Cutler's preseason stats thus far.

22/34, 291 yards, 2 TD's, 0 INT's

Not bad for a rook.

Mike Bell! another great run! This guy is awsome! by the way, this is the second time I have seen this game. it's just that good.

Agreed. I'm watching for the second time as well.

The Broncos were very successful last year and it looks like they may have actually improved in some areas. This is just fun.

I still think one of the best parts of watching this game so far has been the NFL Network ad where it shows the two guys talking at the water cooler...

"Take Away Ladianlian and the chargers are nothing!"

Other worker points behind first worker, and you see Philip Rivers, Keenan Mccardell, Merriman, and Lorenzo Neal.

I was hoping for some Javon Walker action though...

ClevelandBronco

Cutler really stares down his targets.

Yeah. You can tell that he's used to having the luxury of being able to get the ball to the guy he chooses to target. That won't work long term in this league. Fortunately, it's a teachable skill and he has time to learn.

I wonder if Lelie is going to rot on the inactive list all year. At this point it seems like no one wants to offer anything worth his value.

The Broncos aren't giving him a new contract. He's not going anywhere else. I hope he has some mon-ay in his savings account. ROFL!

Back from the game - the first preseason game I've gone to in years. Some impressions:

Cutler wasn't as good as last week, but I was impressed with his arm strength on several throws over the middle. I was hoping Shanahan would let Cutler throw a bomb at least once, but with the big lead against his good friend Jeff Fisher Shanny played it close to the vest.

Plummer played a solid game - showing good mobility, good play fakes, and accurate throws. I'd like to see Plummer try to get Walker involved in the offense in next week's preseason game (where the #1 offense should play a half or 3 quarters). Once near the goal line tonight he threw a completion to Smith where Walker was wide open on the play. Walker didn't have a catch tonight.

Kircus made a nice 4th down catch on the sideline when the game was still close. I think Kircus keeps the #3 receiver spot.

Mike Bell looked much better than last week. I liked how he lowered his shoulder and drove into the endzone for one of his td's. Didn't like as much him leaving his feet too soon at the goal line earlier in the game, but overall Bell had a solid game.

Loved the power running of Damian Nash! Could Ron Dayne be the surprise cut this year? Who needs Dayne if there are younger, cheaper backs like Nash who can get the tough yards. The Broncos need a replacement for Mike Anderson in the short yardage situations, and Nash looked like the best power runner tonight to me. I'd like to see Nash get more playing time earlier in the game in the next two preseason games to see how he does against the other team's #1 defense.

Scheffler overall had an excellent game (except for one drop on a tight end screen pass). Scheffler played ALOT - both with the #1 offense and when Cutler was in the game. In addition to his receptions he didn't look out of place blocking tonight. Scheffler reminds me of Patriot and 49'er great Russ Francis.

Jury is still out on Elvis Dumervil. I focused in on him on a few plays where he was easily handled by a bigger Titan offensive lineman on the pass rush. Elvis did have a near sack of Vince Young later in the game.

Is this the Paul Ernster we drafted? After his anemic kickoffs last year before he was hurt, I was impressed tonight with Ernster's kickoffs into the endzone tonight.

I heard on the postgame show on KOA Radio that Al Wilson and Champ Bailey didn't play tonight because they missed curfew at the team hotel last night. Shanahan wanted to send a message to the rest of the team, according to KOA's Les Shapiro, that even vets who miss curfew will get disciplined.

Week 10?

He's required under the CBA to report by week 10 to get credit for a year of service on his contract. Which, in this case, is the final year of his contract. If he doesn't report by week 10, he'll be under contract to the Broncos for another year after this one.

Week 10????
I thought that a player has to report before the 11th week in order for this year to count towards his contract? That means as soon as week 10 is done Lelei will report so that he can be a free agent. Maybe I am wrong thought maybe its the 11th game which is week 12 for us.???

Looks like Clockwork Orange confirms what I thought. Its part of the CBA, that is what Portis was threatening to do before the trade.

In the pregame show on CBS4, Bowlen was asked about Lelie, and he made it clear that Lelie was in "the rear view mirror" and "we are moving on" and that they are pulling the team together. It is clear that Bowlen has decided that Lelie is gone. I don't think he would over rule Shanahan, but I think the book on Lelie is officially closed. I don't believe we need any more threads on him because he is an ex-Bronco.

One comment is that Cutler did not throw much to a WR. Stange how that worked out, but then that could have been what Heimerdinger ordered - or Shanahan. The whole offensive game was shut down from the middle of the third on, and they were practicing the running game. I think Shanhan was avoiding embarrassing his buddy Fisher. Besides it was only an exhibition game.....

all in all, a good game for the Broncos, and one that I certainly enjoyed watching because of all the "break outs" by the stable of RBs. Bobby Turner has done it again, I think. One of those guys is gonna be a big time runner for the Broncos. I don't really know which one.

the announcers are annoying, but I enjoy seeing Reggie Rivers after so many years. I used to converse with him years back when he was a player through his message board. 8')

I wonder if Lelie is going to rot on the inactive list all year. At this point it seems like no one wants to offer anything worth his value.

Don't confuse price with value. No team has offered Denver's price for Lelie. That price has little to do with his value to the Broncos. His value to the Broncos is virtually nonexistent, except for his trade value.

In other words, he's of little value on the team, but he could be of great value off the team.

Meanwhile, Lelie values himself highly, and that's his great mistake, IMHO.

And as long as he's in a position to pay himself the price at which he values himself, then God bless him. Let him pay himself to play football in his back yard.

On the other hand, if he's looking for a payday in Denver or elsewhere, he's valued himself too highly for his current employer as well as his potential employers.

His performance on the field hasn't convinced anyone except Ashlie himself yet.

They really ought to teach this stuff in College Football Turned into a Career 101.

That's not necessarily true. If not traded he could report before the season even starts.

But if he does, what to do with him? We already have a crowd at WR. Without him We have Rod, J Walk, Marshall, Kircus, Watts, and Devoe/Terrell. With him, who do you cut? It would be hard to cut Devoe or Terrell because of special teams. Kircus will be important in the return came. marshall is not cgoing anywhere. So would you cut Watts for a WR core of:

Rod
J Walk
Ashley
Marshall
Kircus
Devoe/Terrel

I think it would have to be Watts because neither Ashley or Watts play special teams.

At any rate, I think Denver is in a poor position here. If he comes back after week 10 do you really want this guy around and lose a real contributor. It makes me think that Denver is going to be forced to trade this guy for a 4th rounder after the regular season starts.

watermock
08-20-2006, 03:58 AM
I was with my visiting son so I missed the game. I don't really care if we aren't calling plays for Walker to be the primary reciever. I still don't want him taking hits till next week at the earliest. Getting some run blocking and pattern running is fine with me. Reports are he's looked great but still isn't 100% but close. Get him some snaps but not so that knee swells up or gets sore. He might of pushed it.

I went thru the stats and this thread and things look pretty damn good despite this cakewalk preseason. Detroit and Tennesee? I know we lost to the kittens, but I could of cared less. It's practice man...practice.

Cutler again found both Scheff especially, and DEVO made his usual one big play. Where the hell did this Nash kid come from? Missouri is all I know. I'm starting to believe we can put anyone back there too! I always poo poo'ed that but sheesh.

I saw just a bit of Cutler's highlights. This kid had two throws that were incredible. Still no interceptions. Sounds like Jake will be dragged off kicking and screaming. Ha! I'm also super excited for Scheff. Sounds like Dumervil still is getting overpowered. He might make it as a situational player IMO. Maybe they will decide to feed him veal(not his fellow DT) 5 times a day to get him to be a plugger at DT but I heard he got pushed around pretty easy. Dunno if that was at DT or DE...doesn't matter alot but some.

I know Dayne is falling off the radar but he hasn't looked that great even before he hurt his toe. I think he's gone on the final cut. I also think Webster will finally make Burnsie find other pastures. He started last night after Rhino and Champ missed curfew. Rookies never learn I guess. Ha! They probably did it on purpose to excuse themselves and laughed, but it's not a good idea to piss off the Mastermind. Who knows, behind closed doors Shanny might of told them to be late just to send a message to the team that noone is exempt...I find it kinda suspicious two team captains would be late. I honestly have my suspicions because Mike loves mind games. What better way to make a point when he didn't want to play either in the first place? That wasn't IHOP and MoC coming in late. CONSPIRACY THEORY HERE. Ha.

I didn't know the score till late but it sounds like we shredded them and there was some good effort. This team has some serious talent coming of age but still is a few players short, but expect another fun season. Plummer seems to be playing like he's in a contract year. He doesn't have an oooh! ball, but he had a great, clean game. We played a poor team at home but at least we won at night in bad weather for once.

Pretty good theory but you know Wilson and Bailey would hate to be held up to this kind of redicule from the team and the press. I imagine they were two pissed of dudes especially when they consider themselves team leaders.

I dunno. It just makes too much sense. If Rod Smith agreed I would of known it would of been a setup because Rod would never of agreed. I don't put anything past Shanahan. Who knows, they might be laughing like monkeys on LSD on a semi-prank. I'm not saying that happened before I get thrown under the bus, but it would be pretty funny. You understand the motivation I think...If team leaders get benched that easy, I better keep my own nose clean. It's humorous to think of tho. Most likely they were up on some nookie and lost the time.

I meant I would of known Rod DID miss curfew because he wouldn't of ever agreed to such a nefarious scheme. In all likelyhood I imagine that both were out together and lost track of time or were having too much fun not to push the envelope...that's HIGHLY likely. Makes a cool theory tho. There are, however 3 factors to support my conspiracy theory.

1. I don't think Wilson, who has a slight injury was going to play, and why in the hell even let champ on the field?

2, Setting an example that noone is "above the law" for the youngster. The two Defensive captains? Hmmm. That's really the only reason I have pause to wonder.

3. Shanahan is incredibly facinated with mind games and is very mischevious in his own way. He loves to play mind games with the media.

It's humorous to consider it, but I would give it maybe a 10% probablilty at best. The NFL would go ape **** if they found out about a prank like that.

I liked the play from Rod Smith where he slipped just before the end zone but still reached for the goal line to try for the TD. When the ref called him down on the play, Rod was jawing with the ref saying he was in before he was touched. Gotta love the competitive heart this guy has even in pre-season.

I only got to catch the first half, but I really liked Mike Bell's play. When he broke that 30 yarder I thought for a second that he had a 3 instead of a 2 on his jersey. The cuts he made at the line and the way he played the pitch outs, I started getting flashbacks. Don't want to put a jinx on the guy but I like his running style. Great speed yet enough power to break the tackles.

Kinda worried about the D. Seemed that the Titans were getting some easy ones between the LBs and our secondary. Perhaps we are going vanilla for pre-season and then the blitzes become more frequent once the season starts.

All in all, great game and no injuries.

Even if Lelie comes in Watts is on this team. And I think Khan reported that he was on ST this year in Training Camp/practice. The spot is between Devoe/Kircus/Terrell.

Right now i think this is how the receiving core is going to look like.

Rod
Javon
Kircus

Watts
Marshall

If he comes back, I say we just sit him out. We have a lot of talant and depth at that position, and I think someone will step up at that third slot and realy be a good contributer. I think Denver is in a good position. well, not for a trade, but for replaceing him. I think in the long run, one of these guys, marshall, kircus, or watts, will be more consistant, a better contributer, than Lelie ever was. yeah, Lelie had hte best ypc, but that's all he had. I want wr's that are more than a one trick pony. I think we have some now with watt, marshall, and kircus. When we trade him, I know shannhan will get the best deal possible. right now that might be a fourth round pick. If that's the best deal possible, so be it. I would be happy with that.

A few thoughts...

1. Nice to see that Rod still has it. One of these days he's going to have to hang 'em up, but he looks like he has another great season in the tank.

2. Now I can see why Mike Bell won (at least temporarily) the starter spot. Not nearly as fast as Tatum, but more grit. Reads the holes well and clearly understands the scheme. Nash also looked good.

3. Nice recovery by Sheffler after he got off to a rocky start. He already looks like a better receiving weapon than Putz. And there's just something about his attitude and field awareness that says we have something special here. I'm not ready to proclaim him the next Sharpe/Gonzales/Gates but some good times are ahead, and I'm no longer depressed about the TE spot.

4. Cutler is amazingly composed for a rookie. Excellent pocket skills, good mobility, strong accurate arm plus touch. He'll be battling for the starter spot next year.

5. It's nice to see the House back on the field, but he's not quite back in the groove yet.

6. Shades of Eddie Mac! Kircus might be for real. He'll be at least the #4 WR, and if he keeps working, I wouldn't be shocked to see him at #3.

7. The starting O-Line looks as good as ever. It's a lot harder to evaluate the backups on a TV screen.

8. Except for the one bone-headed move down on the goal line, Jake looked very, very good. And even then, I wasn't too upset about it. If you're going to do that stuff, do it in preseason and get it out of your system.

9. Harder to get a read on the defense right now. But they do have a lot of speed, and that's never a bad thing.

I'm still very concerned about Denver ability to run the ball in short yardage situations. We need to be able to pick up first in 3rd and short yardage, since we won't be going for it regular season on 4th downs

Players that stood out to me:

Offense:

Plummer - look like his usual mobile self and made some nice throws, he's ready for the season

Cutler - continues to impress, nice razor sharp slant pass to Scheffler between defenders

Mike Bell - hangs on to the #1 spot, great running between tackles and running through tacklers too, took on a LB at the goal line to get in too, does have some TD in him

T. Bell - I thought he ran hard too and took on defenders

Nash - body-wise- looks a lot like Dayne with maybe more speed, really runs hard and takes on defenders.

Cobbs - also ran hard, making it tough to decide who to cut here

Kircus - amazing he has not made a roster by now, seems to be quick with good hands, willing to play special teams, nice addition

The o-line looked solid throught

Defense:

Need to still improve against the run and the screen pass

Veal - was all over the place, a couple sacks and making tackles against the run, impressive

Lang - was like Veal, all over the place making plays, he will be a great addition to the line

DJ Williams - he was very active tonight

Ferguson - got a pick and coming up and making good hits

Cox - almost got a pick, but always through himself around out there

Paymah - I thouught his coverage was pretty good

Special Teams:

Ernster should get the job over Knoor, deep kickoffs all game and his only punt went for great distance

Clark - with a nice kick return, though maybe still headed to the PS

Terrell - didnn't do much, but did return a punt for decent gain

Green - seems to be there on special teams a lot

Brandon - also making plays on special teams

Overall:

Hard to find much to criticize after this game. There will be some tough cuts to make at RB, WR, DL, and LB. I really like the overall depth on this team. Could say too much depth and not enough spots for everyone, but that's what Shanahan wants.

Too bad the team hasn't seen a good D yet, and won't with Houston next week. The last game the starters won't even play probably. BVP will probably play most of the game, his showcase game for teams that might want to sign him.

S ofar this preseason , i like what I see , pressure from the front 4 without blitzing , M.Bell doing the Salute , Cutler making some damn good reads , Plummer looks better then last year , and our Secondary has realy stepped up ......Nick Fregerson is on fire ....... on his interception last night , ;D that looked like a 4-3 eagle except there is no such thing .......

I'm tempted to keep up the "ruining the fun" thing - but the team looks good enough to win the Div again, so that's an automatic playoff berth, and that's all you can ask for at this point.

The salute I was surprised to see, but it fits because its MB doing it. MB looked good. When he burst through that hole on the long run to the right side, I thought it was TB. Nice acceleration.

I am amazed how Plummer's performance is sort of glossed over. He had a QB rating of over 157!!! That is an incredible rating. Four years ago, the members of this august body would have died to see a QB who could put up those numbers.

Jabber about "exhibition game", but he was just impressive as all get out. I am as excited for the QBOTF as anyone, but I am not about to sacrifice the play of Plummer to bask in the glow of the glowing remarks by the glowed hereon. No siree! I am gonna wear the shades fro Plummer. That man played ball last night, and I hope people here start to give him a bit more credit than he seems to be geting right now.

Does Jake ever set his feet?? He could be a hellofa player if he'd learn to set his feet. Maybe his reaction to the defense doesn't allow for the time to set his feet?

That was a nice pass to Kircus and he barely positioned his feet. That is, got both on the ground shoulder width apart.

How about Foster?? Does that guy ever lock up a defender? His play scares the heck out of me. The Titans starting right tackle didn't let a single man through and kept them out of the play. Ebenezer was a non-factor last night...Dumervil too.

Speed once again is shown to be ineffective when on slippery surfaces. Are the Broncos ever going to learn this?!?!

Volek looked worse than I've ever seen him. The coming of VY must be in his head. Recall how many Broncos fans wanted Volek??

Clark beats out Terrell. He seems a fearless returner who's under more control than Kircus. For a mo there, I thought Kircus had a death wish.

If he reports I gurantee Shanny will immediately place him on the inactive list. So a roster spot won't be wasted.

A classic line from Randy Cross, I believe it was - "Some returners can find two guys to run into". He said that about a Denver Bronco, I won't say who. Denver needs some return guys real bad. Unfortunately, Brian Clark appears to be the best at KO, but doesn't appear to be a contributor elsewhere. Terrell maybe the same.

No you STFU, I can't stand the guy as an announcer he drives me nuts. I don't care whether he played here or not, I am not going to bow down and call him the almighty. But I don't want to ruffle any feathers so I am sorry if I stuck a nerve.

But seriously he played here 3 years and was a joke, thats like saying we should bow down to Olandis Gary. I would bitch about TD if he was the announcer for the game and he was bad at it. You can seperate the two professions.

Tenn couldn't stop the running game and Shanny didn't want to run up the score. Rod got some action, but the stars of the game was o-line and running backs
