DENVER BRONCOS HEAD COACH MIKE SHANAHAN

On how P/K Paul Ernster will be used in Saturday’s game against Tennessee
“The same thing (as last week at Detroit). We talked about the first three games, so it’s the same game plan we talked about last week.”

On how long the starters will play
“Twenty plays. Next week, we’ll go probably the first drive into the third quarter. The last preseason game, most of the starters—or at least the established starters—won’t play. It’s pretty consistent with what we’ve done in the past. After the starters are out, after 20 plays or so, then obviously the second and third units will get the rest of the game.”

On practicing the day before a game
“We usually don’t practice today, but (we decided to practice) with all the players we’ve got and the number of people that are playing. Usually the day before the game, we just have meetings. So this is a little bit unusual, but I thought it was good considering the organization you have to have with 88 guys dressing.”

On trading WR Charlie Adams to the Dallas Cowboys
“You’ve got to evaluate the depth at the position. Charlie’s been a big part of this organization. I just like the way he’s handled himself, but we just thought it was in our best interest to make the trade.”

On preseason games as “make or break” situations for players on the bubble
“The next three games are. There are a lot of guys that you’re looking at. Not only at their backup positions, but how they play on special teams. Do they play full speed? Can they make a difference on special teams? We’ve got a lot of positions where we’re not sure about that second and third guy. How do they play on offense or defense at their position, and can one guy play special teams and the other guy can’t? All those things kind of go into the evaluation process.”

On WR Javon Walker
“Javon has had a very good camp. I’m sure he’s excited to finally get back into playing shape. He hasn’t played, obviously, for quite some time. (He’s) in a new system. I’m sure he’s looking forward to it.”
