leinart, at least for now, might have a little better intermediate accuracy(if you compare them as rookies), a little bit better arm strength, and a little bit more mobility, but all of these things IMO are not really not as important as whether or not Leinart cracks under the pressure of a big game. Griese basically wrote his own epitaph when he declared the Oakland game a "make or break" game, when it was his heroic play with a busted shoulder that enamoured Shanahan to give him a much overly inflated deal. This is a well traveled road, and he looks good. I didn't see him play yesterday. He might be more like a Brees if Brees comes back from his shoulder. I don't see Leinart sitting at the end of the bench in a loss tho. I don't think he's going to set himself up like Griese did.

I didn't know crap about Cutler, I knew much more about the other two for obvious media reasons. Jay flew under the radar despite being MVP in the SEC conference where not a single other player was even invited to the combine from Vandy. Also, players like Rocket Man and Vernon Davis kicked holy butt in the Senior Bowl practices. Neither were too proud to pass on the combine either, because neither had anything to hide in a pro day orchestra.

Everyone knows how bad I wanted to catch VD last spring. Ha! We will have to settle for Scheff and the QBOTF in Cutler. I was completely taken by surprise with the Cutler pick but like it.

That said, Jake came out last night and basicall said "I'm all in" and threw the cards down. He's not going down without a fight. This is another characteristic that is diametrically opposed to SOB. Plummer is a duck in a rainstorm...it just rolls off his back. Griese didn't have that quality for whatever reason.

I cannot help but root for Leinart. My wife went to school with him and he is a really nice guy. That being said I think he has a long ways to go. Granted he only had a couple of practices but it is still football and it was the little things. His balls tend to float, he had one interception get called back. He looked flustered with the rush and he made some common rookie mistakes. He showed some mobility which will help but I am now very pleased that we got Cutler who is obviously the best of the 3.

I think Kosar is a good comparison. From having met Matt and talking to his friends, he really is very smart and will do well.

PS
My wife went to a Rams game with Matt and his family when they were in middle school. I say this because on TV they were saying that Matt had never been to an NFL game. This is BS.
